Looks like Mandelson is to be the Uk's ambassador to the USA. This despite twice having to resign from the Cabinet, first for an undisclosed loan to finance his mortgage and then in a "cash for passport " scandal.
He is an ex EU commissioners and as such still receives a hefty pension from the EU.
This looks like cronyism at its best. UK Ambassadors are usually career diplomats not former politicians.
He will no doubt continue push his pro EU and anti Brexit views.
We’ve had non diplomat ambassadors before, some appointed by the Conservatives and some appointed by Labour.
Mandelson is a clever guy and he may be able to relate and get on with Trump, but he’s not a guy if have gone for. If he can deliver a decent trade deal, it may be an inspired move. Not holding my breath though.

I'd say that Mandelson is indeed a clever operator, with a smooth line of patter, but my worry would be that his past policy positions are so diametrically opposed to the policies of Trump's inner circle that there is bound to be tension. The fact that Farage has close connections with some of the Trump insiders won't help. A (younger) Chris Patten type would have worked better.

Crushing comment Brilliant What a pair
Chris LaCivita, Trump's Campaign Manager has called Mandelson an ' Absolute Moron ' today.
Starmer is obviously great at sounding out candidates with stakeholders. The current Ambassador Dame Karen Pierce is highly regarded in Washington, she's been in post for 4 years, previous our permanent representative at the UN and a long career in representing the UK abroad.

Keir is. Poor judge really
Yes, now given a peerage to Sue Gray, what a joke the house of Lords is, £315 every time they sign in, plus travel expenses, and some on here are talking about sharing the pain.
The members finance scheme for allowances and expenses totalled £21 million, puts things in perspective
You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

Mandelsohn must have some juicy stuff on the Labour party to get this gig, hell to get any gig now. He was in disgrace, hasn't been invovled for years and out of the blue....
What does he know?

Our main strength is hypocrisy and lies Our two main strengths are hypocrisy, lies and deceit Our three main strengths are hypocrisy, lies, deceit and double standards Our four main strengths are............
The naivety of the appointment is beginning to show.
The LaCivitas tweet...
This UK government is special. Replace a professional universally respected ambassador with an absolute moron – he should stay home! SAD!
And Trump refused to answer phone calls from our government. Just WTF does Starmer think he's doing? Trump had apparently said he wouldn't accept Mandelsohn as ambassador and may even use his veto.
I've heard people say Starmer is a clever man, sensible, a thinker. It really doesn't look like it.

Any one think this appointment in being divisive between us and Trump thus kicking a potential trade deal with America into touch followed by a drive by Labour to cosy up more to the EU citing trade deals etc?

Even the Telegraph calls Mandelson a "political genius".
He has diplomatic skills and can make the US people understand that our interests align. We have assets like Cyprus, Ascencion Island and Diego Garcia.
From google REALPOLITIK , politics based on practical objectives rather than on ideals. The word does not mean “real” in the English sense but rather connotes “things”—hence a politics of adaptation to things as they are.

In short no. It would be hugely embarrassing for Starmer politically to have a very public fall out with the POTUS. Every postwar leader has had cordial and positive relations with their counterparts across the Atlantic despite there often being great political differences between them.
Starmer is clearly afraid of Trump. The sending of Prince William in his place to the reopening of notre dame said it all. He doesn’t like being in a situation he can’t control.

I have not been following the trade deals stuff. I do remember the Brexiteers saying this US deal would be the easiest deal to do and would be done very quickly. Gove perhaps.

Eight years later. .....Er no.
"The march of Folly" by Barbara Tuchman, give it a go.
