Manning updates??? on 08:52 - Oct 17 with 2191 views | derbyhoop | We bought a raw, left sided midfielder for peanuts. Developed him into a Championship level player Converted him, not totally successfully, into a left back. I wonder how many of the 76 goals we conceded last year came because Manning was caught out of position or ball watching? Neither the club, the player nor his agent could come to a deal that suited all parties. Better for all concerned if he moves on. Gossip about a £5m fee from a PL club was total bollix. If the fee was about £250K that is disappointing but it's what Championship clubs will be paying in current climate. Better than sweet FA in 3 months time.

Manning updates??? on 06:38 - Oct 17 by HAYESBOY | No denying he had a great left foot and his crossing is missed at the moment. But he is never a left back, at best a wing back. Lost count of the times he was caught out at the back and also never shutting down crosses or closing down outside the box. Would of liked to have seen him in midfield to see if he could cement a place there but its much more important that BOS signs on than Manning. If the fee is £250k then a little disappointed in that but better than nothing at the end of the season.. Think Warbs will have to use Hamelinen now as Wallace will not play consecutive games in 21 days. |

It's only ten weeks until the window opens again anyway. Most likely anyone we'd have been looking at would be of similar seniority to Niko so it's a question of potential, or realising of potential. See if he takes his chance, if not reassess January and he's out of contract come summer (or he turns out great, immediately refuses to extend and forces a move ha ha). Seems sensible enough.

How did you work that one out? Warburton’s just got rid of Manning because he didn’t want to sign a new contract and stay at the club. Same applied to Luongo and Bidwell. I’m surprised at the mental gymnastics from some in this thread trying to place the blame on Warburton. He’s not perfect but we can’t have players running down their contracts and leaving for free. Sorry mate, I’ve just re-read your post and my mistake- I misinterpreted. I’m blaming an early start with the little one! [Post edited 17 Oct 2020 9:12]

Exactly. They weren't queuing down South Africa Road with their cheque books, so he is worth what the only second division club who wanted him offered and the lateness of this being confirmed, suggests it wasn't his dream move either and he was waiting to see if a better wage came from elsewhere.
Manning updates??? on 09:41 - Oct 17 with 1913 views | kernowhoop | He was unhappy. he was offered a new contract, but, he declined and wanted to go. That gave the manager an extra problem that he could well do without. The press talked up the level of interest in Manning and unrealistic sums of money were being bandied about. But, the true level of interest was very low. When it was clear that Swansea were likely to buy him, no other clubs appeared to enter the bidding. He has now been sold for £250,000. Like it or not, that was the market price for Ryan Manning last week. He has gone. He is no longer a problem for QPR and the club will bank £250,000. If Manning had been happy at QPR, we could have dreamt of much better outcomes. But, he did not want to stay, so, in the circumstances, it was a good outcome. We move on, we thank Ryan Manning and we wish him success, don't we?

Manning updates??? on 07:06 - Oct 17 by traininvain | Hung out to dry by Warburton?! Do me a favour. Manning refused to sign a new contract and forced this move. That’s his prerogative so I’m not digging him out. But Warburton can’t be starting players who don’t want to be at the club. |
Manning was under contract for one more year. He was under no obligation to sign a new contract His only obligation was to play this year, which he did, including subjecting himself to meaningless u23 games (which he played in, quite well btw) He clearly showed he was committed to playing for the club. At any point has he seemed to be binning it in like toner hemed or grant hall? Give me a break. He did nothing wrong.... imagine if we did the same to eze, holding a gun to his head until he extended his contract.... does anyone rly genuinely believe this behavior is appropriate? Would you like it if your boss did this to you? Putting aside the precedent, we’ve sold a pretty decent (albeit flawed) player for 250k when he shouldve gotten more
Manning updates??? on 10:38 - Oct 17 with 1624 views | OakR | I'm happy he has gone as it suits all parties. I think it's a shame we did not do more with him in midfield, and he think he could have done well for us our left this season, or as a wingback. As we seemed to not rate him in midfield, and want to play 4 at the back where he is not at his best, I think this will work out better for him and us. We get some money from the sale, save wages, he gets to play and as mentioned elsewhere we've set and stuck to our precedent (though be interesting to see what happens with BOS). I wish him well, I don't think he has behaved badly, he's not said he wasn't going to play, only (we assume) we didn't want to sign a new contract on the terms we offered which is hardly a crime! I won't miss the dramatic falling over but wish him well!

