Swansea City v Reading : Matchday Thread 2021/22 MATCHDAY on 17:57 - Nov 27 by DwightYorkeSuperstar | "in amongst todays poor performance was passing for the sake of passing. A lot of passes between the back 3 and Grimes and Smith, we didn't take forward options when they were there, it was as if we wer hie scared to take the chance" What you have described is no different to the supposed wondergoal we scored against Barnsley last week. The 37 passes in the build up to that goal were pointless. They didn't drag any opposition players out of position. They didn't force the opposition to close us down. They didn't break any of Barnsley's defensive lines. It took about 32 passes for a Swansea player to actually try something that wasn't 100% safe (Ntcham), dropping his shoulder and beating his man, creating a shooting opportunity 3 or 4 passes later (albeit from 25 yards and still not behind Barnsley's defence). Whatever attacking routines we practice are not translating well to competitive matches. |
The big difference being Barnsley were stacked up behind the ball. reading closed us down quickly but still there were spaces and opportunities. It was the pace of our game that worried me more, we were so slow at everything. Several times manning was in acres of space and instead of one quick pass out to him it took 3 slow, short passes by which time he was closed down. If you're going to break the oppo lines you need pace. It was pace that won it for them today, they were much quicker going forward. Obviously our massive mistakes helped them but pace got them there too.

Swansea City v Reading : Matchday Thread 2021/22 MATCHDAY on 18:28 - Nov 27 with 1170 views | Dr_Parnassus | We have certainly taken 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Plan A is beginning to rear its ugly head again, there seems to be a conscious effort to go back to pointless passing for the sake of passing with far less focus on concise attacks and smart defence. No direct game at all. Whenever we revert to this, everything slows down considerably. We become extremely predictable and the opponents wait to simply pick us off. I hope he had had it confirmed how damaging it is and stops going back to a system that has shown itself to not be fit for purpose time and time again. [Post edited 27 Nov 2021 18:38]

Swansea City v Reading : Matchday Thread 2021/22 MATCHDAY on 17:32 - Nov 27 by Dr_Winston | Crap day at the office. If you can't defend straight from the kickoff then you deserve nothing and nothing is what we got. Twice. Not going to single any particular players out even though it would be easy to. Simply must do better next game. |
Wasn't it just. To shrug it off as such is a tad demeaning and insulting to the collective cause. What is it we could have done better ? Any ideas ? I truly doubt you have any idea. Maybe some fans should think of Solutions instead of always looking at Who and What to blame. Not expecting anything from Winston on this - way above his pay grade. Doesn't do constructive critique, too risky. . . . . ..

I was concerned when I saw the lineup , too negative, and Williams was a strange one. Think RM got it slightly wrong today, but can't legislate for individual errors today.

It has to stop. It really does. Team selection terrible today too. Knew we were going up against an incredibly Andy Carroll so we drop Cabango the defender with most physicality and play Naughton in the heart of defence. Just ugly decision making.

Martin has an arrogance which I fear may be his undoing. Admirably he wants to play the game in an attractive way..now in his second full season of management he needs to learn that its getting results which is prime...sometimes that means playing a different way. He seems to have a strange way of managing players and what was that today dropping Cobango completely from the squad and playing Williams?

Some on here post more when we lose which says a lot about the individual. But this Cooper love in has gone on too long now. There will be a few hoping he gets the bragging rights on the 11th. Sad really as he couldn't away quick enough after Ayew left.

He got it very wrong. Rhys' first start for how long? Against Caroll!! I hadn’t realised just how one footed Williams is. (Memo to Cabango… leave before your career is wrecked.) Smith for Downes😳 Bennett. Lived out of position. Grimes was back to his pre-contract standard with zero leadership. Messed around with back line again and got punished again. No urgency from 5th to 75th minute. Passing was awful and very negative. Ball kept being plaid to Laird who was in the pocket of their left back all afternoon. Shocking, shocking, shocking play after scoring .. twice. Manning pushed forward but didn’t offer much in defence. Then Cullen; apart from give away a foul what did he contribute?

| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

You can certainly limit the chance of them happening. There was a very simple pass to play to Hamer who could clear the danger, but doing that means we would play a long ball. So it was decided to play across the face of defence, played it badly, intercepted and scored. Hamers long ball game was noticeably absent today, it was by design. I think he made around 7 all game, where usually he leads the day with high teens. We also said time and time again when we play like this, our line is extremely high as we try and pin possession. We are always liable to be taken out by a straight ball over the top and we were again, by Andy ‘5mph’ Carroll. Unless you have incredibly quick defenders that’s suicide. Martin has enjoyed the praise for our upturn in form, rightly so as he consciously changed things to make them work. He must now take the criticism as he’s clearly taken a conscious decision to revert to how it was. I just hope it’s yet another wake up call that it is not a game plan that works, regardless if you win now and again with it. It’s the wrong tactic.

because when we lose I'm frustrated especially when we do so like today......Cooper is long gone my focus is more on Martin...though it seems his fanboys take offence if any critique offered.

They didn’t show a replay that showed his position when the ball was passed to him so it’s impossible to say unless you were sitting in the stand overlooking the move on the pitch. He was yards in front of number 46 (Williams.?) when he received it but that’s irrelevant.
