"Tasked with reshaping an imbalanced squad when he took over the reins, Beech has shipped out several ineffective loan signings and replaced them with recognised players with proven calibre."

Did I really read that in an MEN publication?

Impartial reporting out of the window for a paragraph there... not wrong though.

Anyways, I'm all for Beech staying in place, as we have a crucial, if not season-defining, run of games coming up and we need stability more than anything else right now.

Stevenage, Tranmere, Wycombe and bury is a string of games where we can make a big difference to our league position and that of our relegation rivals'.

All the games will be tough (especially Stevenage and the buckets) but we can take points here.

If Beech gets a decent points return by the end of the month, I think the job'll be his longer term.

True. It is befitting of a more upmarket broadsheet than the hackneyed NCTJ-taught prose usually found in MEN titles.

Actually I thought that the journo had correctly asserted what an incompetent tvvat Beech has had to follow, only less eloquently than what I could of.

It's only since Eyre's departure that they changed that, as evidenced by their latest story.

It's amazing what a paper will do to ensure they still get their regular interviews with the manager.

Makes for quite ridiculous reading at times.

Aza should've written the match reports, absolving Mr Partington from any blame and subsequent ire from Mr Eyre and Mr Bunn.

Alternatively, Mr Partington should've grown a pair and reported what he saw.

Why is this even an issue now? If they have let Beech sign people, and found him the cash to bring in the likes of Ormerod he's staying until the season is done.

I think the issue came about to achieve the following:-
Keep Beech on his toes
Plant a seed in Flickers mind. Maybe, one day, if things panned out that way, he would be welcomed as our manager
Finally, to quieten the juvenile fans that believe that someone should be removed from his job after his first setback.

I wish CB good luck over the next few games, I am impressed with what he has done so far, despite Dale not getting a win.

I'm gonna say now, you're going to get Beech's first win against us.

Why? Because I can't stand Beech, we have a proven track record of trying to kickstart other people's seasons (lost twice to Stockport last season, already tried to kickstart yours once this season) and logic tells that your front pairing is going to teach someone some manners at this level at some point shortly - it's pretty useful.

I think we'll get back to back wins , get safety and build onit Chris Beech developed Youth Team into Champions last season bringing a Football League Youth Cup to our cabinate. To do the double over B**y will make this the best season i've seen since Wembley & Promotion season, Even staying up at Plymouth Argyle Away last season

Right. I've got to be honest, I don't want to be hugely cynical but this is how I see it.

Since Beech has come in, the following has happened.

The keeper has come in and looks pretty solid. Fair play.

Bogdanavic has signed and had a terrific game against Preston. Again, Fair play, he went out and signed a target man which we'd been crying out for all season. He was largely ineffective vs. Hartlepool - maybe he just had a very good game and isn't the god-given-gift we all presumed he might have been. He has to prove himself against Stevenage IMO.

Bergkamp, Benali, Barnes-Homer and Balkestein have left the club. By this time, almost all of them would have left the club anyway, and it didn't take a genius to figure out none of these players were good enough in the first place.

Ormerod has signed. He's a player with a decent track record at a good level. He's also getting on a bit now, and was one of the poorest players in one of our poorest performances in years at Hartlepool. He was played out of position and like the rest of our attack-minded players, looked out of sorts.

Results-wise, we have earned a half-decent draw at Walsall. A point that was to be used to build on and was not too disappointing on his first outing as manager. I can't comment on performance as I missed that game due to work.

Preston - we played well. But we also played well against Preston a couple of months earlier - a game which we won. Preston are one of the poorest sides I've seen in League One, and we couldn't beat them at home. We might have deserved to - but we didn't.

Hartlepool - I don't even wanna think about it again. Absolutely shocking. No creativity, determination, will to win. Nothing. Was as bad as anything I personally saw under Steve Eyre.

Squad selection is questionable too IMO. Beech was desperate to start Ormerod Ball and Bogdanavic on Saturday, so ended up playing Ormerod out wide left. It's not his position! If we wanna play 4-4-2 sign a winger, not a 30-odd year old with little pace. Ball has been poor also in his second spell IMO. Grimes should be getting his chance from the off to impress now. From what I've seen of the two Grimes is as good a player and is one of our own, so should be getting the opportunity. Where do we go if it all clicks into gear but by the end of January our three forwards have packed their bags? Was so harsh on JLAA to be left on the bench too.

So looking at it like that, in my opinion, Beech still has a lot to prove. If we are so confident giving him the job now I ask you this - Has any caretaker manager ever been given a job without winning a game? Got to win against Stevenage otherwise I'll be asking Mr.Dunphy to bring someone in who can actually sign some players in time, (that will be our own), and a bit of experience and guile to turn this around.

Not to say I won't be supporting Beechy whilst he's in charge, I just think a few of you are being a bit quick to praise him when in reality he hasn't done all that much.

Valid points. Against Walsall we saw some small improvements. Against Preston we were very good but a poor side often fails to get much luck. At that point the improvements (and signings) loooked very good. Obviously the Hartlepool game didn't go well but it is what happens after a defeat that shapes your season and shows a team's character.

For me, the board are handling things correctly. We were told that it was Beech's to lose. So far he hasn't performed badly enough to warrant not getting the job and hasn't performed well enough to warrant keeping the job. A very big few games coming up that will shape the career of CB. My personal opinion is that he could well be a very good manager for us, but I'm not completely sure yet. I think the board could well be of the same opinion.

On the question of whether a caretaker has ever been given the job without winning a game - yes, Barrow lost all 4 as a caretaker and we still gave him the job.

And that worked out well.

Admittedly, his successor did very well as a caretaker and was worse than Barrow when given the job permanently so it's a bit swings and roundabouts.

Aza did a 2 week secondmant at the MEN (and at 442 mag) and on both occasions had articles published (the 442 rarely publish interns work). Sadly it all comes down to Lady Luck, I'm afraid. I had to move to fookin' Scotland to get a shot at sports journalism - so flexibility is key too.

It also helps to be qualified.

Quick question Fitzo, what qualifications do you have?

I'm studying Sports Journalism at Uni and already have a part-time job as an analyst for Socanalysis, but some people tell me that there are better ways to get into it?

Just interested in what you did and what you feel is the best route?

I did a degree in journalism and then got the NCTJ Certificate, which is a necessity for getting into local press. I then got my NCE Certificate.

I don't have a sports specific qualification (there wasn't one when I was training about 12 years ago, although I believe there is one now).

After doing work at local papers and news agencies, I was lucky enough to be offered a job as deputy sports editor on a regional daily paper in Scotland after a trial. My qualifications told them I was a competent journalist, but they obviously wanted to test my sporting knowledge out, hence the trial.

I then put the graft in and was nominated for Sports News Writer of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards in 2007. This gave me a door into the nationals and I ended up doing loads of stuff for them.

I was offered full time work with no contract - so declined. Ironically, my full-time job now has nothing to do with sport, although I still do the odd game for the nationals now and again.
