| Forum Thread | Wieghorst: Jonjo Shelvey tipped for bright future at 10:39 9 Dec 2013
Swansea City's assistant manager Morten Wieghorst believes Jonjo Shelvey is destined for big things domestically and internationally. Still only 21 years of age, the highly-rated midfielder has already taken in a high-profile move to Liverpool and a £5million switch to the Liberty Stadium. He has also turned out for England at every level, including one senior cap against San Marino in October 2012. A number of impressive displays this season suggest he could force his way into Roy Hodgson's plans for the 2014 World Cup. Wieghorst would be delighted to see Shelvey's talents recognised by a seat on the plane to Brazil, but is convinced the youngster will go from strength to strength regardless of whether he is selected or not. The former Celtic midfielder said: "I don't think the English manager has made up his mind yet but Jonjo obviously is a young man and if he keeps playing like this, who knows? "It is maybe a bit too early to say about the World Cup but I think he's got a very bright future. "He's got so many qualities as a footballer. He's technically gifted, he sees the game well, he sees the pass, he has a strike on him and I think playing as the advanced man in a three-man midfield suits him very well because it's easier for him to get closer to goal, make his deep runs and he has more security behind him. "I know he plays on the edge at times, but I think you need that, he certainly does as long as you know where to draw the line." "I know he (Shelvey) plays on the edge at times, but I think you need that." Morten Wieghorst Next up for Shelvey and Swansea is a home date with Hull City on Monday, an encounter Wieghorst insists the home side will not be taking lightly - with Steve Bruce's Tigers having impressed upon their return to the top tier. "They've definitely surprised me a little bit," he said. "The points they've collected so far, for a promoted team is very good. "I watched bits of their game against Liverpool, and they performed well and deserved the win so they can't be taken lightly. "Not so long ago Swansea were the newcomers in the Premier League, Hull have put up some great performances and picked up points so we should know what it's all about." | Forum Thread | ML: Michu and Williams are staying at 20:13 21 Aug 2013
http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11670/8881628/transfer-news-swansea-boss Swansea manager Michael Laudrup has dismissed reports linking Michu and Ashley Williams with a move to Arsenal. Laudrup is determined to hang onto the pair and fears the club would struggle to find suitable replacements before the end of the transfer window if they were to let them go. "It would cause huge damage because if you lose players of that quality you have to find replacements of the same level," he said. "That is why we cannot do that so late. If you sell someone and then try to buy, people know you have a lot of money. "The price for the replacement would automatically go higher and higher, that's inevitable." Laudrup has made eight new signings over the summer, most notably the £12million signing of Vitesse Arnhem striker Wilfried Bony and the capture of Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for £5million. Laudrup also admitted he is unhappy the summer transfer window remains open once the season has begun. "It's part of the game and as long as the rules are like that we get on with it," he added. "I went to the Premier League managers' meeting last week and one of the questions asked was why we could not move the transfer deadline. "What is the reason to have it close after we have started the season here and in Spain and Germany? "The answer was that in the other big leagues there was not a lot of interest in moving it. "I cannot understand why not, because every manager should be interested in having the deadline closed when they play the first game." [Post edited 21 Aug 2013 20:13]
