Sunderland ‘till I die. 19:16 - Dec 27 with 12390 views | Snipper | Just started watching this on Netflix. The first episode they’re talking about getting back to the Premier League at the first attempt. They got thrashed by Celtic in a friendly at home a week before the season. Their fans were already turning on them. Just about to watch the second episode of 8. Great viewing.
Sunderland ‘till I die. on 10:36 - Dec 29 with 3535 views | HammersmithR | My mate’s brother was the producer on this series. He’s a Gooner. He had to move up to Sunderland for the season to film this. They had access all areas. Many clubs were approached by Netflix to do the series. Only Sunderland were keen as they wanted the show to end with them returning back to the Prem. He works for Fulwell productions who did the series. Thought it was much better than the Citeh one as you get an insight into the whole club including the fans.

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 11:59 - Dec 28 by BklynRanger | The one glaring criticism of it I've got is lack of access to dressing room tactics, conversation etc - Coleman is possibly a bit more open but Grayson obviously didn't want any part of it. What football needs is a modern day Sitton moment goddamnit! |
Grayson - looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights after the Celtic defeat, and strutting around like Pep Guardiola after they beat Norwich. Have to say, my feeling is that you could swap Grayson for the huge majority of British managers/coaches and not notice much difference. Largely clueless beyond getting bodies back in defence and stopping other teams playing, no idea how to coach offensively. Think what this programme showed is what minefield owning and running a football club is. Sensibly, you should ignore the clamour for success and run the club purely for financial stability and growth. The medium to long term consequences of a Jack Rodwell type - a single bad signing - are simply too damaging. And a reminder that a real challenge awaits us should we end up achieving promotion at the end of this season.

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 13:18 - Dec 28 by Northernr | Yeh the meeting with the scouts was incredible. The whole scouting department seemed to be operating completely independently, with no idea of what the budget was for either transfer fees or potential wages, nor really what the manager was after, so they just sort of guessed and then when push came to shove they just went out and tried to sign Ross McCormick instead. Marc Wilson laid on the bed wincing as they moved his leg up and down, saying not very convincingly that his knee only hurt when he had to kick the ball. Signed him anyway. Johnny Williams, physio standing there reporting back to the CEO, reeling off page after page after page of injuries including an exploded groin muscle (who knew it could do that) and they signed him anyway as well. I'm sure QPR has been like this in the recent past but, like I say, so grateful to Hoos and Ferdinand for how the place functions now. About to sit down to episode three. |
Only seen three so far, but... Clive, you’ll probably know who the Scunthorpe lad was. Meticulously scouted as a future value-generating asset, except they failed to record if he wore gloves when it wasn’t that cold. He’s probably tearing it up in the Bundesliga. Bain is the quintessential bllshitter who’s talked himself way out of his depth and is waiting for the jewelled axe to fall. After all that talk about making a difference every day, he told the story about the player who wasn’t pleased to be back and who he knew should be gone. But, it’s not that simple... To be fair though, rejecting Ross McCormack was spot on. Grade A moody parasite.
Sunderland ‘till I die. on 23:37 - Dec 29 with 3354 views | MrSheen | Gone square eyed watching the rest of it. Really gripped by it, but wished it had more depth. It was fascinating to hear McGeady complain about the lack of rage from Coleman, though both he and Symonds made it clear that they thought it was their job to make the players feel as good about themselves as possible. It obviously worked for poor unhappy Jonny Williams. I don’t think it that he’s clueless, he was clear about what he wanted from specific game situations in training. Maybe that affirmation-based approach isn’t right for a nasty physical game where only one team wins, or that you need a broader palette to motivate a whole squad. You’ll never know what was left out and why (confidentiality, lack of interest from the producers), but I was really surprised we didn’t ever see them either reviewing their past performance or talking about the next team. Apart from one scene with Grayson and his tatty flipchart, we never saw them sitting together indoors.
Sunderland ‘till I die. on 02:11 - Dec 30 with 3317 views | qprjeff1882 | I watched all of them in a row last night. One thing that struck me was there didn't seem to be any working relationship between Bain and the rest of the football staff. Yes they always said that Grayson and Coleman always spoke to Bain but there was no relationship with anyone else. So many didn't seem like they knew what they were doing. Jack Rodwell came across as a mercenary like we had. Not even making himself available to play and clearly couldn't give a monkeys. Lewis Grabban too seemed like someone you wouldn't want in the trenches with you. Couldn't wait to get out of the club come January and also showed he clearly couldn't give a monkeys. Would hate us to ever sign him. And would urge our owners to watch this series. I felt really sorry for the normal people employed by the club and its clear to see how it affected everyone. I actually found myself wanting Sunderland to win abd stay up even though i knew it wasn't going to happen. At times it was easy to see the club was baldy run from top to bottom and this had obviously been going on for a number of years as their form for the last 3 to 4 years shows. Also shows how hard it is to bring in players when you're not doing well. Even for a big club like Sunderland. I would love ALL football clubs to collectively come together and refuse to pay players these vast sums of money as it's completely spoiling the game. No one seems to want to do it for the love of the game anymore. After watching that I'm actually glad they're turning it around this season. Might not get back up straight away but seens they're back on the right path. Oh and there is plenty of ugly f uckers up there lol. [Post edited 30 Dec 2018 2:14]

