So points dropped against Plymouth, MK, Blackpool and Charlton, will be easier to deal with if we win the other games

Possibly but some of those teams may yet get dragged back into it. If we were to find 15 points from those games we’d all be pretty happy and although it’s possibly a big ask looking at the season so far, if we don’t find some form we’ll be in very big trouble by March.

After the 'great escapes' under Hill and then BBM. I am probably a bit too optimistic that if necessary we can pull it off again.

Don’t put that on social media, whatever you do. Apparently it’s a “harsh” point of view.

Since when has reality been shamed as a harsh point of view?

Depends on whether the players like their shin pads or not.

I’m afraid there are plenty on other social media platforms that disagree.

I’m reminded of General Melchett’s quote at this point: “ If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.”

We have players capable of steering us to a safe position in the table, however we struggle to get enough of them on the pitch at the same time. Again I urge the board to support the team and bring in at least a couple of experienced players.
Don’t get me wrong I thought today was a great effort and speaks volumes about to desire to overcome the struggles to get anything like a best 11 on the pitch. I thought Evans was going to do the double over us when we fielded our 2 weakest sides this season.
Hope Beesley can get back for Tuesday, Humphrys would be a real bonus. But I am prepared for us putting the same team out against the most inform team in the league.
I’ll just take the positives from today for now.

You can’t just take the positives, though. You need to look at the negatives too, otherwise you can’t form informed opinions. Individually, I believe we have a better squad than Accrington and we have one of the best strikers in League One. Collectively it isn’t quite working overall. It just isn’t. Pointing this out shouldn’t be a hanging offence. Yes we need more players, but the approach to games needs to improve too.

Fitz I have no problem with you having your views and expressing them. Just like I have no problem just taking the positives for now. My choice.
When we can put out a decent side and have a a few on the bench who can actually impact a game i’ll Raise my expectations and be more critical. Getting there is down to the board right now.
My glass has only just been restored to half full, and I am trying to keep it that way as long as possible.

Fair enough. But just like you can disagree with my outlook, I can challenge yours. That’s the beauty of this forum.

It’s the basics that are the problem. BBM mentions improving our defending and set pieces in his post match interview so let’s look at a couple of things to start:

- stop playing risky football which could lead to giving away possession and conceding set pieces in our last third. We won’t concede if we get rid in such situations and give away a throw in on the halfway line.

- do not vacate your position unless it is safe to do so. This applies particularly to centre halves.

That the manager isn’t dealing with this sort of thing is down to the approach we choose to take. Tell defenders not to do those things and see if it helps improve our ability to stop conceding goals.

We also need that leadership on the pitch, that snarling voice that apparently McShane displayed in his last game.

The manager needs to get players nastier with their team mates during the game.

I don’t think suggesting we need defensive reinforcements has been described as ‘harsh.’ I think what people object to is, as I alluded to a few days ago, being told that without these reinforcements we’re guaranteed to be relegated, which simply isn’t true. We’ve only been in the bottom 4 for a total of roughly a week or so all season. If we’d been in Burton’s position all season I could accept statements like, ‘without signing more defenders we’ll be in League Two next season.’

As it is, we’re not in that position, and if things carry on as they are we’re likely to finish roughly where we are now. Other teams will come into form but they’ll also have long winless streaks, and we’ll have both too.

So I think that people object not to the notion that we’re in trouble, because obviously we are, but to being told that without reinforcements there is objectively no hope for us, and any contrary opinions being mocked as not worthy of debate.

The biggest frustration for me yesterday was how we went about managing injury time.

We gave the ball away several times in those three minutes, really unnecessarily.

Dooley had a throw in on the left which he threw behind for a goal kick, followed by Newby needlessly getting tackled, giving the ball away, which led to the long throw.

We knew for the previous 10 minutes they had the long throw specialist, as well as Akinde on the pitch & contrived to give them the opportunity. Similar to Jim giving the referee the opportunity to send him off last week.

Osho got a great header on the initial throw, but ultimately the melee & carnage that followed went against us as it so often does.

My fear is that we have the defensive mental strength of candy floss & unfortunately this is something that needs to be instilled from the top.

Keohane had a great second half offensively yesterday, the 2 goals however don’t make up for the defensive showing.

I’m all for positivity & agree that there are a faction within our fan base who have the sole intention of being nothing but negative.

However there are negative elements to our team & these must be addressed, all excuses aside.

You’ve said this a couple of times now, Shun, but I’ve yet to see your opinion mocked. Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong places?

And it’s not the call for signings that I have been criticised for, but the pointing out of flaws in BBM’s approach on a game by game basis. It’s as if that’s just not allowed and that’s what I take exception to, because I point out the positives too. No other Dale manager in my lifetime has been afforded such grace (not even Keith Hill). Maybe I’m getting older and the majority of the fans on social media are younger, with a sunnier disposition. I’ll never change the way I look at games, though, nor will I stop expressing my opinion on them as long as I am able to do so.

It actually doesn’t bother me that my overall opinion is disagreed with (we may or may not go down), it’s more that people take exception to any negative facts as they are laid out.

I think I the only contrary opinions Fitzo has taken objection to (and voiced on here) are those of the general football bloggers who put themselves forward as being very knowledgeable on every league and every team despite not watching those teams on a regular basis - or indeed on any basis!

And, as I posted last week, one of them threw his toys out last summer when it was pointed out that his interpretation of the Henderson situation was completely wrong. It seems he's only interested in people who tell him how great he is.

That’s right. If that’s what Shun is alluding to, then I pointed out to one such individual that given I had seen every game this season and he had seen not a single one in its entirety (as he admitted) then his opinion, which was that my latest writing was harsh, just wasn’t valid to me. How can it be? We are not approaching our outlook from an equal footing.
