Breaking news: Pompey set to play game of football

In an unexpected twist to the season, Pompey are due to play a game of Championship football this weekend.

This last happened three weeks ago against Preston and now after a blank fortnight and two aborted attempts to resume their fixture list, a trip to Swansea looks like it might yield a match - unless flooding, locusts or an earthquake loom up in Wales between now and 3pm Saturday.

And Pompey's lack of action - more extended than others at the bottom of the table - means they go to the Liberty Stadium back in 24th place - although with two games in hand over most of the teams above them.

Boss John Mousinho is itching to send his troops back into battle after last weekend's trip to Blackburn and the midweek meeting with Millwall were called off because of troubles with floodling and then floodlights.

He told the club media: 'It was a unique night and off the back of Saturday, it was particularly frustrating that the match had to be postponed. Everyone did as much as possible to get the game on and I could see everything that was going on – involving the safety officers, the police and the referee.

'Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons – Andy Cullen came out and spoke about them on the night – it couldn’t go ahead. I know a lot of people have been inconvenienced and we were all gutted when the decision was made. But the safety of the fans was the most important thing and we have to take all that into consideration, with football becoming a secondary matter.

'We’ve had to adjust – we changed things around at the weekend and came in on the Sunday to train. We then trained on the pitch after Wednesday’s game was called off, which is something we wouldn’t normally do, but we needed to get something into the boys’ legs.

'So we’ll go to Swansea having not played a game for three weeks, which has both its positives and its drawbacks. I’m sure they’ll be thinking that it’s a boost for us because we’re nice and fresh, while they’ve had tough matches against Leeds and Derby.

'But we don’t think it’ll make a huge amount of difference and we’ll have to be ready to face a side that possess a real threat.'