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 05:16 - Dec 30 with 3293 views | PunteR | Sadly it's not an isolated story. As we know. I bet clubs up and down the country are like that. Football has eaten itself. Money has ruined the game. I did wonder how much money was going back into the community up there.? Where's the investment in the kids up there? The area in that part of the world is football mad and used to produce top players. Gazza, Shearer, Waddle, Sinton springs to mind. The players in the program just seem detached from the area. Maybe that's part of the problem. Players just picking up their checks.

They have a first class Community Trust, Foundation of Light, who have just opened the most modern community facility in the country called the Beacon of Light which cost £19m https://www.foundationoflight.co.uk/beacon-of-light/ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beacon_of_Light I went up to see it being built about three years ago when I was interested in the story that Sunderland, like Everton & Derby, were opening a school. Even then you could see it was going to be some venue and will surely be an inspirational environment for local youngsters. [Post edited 30 Dec 2018 8:51]

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 11:01 - Dec 30 with 3198 views | MrSheen | I’ve been reading about Margaret Byrne, Bain’s predecessor. Among the highlights of her rule were covering up for Adam Johnson, signing up Rodwell without an automatic relegation clause - actually, his wages would drop to £40 grand a week should he fail to achieve promotion at the first attempt, so he’s missed the chance to be the highest paid player ever in League One - and then getting a £700,000 payoff when they finally had enough of her. You’ll be stunned to hear she’s now an agent. Among her clients: Lee Cattermole, only fair as she gave him the contract that runs to 2021, and George Honeyman. Apparently, he wants to leave as he’s too good for League One.

It appeared they were watching Duane Holmes at Scunny from the way it was edited. Tore it up for Huddersfield Youth in a final at Loftus Road a few years ago and got signed from Scunny by Derby over the summer but hasn't played much for them.

Of course not. Football and all it’s ills is the only thing that sells. Watching Rodwell be a mercenary is far more interesting that knowing what the club do for some of the most at need. What our very own Trust do under the guidance of Andy Evans is remarkable but as fans we only want to know what happens on the pitch and the boardroom. Understandably so, however it’s just a sad indictment of our media and society.

I actually remember being at a POTY dinner early in the Briatore era out at one of the Heathrow hotels where Andy Evans got up to do a speech on the work of the trust over the previous year and some drunk moron at a table near the stage heckled it as 'boring' and 'what about the actual team on the field'. It's the only time I've ever seen Andy cross!
Sunderland ‘till I die. on 09:22 - Dec 31 with 2846 views | londonscottish | Started watching it last night and got through the first four back to back. As Clive and others have said thank f888 we've had Les & Hoos in place over the last few years. (& Ramsey, Penrice, etc etc etc). That bit in the second one (I think) when the CEO waved his transfer notebook about saying it was "full of scribbles" made me shudder. Can't wait to watch the next 4.

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 19:20 - Dec 31 with 2634 views | Tonto | Just finished watching them. Got the feeling that there was an apathy amongst the players and the rot had just set in. Shows how lucky we have been not to fall through the same trap door post droopy chops. I got the opinion Bain meant well, but had his hands tied by an appalling owner who didn't give a sh.. Coleman came across as a nice bloke, but probably best cut out for international management where it's more motivation and tactics than day to day man management where different players need different approaches. Some need shouting at, others need an arm around them.

