This British Steel pension malarky on 13:04 - Jun 4 with 3430 views | DaiWill | This whole situation makes my blood boil. TATA were put up for sale to force the government into offering them incentives i.e change in law to re-calculate the pension to benefit themselves (not employees), access to government loans, reduction in business rates, energy costs etc etc if u read between the lines its been a bluff all along. Good people have left as a result, risking their pensions being frozen all so TATA can benefit from past failures. As soon as interest rates rise you will see a significant improvement in the pension performance & the deficit will soon diminsh. It wasnt that long ago that it was voted the best performing pension in the UK so it cant be doing that bad!!!

Was told yesterday that the shortfall is around 450 million, but their pension investment portfolio is worth 14 billion. the shortfall is based on the assumption that all Steel Workers will survive until they are in their 80's.

Life expectancy is going up; that means there will always be pension shortfalls as people live longer.

Funny that, private pensions were affec ted long before public ones were. Didn't hear the doctors, nurses, fire, police etc complaining on others behalf. Nobody is laughing at reductions in public sector pensions anymore than people laughed at reductions in private sector pensions.

This British Steel pension malarky on 15:59 - Jun 4 with 3213 views | Dyfnant | If it was simply about life expectancy, why not simply reduce private pensions by 25% or so when people hit the mystical 80 years of age. The government are probably hoping this £14B of assets are windfalled to them and future governments can be lumped with chipping away at future payments. Tata's parent company certainly shouldn't be able to dodge this 'deficit' by shifting the UK business, they took payment holidays quite recently when the funding level was positive.
