906,000
Blooming heck.
Less than 30,000 arrived by boat.

How many millions spent and news coverage given to stopping the boats. It's a tiny drop compared to the number coming in

I see Starmer is complaining about immigration yet when opposition Labour blocked every attempt to control it.

Let us see how Labour manage to reduce it.
Tony Blair opened the floodgates to mass immigration.

The 906,000 is a net migration figure, while the small boat figure relates to arrivals. The latest revised figures for total arrivals was 1.3 million for YE June 2023 and 1.2 million for YE June 2024 - really high numbers.

I find it mind blowing to learn that in recent years the number of immigrants needing to be integrated into UK society exceeds the population of Wales. That cannot have anything less than transformative effect on a society and culture.

With the incredible number of people in the UK who have never worked, are these 1m a year making up for it or just adding to the numbers?
40% of people over 16 in Birmingham have never worked in their lives.

Immigration is way off the scale, nearly a million a year completely legal migrants invited to this country is bonkers and completely unsustainable. Invited by a government who have completely destroyed public services through austerity.

It's the boats that are the problem though even though they make up less than 5% of the total. And of course Starmer's for not sorting it out in 5 months.

As I said above, the numbers of immigrants entering the UK in the last two years for which we have figures are 1.3 million and 1.2 million, not nearly a million. The latter is the net figure when people leaving are taken into account, but it is the gross figure that represents the new arrivals who need to integrate and build new lives.

Good question. I couldn't find an answer for recent immigrants, but there is some data here for UK-born, other EU born and foreign non-EU born persons.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/915732/immigrant-employment-rate-uk/

It seems that around 20% of EU born working age adults in the UK are unemployed, while it is around 25% for UK and non-EU foreign born persons.

It would be interesting to see that data broken down in to demopgraphics. I suspect a significant percentage of those non-EU persons are students if they aren't accounted for, children and women (who often don't work).

Looking around the stadium on a match day over 90% of staff in the food / drink places are immigrants, probably 40% of stewards. The Africans I've spoken to are usually Nigerian students most seem to be studying "public health", the Indians some form of engineering.

Ineterestingly despite the number of students (and families) from SE in uni in Swansea I've never seen any in work.

When I was a teenager and then a student I was dying to get a Saturday / part time job. It was difficult. Why the stadium isn't full of non-immigrants but actually local young people is a question that would go a long way to reducing our dependence on immigrant Labour. Becasue it is a dependence.

How could labour oppose it when the Tories had the majority.

Highest ever immigration figures in the year up to 2023. Take a bow Tories

It's actually gone up since we left the EU. Any comment Mr Farage ?

And some of that is going straight onto the national debt, as the current tax take isn't high enough to cover all public expenditure. The recent OBR estimate of the life-time cost of low skilled immigrants was sobering. We can benefit from some immigration but need to be more selective

It's crazy, the media are not holding politicians to account on this stuff, Starmer says he won't commit to numbers. I'm going to try that with next year's budgets at work!

It's hard to disagree with any of that. I do think the issue of over stretching resources needs to be acknowledged as a Tory austerity problem rather than immigration, but this is the situation we're in and it needs to be sorted.

It's going to cost us. It's as simple as that.

There’s been no joined up thinking in central government, the population has been allowed to increase massively but investment in public services such as the NHS hasn’t increased proportionately. Pretty much everything, roads, hospitals, public services are all in a mess.

To make matters worse, we’ve got vacancies in key sectors like care, the NHS, agriculture and food processing (not the highest paid sectors) and we’ve got a sizeable chunk of our indigenous population who don’t want to work and believe their entitled to a life on benefits. Some, have never put a penny but they are more than happy to take out.

I cant see any 1 political party being brave enough to deal with the issue because they’re going to alienate a huge chunk of the electorate, but what we need is major reform of the benefit system.

Support people who lose their job, offer retraining, etc etc, but apply a time limit to the support and if they can’t get a job within say 18 months then the support is reduced and eventually stopped. Disability payments also need to be reviewed and people should be encouraged to work doing what they can, employers given financial support for taking people off the long term sick list and in to work. W

There are huge benefits to working including self esteem, social interaction, sense of purpose, better mental health etc etc, I’m sure we’d also experience less crime as people will be productively employed. Work for the dole would be the order of the day!

Rant over.

It's a rant I agree with.

The problem is that no party can deal with the problem without being pillored.

Means testing WHA is fine, agricultural land being exposed to a reduced inheritance tax is fine too. We need to go further too.

Personally I don’t care if they arrived by Pixie Dust we are an overpopulated island. Every resource is stretched to the point where we take in any bugger house them, feed them to the tune of £15 million a day and then take money off pensioners and potentially issue a death sentence on the poorest. In case that doesn’t trim the elderly population we have now voted for “Voluntary” euthanasia. What a shithouse of a country we have become.

We don't take the majority in, we invite them because we need them. Whether that's because they pay to be at university or because we need them to work.

Is it too many? Probably. Is it too many for the services we can provide. Definitely.

Both of those are our fault.

We import them to keep up with population increase. Reducing immigration reduces the required number of NHS workers, Carers etc.
As for an increasing age in our population…well thanks to COVID and Govt cutbacks and Euthenasia law that’s not going to be a huge problem within 10 years I would have thought.

They’re all hypocrites in opposition, it’s what happens. Look at what happened when Labour introduced the minimum wage. We see it here and across the pond.

The bottom line is the current government have a majority and they can do what they want, but there’ll be no excuses in 4.5 years if they haven’t done a good job - they’ll be out.

The last Conservative government had a majority, they messed upbeat time and were held to account at the GE.
