It's a shame he picked up some injuries in the last season or so, because when we beat Everton 1-0 in our first season back in the Premier League, I thought he was their stand out player in that match and he was just 17 years old back then.

He looks like he has a bright future ahead of him and he's come on a bit since then as well, as you would hope and expect, but after he had some injury troubles, you can never be too sure. I like what I've seen of him and Jack Wilshire, so England need to hope they remain injury free and keep developing as they're a different breed to what we've seen come through in the last five to ten years.

True, he looks good. But has he earned a place in the England team?

He has if nobody else wants to do it.

Well, you could ask that question about so many of the current squad, certainly if you went on actual form, then he's started the season well and better than some of the other players.

Then you look at the type of match it is, and whether it's the right environment, and in this case, the game was won and they want to give him some competitive experience, so that's probably why he was chosen ahead of some of the more experienced players. They probably don't want to risk him for matches just yet if they are too critical and a lot is at stake.

And if you look back down the years, so many players came through with little senior football under their belts. That's what happened with Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney for a start, and to a degree, Jack Wilshire. A lot of those players had anywhere between 10-30 competitive matches under their belt before being thrown in, which, is about what Barkely has had now — albeit half of those have come at Championship level, with the other half being for Everton (along with substitute appearances).

The reality is though, there's not a massive pool of players to pick from, and if any of these younger players establish themselves at "smaller" clubs, then they should get a chance really. I'm sick and tired of seeing players picked when they're either out of form or out of the team for their club side.

England will need to rely on chaps like these as well, if they are serious about evolving the culture and style of play — they're currently trying to do that with players that are not really capable or brought up in that mould.

Germany did it, and look at them now, they probably have 30-50 players that can make that first team squad and who are all relatively young and that's because they invested the time, patience and strategy to pull it off. They've obviously not won anything yet, but they have an exciting side, players that you enjoy watching and hope.

As usual you talk sense, but I have difficulty in accepting that someone with that lack of experience - almost no experience - has proved that they should be given the responsibility (& the privilege) of playing for England. Maybe I look at it in an old-fashioned way, but I think that to represent your country you should have proved yourself at the top level. A high number of fans will never have heard of him, let alone seen him play

He also belongs to an elite group of players who have lost to us in a Premiership game.

Half the problem with the England team selection over the years is relying constantly on the same old faces, and from the same old clubs.

As most of the 'star players' in the top division are foriegners, the pool of English talent is small, if Welbeck & Lambert are the best strikers available then that proves just how shallow the pool is.

Chances will have to be taken at times with young players, Moldovia are a very weak team and risk was extremly low but maybe even in high risk games chances will have to be taken because if not the national team will stagnate even more than it has for decades.

Well worth playing the likes of Barkley in the squad, 3 years on from the last world cup we still have gerrard and lampard starting games with no one good enough to replace them so we may as well start to look at the next generation now, a future midfield 3 of Wilshire, Oxlade Chamerblain and Barkley would be pretty good imo

I'm just not sure that putting inexperienced players into international games is beneficial to their ongoing development.

Poll: Do you think this current QPR team has got what is takes to go up this year?

Been saying for a long time that I would pick players and the teams now that were going to be there or there abouts as my first choice for 2016/18 and beyond. As Neil mentioned Germany did it, they took a young team that had come up together through U21 level and let them have a go together, they didnt win, but we wont with any choice of team we have, but they gained experience individually and playing together.

I would fck off pretty much everybody 30 or over and have a team of your Oxlade Chamberlains, Phil Jones, Wilsheres, Barkley, Zaha, Walker etc. Personally I think they should have all been part of a generation playing at U21 level together with sporadic involvement with the senior team before making the step up together post tournament. They might have come close with every eligible player available.

Not seen too much of him apart from on a highlight reel - yesterday thought he was outstanding, superb touch, always had his head up, took his goal brilliantly. If he progresses to fulfil his potential likely to be a major player for England.

To be honest can't remember being as impressed with a young English player for a long long time.

If not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled. PG Wodehouse

This guy has qualities you don’t associate with English players — dribbling ability, eye for a pass, both feet. Whenever I’ve seen him I’ve been impressed.

I’m probably the only one, but how he runs with the ball, and his upper body strength and touch, he reminds me of our very own Adel, but without the over the top show boating.
