What in the Hell happened? Could it be the lying parasitic politicians wasting our money?

Not if it is your main residence because you get private residence relief as a general rule. Still best to check because outside factors could influence this.

Just to clarify, I know what I need to know, I’m not asking for advice . I’m just posing the question to see what people’s replies are.

Would you like to elaborate? Your reply is what nearly everybody would say, even my accountant!

They tax us and they tax us
They tell us to pay more
But they put so much on expenses
So we have learned the score

We know we're being ripped off
We know it's us who pays the price
They think we are too stupid
to see tney tax us twice

They tax us til the pips squeak
then they tax us some more
they waste our money every day
then they tell us we are poor

We can't afford this or that
we can't afford very much
but when it's something THEY want
the public purse is an easy touch

So learn the lesson everyone
remember who you voted in
and make yourself a promise
to not be fooled again.

OK, here’s the answer.

Firstly, and more well known is that if you use your home for business activity, then the portion of the house used can attract tax relief but on sale will be subject to CGT.

Secondly, and not a lot of people know this, if your house has more than 0.5 Ha of land then you may be forced to pay CGT . You’d have to prove that the extra amount of land is ‘enjoyed by the property’ in other words it would be necessary in the sale of the property.

This is one of the most random taxes I know of. Why 0.5 Ha? Why get penalised for having a large garden.

It is incumbent on the homeowner to declare this of course but how many would know. When I sold my house, I had no idea of the tax. My accountant didn’t either but it was picked up rather unfortunately by HMRC who I then had to fight by engaging a specialist lawyer and coming up with everything I could. Luckily, I won but if I’d lost it would have been a bill in excess of £100k.

Kevin Gillett, now retired, who was Director of Banking at Lloyd's HBOS wrote on social media recently.
'In 2009 Rachel Reeves was 3 levels below me.
She was a Complaints Support Manager NOT an Economist.
She nearly got sacked due to an expenses scandal when Managers were found to have been signing off each others expenses.
She then had lots of doctor and dental appointments and so was followed.
It turned out she was doing Labour Party business.
When confronted, she resigned'.
Mr Gillett asked for this to be shared with as many people as possible.

No, depending on the value it’ll be IHT.

I was assuming this was recently inherited. It may be different if you’ve owned the house for some time though where you may be liable to CGT. I’m not sure on that or timescales so you’d need to see an accountant or lawyer for the definitive answer.
