Ay Ay Ay Moussa ! A Song For Djenepo !
Tuesday, 17th Sep 2019 09:42

It is about time that the Northam End had a few new songs to sing, how about this one from the 1980's.

Standing in amongst the tremendous away support at Sheffield United it struck me that these days we have very few new songs aside from the usual generic songs sung by every club.

Some clubs seem to have the knack of coming up with songs that define a game or season, usually it's Liverpool or Man Utd who come up with an adaption of a song and make it their own and it is about time we followed their lead and came up with a few classics our selves, preferably ones that aren overtly concerned with our local rivals from down the M27.

The goal by Moussa Djenepo brought a tune into my head that I had not heard for years, Ay Ay Ay Moosey by Modern Romance circa 1981 a big hit at the time.

I though this would make a great song for Moussa Djenepo and it's been stuck in my head ever since,

It has everything a good football song should have, simple lyrics and a chorus that can be adapted easily and is easy to sing.

Perhaps my version needs a little work, but it shows how easy this song is to adapt and give us a original song for a new hero.

Now when I see those stripes
And Saints they start to play
My heart is in Southampton
Down St Mary's Way

Ay ay ay ay Moussa
Ay ay ay ay Moussa
Ay ay ay ay Moussa
Scoring every day

But we shouldn't stop here, we need to find more new songs and build atmosphere in St Mary's, some will slag off the Crystal Palace ultra's but they have ramped up the atmosphere at Selhurst Park over the last decade or so and we need to do the same at St Mary's.

Perhaps this song isn't the greatest but it is still better than songs about Pompey fan's on strings.

Anyway who has any other ideas about songs that could be easily adapted to with Saints or our players and can ramp up a bit of atmosphere, post your ideas below and then let's try to send them viral and lead for once instead of following the rest.

Nick I appreciate that it's not normal practice to allow comments other than those relevant to the topic under consideration. However, as a one off may I be allowed to draw attention to to the report in the Sun newspaper today relative to Ben Stokes and also his response to it on the B B C website?

If ever anybody outside of Liverpool and their "Don't buy the Sun campaign" needs a reason to stop buying something which proports to be a newspaper then in my opinion the Sun's report today is reason enough.

No Problem Mark I am not a fan of the sun newspaper for what it dd to the Hillsborough families and indeed the lies it spread back in 1989 and onwards, it has never changed

DONT BUY THE SUN

Me and my mates tried, in the 80's, to get a new song going based on King - Alone without you. Goes na na, na na na, na na, na na, na na na... Ooh (change it to Mou)
As you can imagine everyone looked at us like we were nutjobs. Didn't have the Heart to try it again.

Thanks for highlighting this subject, we certainly don’t lack passion for our team, but definitely lack imagination compared to other clubs when it comes to singing songs.
I think this could work quite well, rewording the chorus of Spandau Ballet’s ‘Gold’;

“DJE-NE-PO,
PO,
ALWAYS SCORING GOOD GO-ALS
HE’S GOT SOME POWER YOU KNOW,
HE’S JUST UN-STOP-PABLE,
ALWAYS BE-LIEVE INNN,
DJE-NE-PO,
PO”

(Repeat)

Brings to mind the "mighty Kenyan" song when Victor Wanyama was in his prime. I can't remember if that was a spontaneous adaption or nicked from Celtic fans. Anyone recall the first time it was sung at St Mary's because it certainly captured a rapid following from supporters. I certainly agree Nick that it's time to improve the song list but it seems as though it's really hard to find the elusive combination of tune and words together.
