great song writers...... on 22:17 - May 27 with 6878 views | Logman | Not a great fan of sad songs (don't mind one or two but can't do a Morrissey, Oasis or Leonard Cohen CD). Also just about wipes out most female songwriters. Agree with Elton John and Bob Dylan and would add George Michael. Protest songs don't have to be so miserable. Listen to the salsa classic 'No !' by Willie Colon.

Argh! Forgot the Boss...! Goffin & King and Bert Burns already mentioned above, but other Brill Building writers were excellent too. Especially: Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich George "Shadow" Morton Neil Sedaka Neil Diamond And, of course, the late — and perhaps not too lamented — Phil Spector [Post edited 28 May 1:27]

great song writers...... on 02:00 - May 28 with 6699 views | numptydumpty | Am stunned no one has mentioned the mercurial talent that is Gary Barlow A man with great depth of emotions and a fantastic range of rhythm, bass, vocal perfection and with such haunting melodic prose. A man not of his time and from a dimension unreachable for other mere mortals Quite simply immortal with musical gifts only the almighty possess !!! Unrivalled of his time !! History will understand him to be quite simply 'Gary the God'

great song writers...... on 09:16 - May 28 with 6631 views | Bluce_Ree | First post mentions Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon is pretty talented. If you listen to the guitar chords for the opening of 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, they are really really nice. Lots of clever inversions and shit like that. But then it turns into a really terrible sort of pop funk track with nursery rhyme lyrics. I've never listened to much S&G stuff though, I imagine there's some good stuff in there. I only really know Paul Simon for that You Can Call Me Al song.
| Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. |

The first thing to say is that Art Garfunkel was (and probably still) is NOT a songwriter! I can remember Paul Simon's reaction on Parkinson when Michael asked him who wrote the music & who wrote the lyrics! I'm biased as he is my favourite all time artist, but his songs of the early/mid 60's were relatively simple tunes with words that were special, even for the "folk protest" genre. For this old man, Paul Simon is alongside Bob Dylan & Ray Davies at the top of this list. Carol King & Carly Simon deserve mentioning as well. I'm sure there are many writers that followed just as talented, but it's hard to look past the heros of your youth!

You should take a look at Half Man Half Biscuit lyrics. They are the epitome of real life observations. Agree about Woody Guthrie very underrated.

great song writers...... on 11:57 - May 28 with 6419 views | rbee | There are so many but I would place Bacharach and David up there with Lennon and McCartney with the Gibb Brothers not far behind. The Motown crew Holland/Dozier/Holland, Smokey, Ashford and Simpson. Over at Atlantic Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill, Gerry Goffin and Carole King. As a teenager in the 70's the pop charts were dominated by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and to a lesser extent, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. As a big 80's soul music fan there was the brilliant James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, Kashif, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and over at Solar Records Dana Meyers, Leon Sylvers, William Shelby. We have to acknowledge Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of Abba and the prolific Per Gessle of Roxette. Last and right up there with the best is the lad from Grimsby who wrote all the hits for Heatwave, was taken to the USA by Quincy Jones to write for The Brothers Johnson, Donna Summer, Quincy himself, George Benson and Michael Jackson. The man who gave us Thriller, Off the Wall and Rock With You, Mr Rod Temperton.

Great post. Stevie Wonder and the Gibb brothers for me: not just for their own stuff but also the amazing songs they wrote for others.
