Roberts goes to Wigan, but is Baker exit next?

The resettlement of Pompey's League Two-winning midfield continued today with Gary Robert signing for Wigan - but it remains to be seen whether Carl Baker will be the next of 2016=17's stars to depart.

Roberts left Fratton by mutual consent earlier in August after Kenny Jackett made it clear the Liverpudlian would not be in his first team plans.

It will have come as no surprise to Pompey fans that Roberts has once again teamed up with Paul Cook, a manager who has shown great faith in him throughout his career.

Cook told the Wigan official website: ‘Gary is a player I trust and who has proven himself at this level. ‘He will make a significant contribution and I’m delighted to have him on board.’

The future of Baker remains less clear. Coventry are keen to sign him but a deal could depend on whether Baker can agree a pay-off from Pompey. He would be the third of last season's midfield to leave if he goes, with Michael Doyle having joined Coventry soon after the end of the campaign.

Blues chief executive Mark Catlin told The News: ‘There has been some interest in a couple of our players, however I am not commenting on individuals.

‘We are in ongoing discussions with a number of clubs regarding a few of our players, but there is nothing concrete there and things can change very quickly. There is some interest but, as I have always said, whenever you are working on deals like this it has to be a good deal for the various parties.'
