Must come out after today and Oxford, regardless of injuries/results. Another absolutely indefensible performance today. I know Marti's stretched, but Paal should have been on at half-time, if not sooner. In the words of Roy Keane, your eyes don't lie to you.

Yes I thought he was dreadful.
Has a lot going for him, but he simply has no left foot which leads to all sorts of issues. In the 15 mins before he went off he defended abysmally too . I think maybe he was just exhausted .

I hope come January he goes back to being Jimmy’s cover (Santos now out of the squad completely ) and we get a left back in to support Paal or preferably play .

Ashby needs to binned in January

He does give encouragement to any kids of limited ability that they could achieve their dream of earning a Contract in the professional game.
As I said in the match thread playing on your opposite side carries minimal weight when you cannot play a simple five yard square ball to a teammate using your correct foot. The only positive things he brings are fitness and tattoos
I know he’s young but he’s not ours, thankfully never will be, and needs to called out for having zero ability anywhere on the pitch. You can make excuses for his miss against Watford if you want citing him as a defender but do me a favour!! In midfield he is the opposition best player as his passing starts most of their attacks and whenever he finds himself in defence he is positionally awful, doesn’t tackle much, minimal aerial ability, not exactly pacey and makes criminal errors. That chest in the six yard box to set up Nahki should’ve been punished and it was so brainless I would’ve turned the bedside machine off myself if I was alongside him.

He HAS to be on the out list for January and we 1,000% must sign a left back
I know Santos has had some proper ropey showings but I’d stick with him way way way ahead of Ashby

There…… that’s off my chest

He does some good stuff but then can be very poor. I’d keep him as a reserve full back to Dunne and Paal.

Ashby on 18:14 - Dec 14 with 4550 viewscolinallcars

I'd have put a reassuring arm round his shoulder as he left the pitch and said “ don't worry son, if you're ever down in Hammersmith look me up”.

Ashby on 18:21 - Dec 14 with 4498 viewsBrizR

Yeah he was dreadful. City were at him all day - the only reason we didn't have more problems is that Morrisson basically does his job for him.

In Ashby’s defence, the two best passes made this season were both by him to Celar in the Cardiff and Watford games.

I have a fair bit of sympathy for him. Came here as a RB stand by for Jimmy and found himself in a LB position that really is not his natural calling and clearly, it shows.

Personally think he might be best suited to a right sided centre mid roll, in a three, so that won’t be here given how we set up.

He's a very difficult watch. I actually thought today was one of his better games though.

I keep reading that he's young. He's 23.

Novice in terms of the number of starts at any level of proper competitive football, but he's not that young.

Simultaneously shite and part of the best QPR defence since 1994 or something.

Harsh thread

He is playing out of position, yet the manager still had him today above our only left back in Paal and a utility left back in Fox.

I think he will be a decent player and he has not shirked from playing in an alien position.

As couple of others said, he has created two best chances for Celar.

Give the boy a chance.

We are coping OK defensively. Only two goals conceded in six games. That suggests there are not a lot of problems in defence currently.

He is way ahead of Santos too.

Absolutely ridiculous thread

As if playing left back and right back are interchangeable positions….. let’s play saito as centre back and see how he does

He’s not good as a left back (at least going forward and in possession)…. But any failure is on management for going into the season w one left back in the squad (particularly after they almost binned off paal in summer)….. would be nice if we could get lakreche back from his loan- very serviceable second left back

Spent the whole summer telling Paal he wasn't wanted.
Tried to shovel Paal to Watford.
Go into the season with Paal as your only left back option.

Sow, and reap.

Ashby looks fcking terrible to me. Worst kind of sleeve-tattooed academy footballer. Gives the ball away for fun.

But it's very QPR to turn the fire on a 23-year-old loaned right back, now playing left back, rather than asking how on earth we've recruited and retained our way into this position.

Ashby on 23:17 - Dec 14 with 3261 viewsMyke

I don't like digging any player out, when I never played at any decent level at all. But I would not be inclined to accept that you cannot play the opposite side to your strong foot. Denis Irwin made a career out of it.
To say he has no ability is disingenuous, but coming from a Premier League club, he should be able to deal with Championship wingers. Also, he has played several games at LB now, so presumably he trains there during the week - he should be doing better.
(Beck scored for Blackburn today too

The manager's wrong - it's not harsh. Which is worrying in itself. Marti is mostly competent, but his decisions are mystifying at times. After our last two first halves, he clearly still has lots to prove and improve on. We got out of jail today with a glorious bit of inspiration from Smyth, but had Brizzle been firing up front, they'd have hammered us, as Manning pretty much said post-match.

We can/should do both, viz, question the recruitment and criticise the player - the one doesn't have to exclude the other. We might be stretched, but no one was holding a gun to Marti's head today and forcing him to play Ashby until the last 10 minutes of a game that was a continuous nightmare for him. He and his manager were very lucky he didn't cost us the game, and it's not the first time.

Very right footed player being asked to play left back. Willing to play left back when asked. Not brought here to play left back but has stood in when Paal is injured. Not having a great time but this all feels a little harsh. His ability to hit some cross field passes have shown what he can do. Give the kid a break.

Never knowingly right.

Good post ,if Marti is a master motivator how can we start almost every game this season on the back foot and only step it up after half time. I know about the 3 game week, early kick off and injuries but try and run through fire for the first 10 minutes at least .
Our 3 subs were standing for over 5 minutes ready to come on then for some bizzare reason Marti sent Paal away to warm up again or something sticking with Ashby who was looking like costing us that point .It was a long few minutes until he was finally taken off for me anyway.

Ashby is 23 but he has only played 24 league games, and a handful of cup games, in the past four and a half years. Managers and coaches are forever telling us that players need games as we have seen with a couple of summer signings.

Everyone gave the ball away today not just Ashby, Varane did many times. He made a couple of good tackles today, tries to get us forward and gives it his all.

I am not saying he is a good player, I respect the views of those watching the games live, but the criticism on here is a bit OTT. Marti plays him when there are other options available.

Ashby is NOT a left back, but if anyone on here thinks Paal is the answer f**k off.

All to do with recruitment. Paal is never going to sign a new contract and has, basically, given up on QPR. An average player at best, he's downed tools and is the worst definition of a "professional".

Need a new LB in on the 1st January.

Shocking how we ended up here, but here we are...

I’d wager you if Saito was playing CB there would numerous times he’d bring the ball under control and find a team mate; not the opposition or touch.
The responses here about being young, out of position etc kind of sum up for me why Queens Park Rangers Football and Athletic Club has become the place it is. The acceptance of mediocrity is outstanding
I’d cut him marginally more slack if he was W12 blood but this fella will be gone quicker than you can say Jack Robinson

Once again this highlights our lack of Yoot depth and crucially shows fundamental flaws in our recruitment.

Maybe I’m too harsh as Clive Wilson is my all time QPR legend, surpassed only by Adel in terms of ball control, but come on….. if it quacks, flies and swims like a duck then????
