What Is Your Favourite Game At St Mary's Ever !
Wednesday, 8th Oct 2014 09:37

With little Saints stuff to discuss over the two week International break, lets get a bit Interactive and share our favourite ever games at St Mary's

Its surprising to realise that this is the 14th season at St Mary's since leaving the Dell in 2001, during that time we have so far played six seasons in the Premier League, five in the Championship and two in League One, thankfully this season meaning that by the end of it St Mary's will have been a Premier league ground for half of its life and will hopefully go on to increase that percentage.

In that time we have played in my reckoning including the 3 games at home so far 117 Premier League games, 115 Championship games & 46 League One fixtures, you can then add to that Cup games in four competitions, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup & Johnstones Paint Trophy.

Im not going to try and add up these cup games, but in addition to the 275 League games so far I would hazard a guess that the Stadium has hosted well over 300 competitive games plus a host of testimonials, friendlies & even a full International or two that probably pushes up the total figure to nearer 350 a figure that will be beaten by the time the season ends.

So what is everyone's favourite game or games for that matter ?

Standouts could include the 1-0 win over Charlton in November 2001 that finally saw our first Premier League win at the stadium, or perhaps a game from the Cup run of 2003 that saw Spurs slaughtered and then an emotional win at home to Wolves in the Quarter finals and the realisation we were in an FA Cup semi final.

Or it could be something from later in the Stadiums life, the win over Sheffield United on the final day that kept us up in the Championship in 2008 or other final day celebrations as we were promoted from firstly League One and then the Championship.

Or perhaps its a host of other great victories over the years, anyway lets hear from everyone about their favourite moments at the Stadium, post your comments down below so we can have a great record of some happy times.

The first match that I saw was at the Dell over 50 years ago: Saints 9-3 Wolves. The 6-3 over Man U will take some beating.

I wasn't there for it but surely has to be the 4-0 Coventry game to get us promoted back to the prem. I also remember a cracking 3-2 win against arsenal in 02/03 I think.

maybe not favourite game but certainly one full of emotion and tension, the 4-3 win over Norwich in April 2005. desperate times and we simply had to win. To the horror of St Mary's Norwich took the lead only for the boys to hit back quickly. we then scored, matched by them. again we scored and again they equalised. minutes to go and the tension was unbearable. then Henri Camara scores in the 87th minute and St Mary's exploded. I've rarely known scenes like it. we thought we'd won the game, we did and were safe, we weren't. the rest is History. there's ,only one Marcus Liebherr.

The win against Coventry to gain promotion was a clear one to mention given the importance of the fixture but i wouldnt say it was enjoyable until the 4th goal went in.

In more recent times I thought the win against Man City in our first season back in the Prem was hugely enjoyable and exciting with a great result from the team against the then champions.

There have been better games, but the game back in April 2011 when we went 0-2 down to MK Dons and then came back to win 3-2 always sticks in my mind. Both MK Dons and Saints were chasing the automatic promotion spots, so it was a real six pointer. And it was the first time in a long time that Saints had gone behind and then gone on to win.

Finally, I think that was the game where my son ditched Chelsea and became a 100% Saints supporter. The atmosphere was just electric in that second half.

Of the ones I've been to, that Sheffield United game in 2008 stands out. It had everything.

24.10.93 Sainst 2-1 Newcastle - two of Matty's best, a win, Branfoot's poor management shown up for what it was, evening game, floodlights, saw meself on telly with the missus after (nearly a full second of glory), unbelievable atmosphere.

Worst game ever 20.03.96 Saints 0 Sheff Weds 1. Drizzle, freezing cold, 90 mins of the dullest football in history, a scuffed winner after only 1 minute Marc Degryse, so we were losing the whole game.

Sorry those are both at the Dell. Beating Pompey 2-1 in the 2005 cup is one of my few St Marys games, and the happiest so far :o)

The Pompey defeat was gratifying but I saw us play Middlesborough and Birmingham in quick succession in 2011/2 in the championship. We won 3 0 and 4 0.
In one David Connolly finished off an x numbered passing move and in the other Richard Chaplpw should have finished off a 25 plus move , but didn't. At the time both teams were playing well. In the two games we smashed the opposition and witnessed the passing football that's become our trade mark in recent seasons. For that, Nigel and Alan should be recognised for starting the journey we are currently on.

For me it has to be the 4-0 vs Spurs in the cup. Playing against Hoddle brought out the best in our players and this was the best I have seen us play at St. Mary's. Yes the tension and then celebration of the Sheff Utd game (little did we know...) was also memorable. We had the celebration in the Coventry game but even an old pessimist like me knew we were going to win that one - so far less tension.

From a personal viewpoint it was the 2-0 win over Stockport on 30-01-2010 because my daughter was mascot that day. She met and has photos with Jose Fonte, Morgan Schneiderlin and Kelvin Davis - along with Rickie Lambert and several other ex-Saints.

But for a match that lives long in the memory, I'll pick the Premier League game v Bobby Robson's Newcastle on 12 May 2004. The Mags needed a win to qualify for the Champions League, Sky's cameras were covering the match and for sheer entertainment value it was hard to beat. Only the final twist (Newcastle's added time equaliser) spoiled an otherwise perfect plot. But what a match. At both The Dell and St Mary's there's something extra special about evening floodlit matches.

Living overseas, I have only managed a few games a year at SMS, so my choices are pretty limited, but as much as I loved The Dell, being there on the opening day of the 1st season at SMS v Chelsea was a very special day for me. Everything looked so impressive, we had finally arrived in The Big Time, doubling the capacity of The Dell, superb views no matter where you sat and quite an atmosphere as well - admittedly I was in Block 1 (?), right next to The Chelsea Fans, no netting or no man's land!!
Football wise I guess last season's annihilation of Newcastle and the promise of things to come with such an exciting young squad of home grown kids, experienced pros who had been with us since the start of the amazing journey up the leagues and plaudits from all over coming our way, was a truly magic day.

The best game of football was not our finest hour but it was food for thought and a bit of humour into the game was our 4-1 loss to the blue few. it was a hell of a game we should and could have been 2-0 up at half time and then so many things could have been different. but that was when i started to believe more that we had turned the corner. i do not thank them for much but i do thank them for that day. we are a stronger united fan base from dropping down though the leagues and i will all ways remember that day for all of Southampton said in one voice WE ARE STILL BETTER THAN YOU.
