Looks like Mandelson is to be the Uk's ambassador to the USA. This despite twice having to resign from the Cabinet, first for an undisclosed loan to finance his mortgage and then in a "cash for passport " scandal.
He is an ex EU commissioners and as such still receives a hefty pension from the EU.
This looks like cronyism at its best. UK Ambassadors are usually career diplomats not former politicians.
He will no doubt continue push his pro EU and anti Brexit views.
We’ve had non diplomat ambassadors before, some appointed by the Conservatives and some appointed by Labour.
Mandelson is a clever guy and he may be able to relate and get on with Trump, but he’s not a guy if have gone for. If he can deliver a decent trade deal, it may be an inspired move. Not holding my breath though.

I'd say that Mandelson is indeed a clever operator, with a smooth line of patter, but my worry would be that his past policy positions are so diametrically opposed to the policies of Trump's inner circle that there is bound to be tension. The fact that Farage has close connections with some of the Trump insiders won't help. A (younger) Chris Patten type would have worked better.

Crushing comment Brilliant What a pair
Chris LaCivita, Trump's Campaign Manager has called Mandelson an ' Absolute Moron ' today.
Starmer is obviously great at sounding out candidates with stakeholders. The current Ambassador Dame Karen Pierce is highly regarded in Washington, she's been in post for 4 years, previous our permanent representative at the UN and a long career in representing the UK abroad.