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 15:56 - Dec 28 by Northernr | Piled through a few eps this afternoon. It is annoying me how they intersperse clips of the manager on the touchline that don't fit with the match that's being played. For instance they do a huge bit on them blowing a 3-1 lead at Brentford, but the clips of Grayson going through it on the touchline is clearly filmed at Hull. A little thing, but a thing that will grate on football supporters, and shouldn't really be happening given the budgets Netflix provide filmmakers. I am enjoying it though. Jack Rodwell eh? What a chap. |
I’m on ep 4, and noticed the same thing. They also cut to a shot of Steele looking disappointed after conceding a goal at Ipswich, but Steele is clearly at LR. Bit naughty, although by all accounts the edit for this was a little tortuous, as you’d expect. Looking forward to the rest. My mate was the DOP on it so I should mention how beautifully it’s filmed. Highlights for me so far as others have said was the transfer day stuff, Bain being a smug bustard, and lee cattermole talking about winning the league before going completely the other way within 5 games when he realises even then that they could go down. Incredible. When you look at the clubs that have dropped further, it’s amazing we.ve trod water these last few years.

They started the season with Vaughan and Grabban and ended it up with Fletcher up top. All along they could’ve had Asoro and Maja playing who seen like good sorts. Thoroughly enjoyed the documentary. As for Rodwell, an easy scapegoat. What wage do we think Bain was on driving round in his custom Range Rover with his sparkling watch collection?

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 22:28 - Jan 1 with 2327 views | Kiwi76 | Just completed & felt for the fans watching a 9mth decent to relegation. They'd survived previous few years spending up large in Jan window & always likely to bite them eventually. Great stadium & set up - 46,000 watching them in league 1. Ended up almost feeling sorry for Bain & couldn't help liking Colman - msg to dinner lady etc. Good show but didn't get close to issues with that squad - was interesting how fragile they can be though - Williams especially. Gibson & Rodwell a little less...

Bain was on £1.25m a year which is really high fo a CEO with his background, experience and track record. Rodwell was on £70k per week in the Championship so made about £3.5m pre-tax. He had a 40% reduction when they got relegated to a measly £42k per week although Sunderland cancelled his contract pretty soon after pre-season commenced. Following cases such as Pompey, Leeds and our goodselvea, it truly does beggar belief that this could happen again and makes me wonder if everything is as it seems.

Absolutely agree on the transfer thing. Everybody, every manager, every fan, constantly talking about "needing a few more bodies in". Not sure if it's the transfer windows and deadline days, 24 hour media, Sky Sports hamming it up causing it or what. The Observer did a run down of 20 Premier League fans on Sunday and what they thought their team needed to do in January. Only one of them (Brighton) said we're alright actually, don't need anything. Everybody else, including Liverpool, felt signings would be necessary. Three quarters of them felt their team was "desperate" for a new striker. Chelsea are currently fending off bids of £25m for Callum Hudson-Odoi, who's barely played, and is 18 years old. Sarri says he can't pick him because he's under pressure to win games. Chelsea are also trying to spend £60m on Pulisic, who is 20 years old. Signing a kid is somehow less of a risk than playing the one you have.

If your top of the toppest league and you still think you need more players you've got to question the sanity of football. Spending/laundering. There is something very wrong in football. [Post edited 2 Jan 2019 10:03]

Sunderland ‘till I die. on 10:33 - Jan 2 with 2160 views | terryb | I can't say i felt too much empathy for them. In pre-season you had the same message from the managememnt, players & fans - "We're too good for the Championship." "We will be back next season in The Premier, where we belong." "We have players like Cattermole, Rodwell etc. They are good Premier players, never mind The Championship." None of them had a clue what awaited them due to a naivety which I found incredible. As to Bain. Words fail me! How can you not tell your employees (scouts) what type of player they should be watching due to budget constrictions? I also couldn't believe how many staff they employed, especially as they had made 85 redundant after relegation the previous season. A full time Fans Liaison Officer. I doubt that position still exists! Coleman did go greatly up in my estimation though, for the text he sent to the catering staff etc. In fact, the staff seemed to be lovely people. There were just to many of them!