The fact is Manning didn’t want to be at the club and would’ve left for free next summer so we took the money. Can’t blame the club and definitely don’t blame Warburton for dropping a player who made it clear he didn’t want to stay at the club. If you want players at the club who don’t actually want to be here then fair enough but I’m glad we’ve not let a player run down his contract and go for free next summer. Not digging out Manning. He’s well within his rights. But so are the club and that’s who I support QPR FC not Ryan Manning FC. Your last point makes no sense. If he was worth more than £250k another club would’ve come in for him. But they didn’t and the best offer we had was £250k so that’s his market value.

Yep, agreed with everything The precedent argument annoys me for so many reasons 1) how many managers have we had in the last 10 years? is MW even going to be around 2 transfer windows from now to even apply this precedent? 2) any precedent has to be consistently applied, and last time i checked, BOS is still not under contract. Separately, QPR are now in a tricky bind where every goal/assist he notches increases his value and therefore makes it harder for us to resign.... 3) precedent works both ways too. I am not aware of any other club taking this position with any players in the final year of a contract .If youre a free agent choosing between QPR and another similarly situated club offering comparable wages, are you going to want to go to the team that honors your contract, or that expects you to have to re-sign a contract when you have one year left (or else will freeze you out)? im willing to accept that manning is an average leftback with a load of defensive weaknesses, and that we may not be much worse without him... however, i dont think that 250k (if that is in fact the fee) is an acceptable amount for a player with his CV/age/stats/fitness record. clearly, this did not work disappointed to see people write off a player who clearly tried for us and consistently put in a shift.... his debut was on the back of 6 consecutive losses against wolves, and he brought a spark to the team that helped salvage that season (good performances against wolves, reading and then fulham).... at the back end of the mclaren season, he came in as leftback against millwall, and helped us secure an invaluable point that also helped us stay up.... was frozen out behind scowen/lungo/freeman and worked hard to get back into the team... are we rly going to forget all this?

Just to clarify, Manning never indicated that he didnt want to be at the club. He solely indicated that he did not want to stay at the club based on the terms that QPR was willing to offer. Which begs the question: do you know what QPR offered him? perhaps he wouldve stayed at the club if they offered him more money, more years or some other assurances about position, etc? we dont know, so we cant speculate. for all we know, QPR offered him half of what he couldve been getting at a club like swansea as for your last point, by your logic, you can never criticize a transfer fee b/c the market stipulates what the transfer fee was... its a circular argument... second, even if i accept that no other clubs were interested (perhaps you're right) you neglect to consider the point that we couldve extracted more of a transfer free from swansea.... my point is that QPR backed themselves into a corner from a negotiating perspective. Swansea knew that our alternative (b/c of Warburton's public statements) was to freeze him out until January, which is clearly not in our interests... we effectively negotiated with our hands tied behind our back, and that influenced the transfer fee we were able to generate... external factors dictate "market price" (eg you know wigan need cash so will take any price, brentford arent desperate to sell b/c they can genuinely make the prem), and qprs statements were one such external factor
Manning updates??? on 11:09 - Oct 17 with 1470 views | Phildo | In an era of shthouse agents who are better resourced than clubs the way to succeed may be to be a club that improves players and allows them move on to bigger things. Every player at the club knows what happens to players who do not sign extensions and know we will sell if they do sign and a reasonable offer comes in. It has not exactly worked out for Luongo who I think would rather be near his family in London or for Bidwell either. Manning has gambled based on the advice he got and now he’s s trading london for Swansea which is not exactly Milan (tm Danny Rose) - good luck son you may need it
Manning updates??? on 11:09 - Oct 17 with 1467 views | Noelmc | I don't suppose we will know the inside story on this until Clive does a 'Hogan-type' interview with Ryan in 10-15 years time when he has finished playing and is looking back on his time with the R's. I can certainly see the Club's viewpoint on this and the message they want to send to other players about seeing out their contract. I'm happy to support this along as they do not treat others preferentially, so it will be interesting to see how the BOS situation pans out. Personally, I'm sad to see him go and agree with others that his attitude was good and certainly a lot better than others such as Hall & Robinson, who the Club helped through injuries etc but did not repay that support. For me, Ryan was the classic example of WarbsBall, great going forward but shaky at the back. I wish him well for the future and thank him for giving me one of my great QPR memories of recent years when he left the other RM in his wake as he headed in our first goal in the fantastic 3-1 win at Villa Park in 2018-19. No point in speculating. We know the club offered Manning a new contract which he rejected. We don’t know the terms but we do know that Manning didn’t want to accept the club’s offer so best to move him on for all parties involved. Of course the market dictates the price. Same as if you sell your house. It’s only worth what someone’s willing to pay at that point in time. Do you honestly think the club didn’t try to achieve maximum value? Finally on your last point, if you don’t think that Manning’s agent would’ve told other clubs that he’d run down his contract and leave for free then you’re being naive. I think you’re looking at this the wrong way. Manning and his agent were calling the shots here. Clubs have limited control in this situation.

