Rag, tag and bobtail, the Stoke City Matchday Thread 07:16 - Dec 5 with 26764 viewsnix

Yeah, cos it's tradition, I'm continuing the matchday thread, but with no small measure of trepidation, despite my natural happy clappiness.

I'd feel a bit more confident without our increasing injury list. We're a plastic icebag on Charlie's knee from having to potentially recall a 19 year old from Torquay to join the match day squad as reserve striker. We're going through wingbacks at a careless rate.

And yet this squad (who are so lovely and are so brilliantly the right sort their wives are getting together to raise money for sick children plus our Tiger Cubs, (please donate here and support them if you can https://trustdraw.qpr.co.uk/))just deserve a bit more luck and to continue where they started the weekend fixtures in third. I'm going for a 2-1 win to the Rs, with Willock 🔥 and Chair sharing the spoils.

Credit where credit is due… George Thomas has put in a shift these few minutes

Thomas has been a magnet for the ball since he came on, he guides a header wide from a corner

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Not sure why we brought Gray on so late - when you are 1-0 at home there isn’t much to lose - he can’t score last min worldies every match

he's come on, put the effort in and found space.
Lets support him.
One of those days, too many injuries and too small a squad.

Five minutes? Would have expected at least six due to their timewasting.

hes one of those players who desperately needs something to go right for him, and i think he can come good ... similar to dykes last year, he just needs a scruffy goal or an assist to get him going .... think he can be useful (thought hes admittedly been useless in 1.5 seasons)

Unfortunately he underlines the lack of depth in the squad. That being said, he's not in any shape or form culpable today. Poor tactics and selection from the manager given the injury list, and a striker bang off form this season.

Their keeper has been Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks reincarnated.

Assuming nothing insane happens in the last 2 minutes, we’ve been beaten by a better team today. We’ve given possession away for fun, been second to 50/50 challenges, outmatched all over the pitch. It’s been a bit worrying: even with the injuries, Johansen and Austin have consistently been miles below last season’s standard, and we’ve looked sluggish as team. At the same time, this stuff’s going to happen: we’re still a work in progress, we’ve not played terribly, and their keeper’s played superbly. Being in the playoff picture halfway through the season is a decent achievement, we just need to put this one behind us and kick on.

FT REPORT
No question about it - this was a huge disappointment.
Despite so much possession we created only two clear chances.
That was a full-blooded hit by Charlie - saved by the keeper and sub Thomas at the end of the match - when all had been lost anyway.
Charlie's second half penalty miss really ended any real chance of a comeback.
But let's credit Stoke.
They're defence is one of the best in the league and their two cracking goals in either half were devastatingly impressive.
Without any proper wing-backs (apart from Ozzy) - no injured Adomah, Wallace, Odubajo, McCallum - it does leave the question why didn't Warbs play a flat back four on this occasion.
It looks like Stoke boss Michael O'Neill outfoxed Warbs - soak up the pressure and hit on the breakaway. And that's what happened.
Stoke remember also had big injury problems too.
But let's take an overall view.
21 games played and we are fifth - in the play-off position don't forget.
I suppose our hopes were teasingly raised that just maybe an automatic promotion spot was on following a run of 4 wins and 2 draws in our recent 6 matches.
But not to be it seems
Yes disappointing but 5th place at the start of December - I'll settle for that.

Ah well, one of those days. Stoke's defence was too good for our team today. Think Adomah and Wallace missing was a big problem.
