Of course you can, you don’t have to give a divorce, it can be refused (and often is). But it’s mostly always best that if one party wants one that you honour their wishes and move on with your life.
Same here, Cooper wanted out. We wanted him to sign a new contact. Eventually there comes a time where there is literally zero use in making him continue his duties leading a club when everyone knows he doesn’t want to be there.
But framing that as if we pro actively wanted him out and it just so happened he wanted out too, is false. It appears we wanted him to stay and eventually agreed to his requests to be broken from his contract.
Negligible means irrelevant, so an irrelevant sum of money gained is not better than an irrelevant amount of money lost - if the upshot of that means the coming season which could potentially culminate in £120m is thrown into disarray.
If we knew what we knew now then I’m sure we would have bought ourselves more time and agreed sooner. However hindsight is 20:20 and it appears we still believed there was a chance he would sign a contact otherwise we wouldnt have attempted to open negotiations as reported this morning. I said you can’t enforce a spouse to honour a marriage. Yes a divorce won’t always be granted, but there are no legal or financial sanctions on someone who just decides they don’t want to be married and walks away. There would be for Cooper if he just didn’t show up for work.
But this is why I don’t like these loaded analogies on simple topics, what was a decent discussion has descended into a debate about marriages.
Proactively wanting him out? I don’t know. It would certainly be mental based on results. Most of today’s reports seem to indicate a breakdown in relations between him and Winter/the owners. Quite plausible they could want him out if a working relationship becomes untenable.
It’s been alleged he’s on £3k per week. Assuming he’s the highest paid, im not sure how accurate that is, bearing in mind we have one of the England GK coaches working for us. Assuming it is, I doubt it’s a negligible amount to get rid of Cooper, Marsh, Margetson and his other staff.

Cooper had plenty of attacking options. He chose not to use them.

The analogy is quite simple, they both show that you can end a contract with out pro actively wanting it to happen. Marriage, business partnerships, employment - the principle is all the same.
Yes you can go into tiny details and make every situation slightly different, but the overarching principle is taking a financial hit to break a contact doesn’t mean you actively wanted that contract to be broken, but realising in the situation that the other person wants out so badly, it may be for the best.
But you know that, I’m sure. You just like framing in the negative for some reason when it comes to Cooper like constantly saying “touting himself out” even though I’m sure you know the meaning of the word and how it isn’t at all the reality.
All of the rest comes back to the fact that it appears we were attempting to offer him a new contact. This suggests we wanted him to stay. Fulham was reported to have wanted him as number 1 target but didn’t want to pay the significant compensation.

Wouldn’t say they played a blinder as such, it doesn’t appear to have been their choice really. But it would be a decent outcome, if not an extremely high risk one to not accept reality weeks ago.
Not how I would like us to conduct our business.
I very much doubt Howe will fancy coming to a club with almost nothing to spend, a squad decimated by loans going back and the best player leaving who apparently has a strict managerial salary budget too.
Those named mentioned early by the bookies are completely generic. I would imagine it’s going to be someone completely untried at this level who is happy to take a small salary in a role they are just happy to be there, as they won’t be getting much backing.
Toshack is probably the main candidate and I know Rangel was also earmarked by HJ as a future manager, not sure if he’s done his badges but wouldn’t be shocked to see him in the mix if so. That’s the caliber of manager we will be in the market for and don’t see anything but a year of relative struggle. That’s my honest assessment. | |

The new man has to surpass Cooper's upward trajectory. Why else make the change.
It makes no sense to replace a highly successful manager, who pound for pound outperformed all-comers (the fella was only on 3k per week).
2 playoffs in succession. With The lowest paid manager. With a mid table budget. Without a proper out n out striker. Without a dynamic AM. A massive achievement.
Let's see who's been lined up by Winter who beats that performance.

Can easily see why Cooper thought he could do better elsewhere - 3/4 first team players from last season already gone with maybe 1/2 more to follow & only limited funds available to recruit & replace. Unfortunately for him, at least so far, no one else has seen him as the right man. Going back to the England U21 role would be a backward step but otherwise he might need to wait 3/4 months for a role to become available.
From the clubs side we were clearly not willing to roll out the red carpet, champagne & significantly up his wages & I suspect hoped for a tidy compensation payment once he started looking around - not to be & we’ll see how advanced Winter’s succession planning is in the next few days.
Whoever the lucky guy/gal is to get the job will need to get to know the squad, work with Scott in the bargain basement store & probably accept losing at least 1 first teamer (Grimes or Cabango I suspect) all within a couple of weeks so anywhere around mid-table would be a decent return.

Yes it’s a simple analogy, it was also unnecessary as we both, along with everyone reading, understood the points.
I’ve been more complimentary than most towards Cooper. I’ve stated many times recently that despite my misgivings over his playing style, his results override that for me and I’d rather he stay, which is not the common consensus on here.
After stating this separation was likely down to him making things awkward after not getting the Palace or Fulham jobs, do you honestly think he wasn’t touting himself out? He’s arrived at a situation where he’s leaving his job without another lined up.
Fulham quite categorically stated that Silva was always their number one target. They may be lying, but they did say that.
How do you know they didn’t make it known they’d let him go for next to nothing. They’d tell his agent, they’d tell interested clubs. They wouldn’t put out a press release. | | | |
