Worst Away Section In The Premier League on 23:00 - Feb 24 by dirk_doone
If other teams had our ground, the Itchen North is where they'd stick the away fans because it is one of the worst locations in the ground for having any influence on the game. If you put the same number of vocal fans directly behind the goal at the Chapel end, they'd have far more influence on players and officials and it would give us a home advantage.
There is a reason why, in football grounds all over the world, the noisiest and most fanatical fans, who really want to do everything tbey can to help their team win, locate themselves directly behind the goal, where they know they will have the most effect. Can you imagine fans of the most successful teams, like Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund etc having their most vocal fans hidden away in the corners of the away end??? Of course not: they'd say that's totally stupid. We are one of the few sets of fans in the world who have to moan about 50/50 refereeing decisions going against us at home and that's totally self-inflicted.

Don't Celtic's famous Green Brigade all sit/stand in the corner at Celtic Park? I understand the atmosphere up there's not too shabby.

But, Celtic have noisy fans behind the goal at both ends while away fans just get a small section in a corner.
I would be perfectly happy if St Mary's were like this:
We would need a complete new fanbase for St Mary's to be like that.
Serious question for those who want the Northam a home end. Where are the extra 3000 noisy Saints fans coming from to fill the whole end?
The Itchen North in reality is small maybe 400 bods so that's not going to fill it. Currently when Block 43 is open to Saints fans it is usually filled with the type of supporter who wants to sit down and watch the game.
So are there 1000's in the Chapel, Itchen and Kingsland currently chomping at the bit for a chance to stand in a Northam Kop?

Yep, it's interesting that we rarely take many fans to Everton. We have sold out early 3000 at Norwich, we took 6000 to Spurs and always sell out the London games. Everton away is always not well attended for some reason.
Because its not Liverpool. Most of our support would rather go across the park.

Dirk, you have put it perfectly. Why on earth so many are happy to stand in corners is beyond me. Its OUR ground. Every club has its own end,we have the corners. And before people say we are all over the ground,we all know where the most vocal fans are, they are located in part of the Northam and in the corner of the Itchen. Congregate them together and as you say they would have more influence on a game. One can only hope one day we will see the light.
You would need the current lot in the Northam to pipe up for that to happen
As another poster has said the Northam have been found out this season and need to go back to doing their job.

well if you ignore the fact that Real have their ultras in the second and third tiers at the bernabeu (and more towards a corner), then ignore places like the Chicken Run at Upton Park (which was down the side) or the positioning of the main home support at the New Den, or various split stands behind goals, that were definitely main home ends, in the days of terracing (The Dell with the Archers being one), oh and of course Nick's favourite's of Liverpool who have the Kop, but then a totally different culture in the Anny Road end.
I think the thing many people seem to miss is that the reason the Itchen North exists is because a lot of the folk in there don't want to be in the Northam (one other thing why has the Northam suddenly become referred to as a corner, when it hasn't been every other season St Mary's has been open as it's an end behind a goal).
The truth is we have a "Kop" at the Chapel, it's just that the people in it don't sing. Then we have the Kingsland North and Northam, which combined could be plenty loud enough to drown out away fans, and in the past did just that.
The problem is more simple, the Northam no longer do their job. perhaps the Kingsland North and Itchen North should bring back the old Dell classic to inspire them.
Northam, Do your job Northam Northam Do your job.

What happens when we get a large away following?Guess where we end up....

What, once every couple of seasons when we draw a big club at home in one of the cups? That's what you're using to back up your argument?

But that only happens a handful of times a season, cup games, block 42 is directly behind the goal so you can't call that a corner.
Lets be honest the issue isn't that Saints fans are in the corner, it's that the Northam is dead. The Kingsland north and itchen north carry the ground now.
We can all take guesses as why that is, more tourists wanting "atmosphere" so buying in the Northam, more women and families, older fans not moving their season tickets to open up seats for the younger lads that make the noise, heavy handed stewards etc.
Whatever it is the truth remains, the Northam is dead, and has been for seasons, the only way that's going to change is if the folk there take responsibility and pride and make it what it was again.
You can argue all you like about combining groups but if most of the people in one group don't sing it's not going to change f*ck all.
The Northam are entitled they don't think they deserve to be called out, the irony is they used to do the same themselves, singing "Chapel give us a song", maybe it's time for them to wake up to the fact that they're becoming the Chapel.

The Northam is as you say is dead probably because the singers moved the Itchen. So the Itchen and the Kingsland carry the ground now,i would call that the corners. Someone mentioned where would all the singers come from if we combined into one end? Well its in my experience singers get the rest at it,that's why the Northam has lost some of its atmosphere. Away fans should not move Home fans from their end however many times it happens. That usually happens when its a big game, just when you most need all the support you can get.
