Slipped / herniated discs 16:04 - Sep 23 with 5490 views | jamois | Anyone ever had one? What was the recovery like etc? I'm pretty much bed/sofa bound having it done it only a week ago. Left leg still numb and don't have muscle control of it either. I was returning to Costa Rica from hols in UK, was only an hour from home. Now stuck here with not the best medical care/experts locally. At the risk of making me even more farked off than I already am, thought I'd scout around for experiences that might give me a better idea of what I'm in for.

Slipped / herniated discs on 16:25 - Sep 23 with 5472 views | johann28 | Bad luck, mate. Recovery time is generally around 4-6 weeks depending on how serious it is. Some physio obviously highly recommended if you've access to it. Good luck!
Slipped / herniated discs on 16:50 - Sep 23 with 5441 views | ibnumber10 | I had a herniated disc through playing football, saw an osteopath who said sorted me out after 6 weeks of treatment, and got back to playing again said it was L5/ L6 spinal segment where the damage was. Still get the odd sciatic nerve pain, but it's more down to posture and maintaining strength in the back muscles now, also another physio recommended 'decompressing my spine' which was basically doing chin ups or just hanging from a chin up bar for a while

Thanks for the advice lads. 4-6 weeks i can handle. 4-6 months and i'll be asking Harry to order a nuclear strike on my beach peninsula. I'd heard about the chin up bar thing. I have one - sounds like a plan.

Slipped / herniated discs on 19:17 - Sep 23 with 5324 views | Gloucs_R | Snapped my L4/L5 disc early last year. Part of it went into my sciatic nerve and I now have permanent foot drop caused by the damage it did. It almost severed the nerve. Lifted my little boy up at the wrong angle Over a week it got worse GP over the phone - keep exercising, try leg lifts Exactly one week later, crunch, disc snaps in half whilst doing leg raises at home 999 call - "sorry we dont come out for back ache" - 10/10 pain, never felt anything like it, screamed and pleaded with them (via my wife) to pick me up and take me to hospital GP refused to come out, left drugs for me at reception Drugged up to my eye balls for 4 days 4 days to get to see a GP 10 mins with GP - sent to A&E At A&E a specialist consultant was waiting for me 1 hour later - XRay 3 hours later - MRI 12 Hours later - Discectomy, the largest section of disc the consultant had ever removed without removing it all 24 hours later - no pain and walking on crutches 8 weeks later - driving, using a foot brace 18 months later - still no movement in parts of my foot. And the moral of the story is......dont ignore back pains, listen to your body and if you have to get private treatment then do so. Just keep hounding your GP and get an MRI scan one way or another if the pain continues. Even if you have to pay for it. First time I have ever publically said the above, have been hiding that for ages but one of the reasons I dont get to many games these days,.

Jesus wept. That's an absolute horror story Gloucs. Feck me. And what stunning incompetence from the GP too. What is the point of GPs, I'll never know. I have a taste of what you had, without the full disc snap (I hope) and I don't think I can comprehend what that pain must have been like for you. I have foot drop too, but to get it for that long?!?!?! My heart goes out to you mate. Glad you got it off your chest, that has to be good. I hope you've got some kind of positive prognosis, a plan that you're working towards? Best of bloody luck to you.

Cheers. In most cases the foot drop goes, I was just unlucky. Let me know if you want any advice

Hope you feel better soon , must be crap being laid up . Besides I need to know I am rowing with someone lucid , not crazed with alternating pain and hard drugs ..Regards

Haha thanks Harry old son, much appreciated. I live in a surf town, used to being active, so it'll be a test for me to keep sane. Then there's the drugs.....I promise to save all my lucid stuff for you mate, no misunderstandings or flying off the deep end. That might mean there's not much of it at all though...

Slipped / herniated discs on 22:45 - Sep 23 with 5177 views | hovehoop | Try reading the other thread from the above link. There's some useful stuff there and you'll get an idea of degrees of back problems. I agree with Glous R's advice who clearly has had a dreadful time. I'm 21 weeks into a prolapsed disc between l4 and l5. Have had the MRI scan and so far foregone the offer of surgery to cut out the prolapse. You can get really good foot braces for support. My right foot lost lateral stability and I kept falling over apparently for no reason. The brace can instil some confidence and assist walking. My physio is forcing the issue that I try swimming which I can do ok though the sciatica pain in my glute has got really painful again. I feel every case is different and as Gloucs said no one should ignore back pain as most likely it's a sign of deterioration before a major failure like a prolapse. When you get over the injury think about Pilates or yoga to protect the spine in future. Good luck.
Slipped / herniated discs on 23:01 - Sep 23 with 5161 views | AndyB | Had two discectomy's. Same disc - left side of it and right a year later. Put up with first for years hoping it would go. Sciatic pain down one leg. Any walking i had to stop every ten mins and crouch down for a bit. Had the op (second i had as soon as i felt similar pain on other side) Felt great since the day out of hospital. Off work for 4 weeks but absolutely no pain since. Not even laid up on sofa during that time. Hardest part was stopping yourself from overdoing things cos you forget you are still healing. Play footy, run with no problems at all. If you can have an op - do it. Dont feck around with physio. If its herniated for a few months - chances are it aint going back by itself. [Post edited 23 Sep 2014 23:02]

4 days of hell but since the operation everything has been good. Agree with what has been said...stretching or yoga type exercise is vital. I'm now that weird guy at service stations doing stretches after a long car journey. I can sort of run, kick a ball and do most things to some extent. Weighing up having tendon transfer next.....a whole efferent story. [Post edited 24 Sep 2014 7:23]
