I’m a 5 minute slow walk from the beach, on a day like today it’s a godsend, also plenty of villages and small towns nearby for the country pub and decent restaurant vibe. |  |

If ever I moved rural I'd need to be near the sea. Even now I live in Cork City and feel happier for being close to it. But I love mountains and lakes too.

Live in Thanet. Only born in London as my mum meet a Londoner and she moved up there
Moved back down here when I was 5 and that was 63 years ago and I'm still a Down From London to the local lads.
There is quite a lot of.... overt hostility to people moving down to the coast. ...... only places like Brighton are more cosmopolitan. Most resorts are pretty closed shop due to the 2nd home.... AnB market perceived to be hoovering up local properties.

Being semi-retired three bits of advice I’d give you:
1. Unless you’re absolutely set on one, then find a place where you’re well positioned for everything you like. Mrs PH and I stayed where we now live for a year previously, so we knew it ticked pretty much all our boxes but most importantly, we got to know the area and what it would be like to live here. I’ve seen/heard many who move somewhere new straight after retirement and they didn’t know what they were moving into at a time of transition from work to retirement - so think carefully;
2. Three years will fly by, so start looking and planning now because good retirement is a job in itself; and
3. As a friend once said to me, when you’re ready to go, don’t delay!
Thus far, one year in, thankfully no regrets. But it does have its unforeseen hurdles though. |  |

I do love a bit of water, but a nice bit of river or estuary are enough for me. Absolutely love my daily harbourside walks in Bristol.
I can’t ever imagine living away from a city/decent sized town, but reckon if I had to, then ideally I might go market town with buses down to coast, and trains/buses to a decent sized town/city with a major hospital, good leisure options etc. |  |

Over the last few months been meeting up with a cousin who lives in the South Downs national park in Hampshire. Been having a good tour of village pubs for lunch and she is only around 10 miles from the coast. Scenery is spectacular. Best of both worlds I reckon. I love the sea, especially when rough, it’s never the same twice. | |

I was moved to the IOM when I was 13/14, left as soon as I could, lived in various towns and cities in England, been back on the island for quite some time. There's an opportunity cost living here, in terms of football, gigs, culture etc, but I like it these days, in a small town by the sea, it's easy, peaceful, safe , I can see the mountain from my window and am 5 minutes from the sea, 3 minutes away within the next 5 years! I would say, wherever you move to, get involved in the local community. I didn't, relying on trips to qpr for my friendship group, and isolated myself to a degree. | | | |

When we moved up here 19 years ago,we moved to a smallish village of around 600 people and it had a pub and village post office,both of which have closed down.Our nearest pub is 2 1/2 miles away,which entails a walk through country lanes,fine on a summer evening,but not good during darker nights.
If you move to the coast,you are more likely to have more facilities than living in the country.Also check out the transport links if you move to the countryside as rural buses are becoming scarcer if you have to rely on them in later life.I don’t regret moving up here,but our house has done its job,and seen our kids grow up,but I think it’s time to move to a larger town,but my Mrs wants another village location.As the song goes,”There may be trouble ahead.”

Me and Mrs Camberley with my youngest stepson and our grandson now five, who we are special guardians for, relocated from Farnborough just over a year ago to a beautiful village in Somerset called Milborne Port right on the Somerset/Dorset border.
We are surrounded by beautiful, rolling countryside and farmland and the village has all the amenities needed including a couple of lovely pubs but only a twenty minute drive from Yeovil for shopping.
The very pretty market town of Sherborne is only ten minutes away and the coast at Weymouth only thirty miles/forty five minutes away.
We haven't regretted it for a second. [Post edited 19 Jul 2022 22:18]

I would only suggest and depending on what you do for a living don't move whilst you are still working.
I was in a high pressure job prior to retiring and no way would I have been able to combine the two, my Company were pretty good to me they knew I wanted out PDQ so gave me a new three day working week keeping all my benifits but a few Months later I knocked it on the head and threw meself into getting me and the Mrs moved.
It was still hard work and bloody stressful beyond belief but we've been moved almost three years now and It's fantastic without exaggeration.
I'd also suggest If possible buy new like we did.
Start looking now to get the feel for It.

Well, I love where I live in Hampshire. I can get to LR in 90 mins or less, New Forest in 15 mins, Seaside in 30-40 mins and easy access to wonderful countryside and rivers. I'm a keen angler and wildlife photographer so I've really got all I want including a nice garden in a quiet semi rural suburb twixt Winchester and Southampton. |  | | |
