One of the enduring questions of our time but... what exactly is it that Vanessa Feltz does?

Talk $hit and play CDs. A bit like my 16 year old daughter.

I think Jason Mohammed's a pretty decent presenter and at £350k a year he's far better value than Gary.

The details released yesterday were nothing short of a cover up as many of the earnings for those listed are far greater. It is known within BBC circles that Graham Norton gets £2million a year and not the £610,000 listed. Most of his money comes through BBC Studios and the figure quoted just relates to his radio 2 show. His chat show whacks his earnings up.

On top of what the BBC pay these egotists they also moonlight by hosting corporate events, opening some establishments, doing after dinner speeches etc. Then there are the outdoor location programmes where you wonder who pays for it.

To take an example Fiona Bruce is shown as earning £260k but this excludes her £200k for Antiques Roadshow so the true figure is £460k. When she got the QT gig her wage increased when you could argue it should remain the same because her news appearances have drastically reduced as a result. When she does QT there is an evening dinner for all those who take part and this means staying the night in whatever town or city it is held if miles away from London ditto the same for the Roadshow. For all her earnings and Oxford education it came as a surprise to the townsfolk of Halifax last week when she declared Halifax to be a city on QT. £460k for duff gen...

It is the same with all outdoors presenters like Countryfile or any live TV events where overnight stays are required. It should be that the presenters pay their way from their big salary but I suspect it isn't but maybe someone knows the answer.

Morally it looks wrong to be paying these sort of wages and asking over 75's to stump up or face being criminalised for non payment of the fees should they choose to protest.

I read that Norton actually receives £5 million a year from the production company. These salaries are of course obscene (Vanessa Feltz for instance, £7k per week?) and the people who receive them have minimal "talent" (they could all be replaced by people who could do what they do just as well on a lot less money). In many cases all they need to do is read an autocue. Would anybody stop watching MOTD if Lineker didn't present it? Of course not. And if other companies such as Sky are paying similar amounts - or more - then that is also a disgrace but at least they are commercial organisations not funded by a licence fee. These people are all on the gravy train but in a world where footballers are making £200k plus per week it is hardly surprising.

If they ended up with Dan Walker smugly laughing at himself them yes he'd be a big loss.
If they want to compete with other channels they have to pay the going rate for the best presenters, programmes etc and Lineker is one of the best around

Why do they need to compete. Football is TV rights driven. They very rarely show the same program simultaneously, so is there really a competition?

The BBC is not reliant on viewing figures for advertising revenue (thank goodness) so it is a public service organisation funded initially by grants. Yes it has a commercial arm selling programs it makes but does anyone buy MOTD?

I was under the impression his chat show was paid through a private production firm and that is why his true figures are undisclosed.

I take your point about Sky and don't dispute it but this thread is about the BBC and they have increased staff costs and increased on air pay while saying they can't fund TV licences. Some of the presenters go abroad and make programmes and as they have to eat and stay in accommodation who is paying for that? Is it the programme makers or us?

I have said before that I have been held responsible for the financial crash by the government and my wage has increased by £1,000.00 since 2010 which is just about a £100 a year as there is a cap on my earnings. Meanwhile Mr Shearer's wage for appearing once or twice a week on MoTD increased by £30,000 in one year. I graft and get sweet FA and Shearer uses his tongue to make a few comments over game highlights and makes a fortune. That can't be right but still it is not enough for them as they have many side lines in hosting events to top off their huge salaries. I don't think anyone wants to hear my anecdotes...

His chat show is made by So Television which was the production company he set up and used to own but he sold it to ITV seven years ago for £17m.

I know I have a very simplistic view but whatever we think of the Prime Minister she does work hard behind the scenes and is up half the night wrangling over the Brexit mess that has been foisted on us. If she only gets £175k for that then I don't believe any BBC celebrity should be earning more than that for having it easy in a studio with the aid of an autocue.

As I said about Shearer, all he has to do is appear on tv for an hour, tell us what the latest is at Newcastle, make a few comments on the game just shown and that appears to be his work for the week. Oh and here is £394k a year for doing that. We are mugs for accepting this whilst we work all hours to earn a fraction of that.

It isn't just the salaries but also the cost in making some of their programmes. I have no idea what is required for Antiques Roadshow for example, to use the lavish settings at stately homes etc but do the owners let them on their land for nothing or is there a charge? The filming takes two days so all the experts have to be accommodated overnight as well so who pays for all this? I really have no idea how all of this is funded in austere times.

mmmmm I fall in love with her a little bit more every day. Indeed, worth every penny for being a likeable and highly accomplished journalist/broadcaster.

Agree re PM comparison and Shearer but Antiques Roadshow attracts a big audience and is surely a great advert for the stately homes that host the events?

Generally the public are allowed to wander around the grounds but not privileged enough to be let inside a stately home to look around. Only the presenter, experts and film crews get licence to roam the property.

I would expect some sort of payment to be made to allow thousands to wander the grounds and for TV crews to film around the place. I would be staggered if it was free for the BBC to make use of.

Do you enjoy paying 500 pound energy bills during record profits for oil companies?

The BBC are the "impartial" arm of British and European imperialism media. I don't like them in the slightest but the majority going mad at BBC salaries is silly and consistent with us being a brainwashed population as it is exactly what the ruling class of Britain wants us to be mad at.

We are the most propagandised people in the history of mankind. We can openly commit genocide and not a word is uttered on this forum But when the red top papers scream a headline we all repeat and are disgusted.

.and yes I'm pissed off because we just threw away a lead against Wednesday with five minutes left and managed to lose.

Graham Nortons chat show is not made by the BBC, it is made by ITV studios so his salary for that is in the same bracket as people in Doctor Who and Eastenders etc so not included in this.

If BBC are morally wrong for this is it morally wrong for Sky to charge you and over 75's a monthly fee to pay big money for talent and also run adverts as well to increase their income

BBC payment a legal requirement. SKY payment by choice. There is a difference

Be more interested to know how much of our money they've spent on this phoney war on disinformation. More than 60 so-called journalists working on it. Achieved absolutely nothing in the past year.

Or how much they've spent on Elon Musk hit pieces since their tech correspondent got invited to a 1-2-1 interview, and walked out after his gotchas kept falling flat, so Musk started answering audience questions instead. Completely embarrassed the BBC and the UK imo.

Shambles of an organisation. Like so many other things these days, it's sad to see. The clock is ticking.

Costs about 50 p per day . A bargain despite some of the shite like masterchef which seems to be on every day of the week. Apart from that, cracking value.
With you on Vanessa feltz mind. Pointless woman.

Isn’t the decision to remove the free over 75s licence fee a government decision? Not sure how that’s the BBC’s fault.

Cut the licence fee anyway and take it out of general taxation. While we’re at it, do the same for national insurance.

There was 3 BBC interviews in a short space of time, Musk, Tate (Who I thoroughly dislike, for clarity) and the Belarusian tennis player, where the behaviour of the interviewers, the lack of preparation and professionalism, was embarrassing.

The standard of journalism worldwide (but especially in the UK) has collapsed due to social media, 24 hour news channels, acceptance of political interference, and the restrictions of opportunities for working class talent.

This is an old article, but terrifying:

I assume you are a similar age to me.

I think if we were taught critical thinking at school instead of being expected to memorise Shakespeare or the accession dates of Kings and Queens then we’d be equipped to handle information better and separate bullshit from non bullshit.

It’s impossible for anyone normal who has to work full time, have kids, or a life generally to get a fair view of the world I reckon.