no point in speculating, but you have.... they obviously tried to extract maximum value. my point is that they did a bad job in this instance.. again, its a circular argument if someone wants to buy my house and I tell them I've lost my job, need the cash, am desperate to sell and have a bookie that's going to break my legs if I don't pay them £50k in a week, the counterparty is going to offer me less, no? this is not some hypothetical example from a university economics textbook where we assume there are no external factors... the surrounding factors matter don't rly see what point youre trying to make in the last paragraph, and your argument isn't any stronger by calling me naïve.... but do you really think manning called the shots? last time I checked, the person who brought this issue to a head was mark warburton by saying he wouldn't play manning until he resigned....

This. The worst case scenario would have been him continuing to rot in the U23s not even on our bench while all of our bright, enthusiastic new players get tainted by him not wanting to be there.
Manning updates??? on 11:39 - Oct 17 with 1322 views | BrianMcCarthy | If £250k + add-ons is all we could get for him then that is disappointing, and there's no point us denying that. It's a pittance. There's also little point us casting anyone who wants to leave on a Bosman as a villain. We can legitimately say we are disappointed and that we expected more, but leaving on a Bosman is fully within a player's rights just as much as releasing a player on a free transfer is within a club's rights. We can't condemn one action and support the other. What we can say as fans is what each of us seen on the pitch. Our views on that are as valid and as open to discussion as anyone else's. And to my mind Manning was a decent player in attack because he didn't mind doing that. He deigned to do that part of his duty. He honoured us with his commitment to that part of his duty. But in defense he often, some might say regularly, decided not to mark up, not to track back, not to challenge, not to commit. Not every ball that went over his head was his fault, many were due to his being played as an advanced full-back, or as a wing-back. But every ball that went over his head needed to be chased, had to be chased, should have been chased. Many weren't. We all saw the instances, the far, far too many instances when he just sauntered back having clearly made the decision that the danger behind him may or may not have been his fault but clearly was none of his concern. And he wasn't the first footballer to fail to mark his man for a penalty. Three times. And try to blame his team-mates afterwards. Or to fall over injured with a regularity that went way beyond embarrassing a long, long, long time ago. All of the above were within his control, all of them were within his physical capabilities, all of them were decisions he made. And he showed no signs of changing his mind on any of them. As an Irish supporter, I hope he does have a re-think as there's a very good player in there if he decides to commit fully as a professional. But as a QPR supporter I don't mind that he could have stayed but decided not to, I will only remember him as a player who could have given more but decided not to. Many, many, times.

Manning updates??? on 11:40 - Oct 17 with 1315 views | danehoop | Why do you think they did a bad job? Just interested as this was the only offer. If we didn't take it, he goes for nothing in the summer. Its unfortunate perhaps, but they did extract the maximum value from an asset which was about to become of zero value and would otherwise continue to be paid a wage, however relatively small that might be. So an initial 250k (which implies potential add ons and sell ons) and a likely reduction of in excess of of 100k from the wage bill for the remainder of the season. No matter how good/bad we as fans think he is or what speculative value we might put on him, the player is only worth what the market is willing to play. In this case, in his circumstances - lower mid championship player who, whilst clearly talented, isn't quite a left back, left wing or left midfield. He may be good, he might not be, but the lack of concrete interest from other clubs gives and indication of both the current market and the external view of the player. Whatever his agent might have been pumping out concerning alleged interest from others, the reality is only one club came in. We did the best deal we could in the circumstances and all parties are satisfied. We move on.
