Greek Islands 16:36 - Jan 4 with 10691 views | BrianMcCarthy | Apologies for this, but I'm really terrible at searching for old threads. Looking at bringing my parents away later this year, and I remembered that one of you lovely people recommended a particular Greek Island to me some time back. I thought I'd bookmarked the thread but can't find that either. I'm really very bright, bless me. Any tips from the LFW illuminati would be great, thanks.

Greek Islands on 16:14 - Jun 13 by BrianMcCarthy | Booked. Finally! Santorini won out. Wasn't my first choice, or the choice of most on here, but my parents researched it and picked it and I'm still happy. It looks amazing, some nice hiking, boat trips and food. How bad! |
If you go there, you do realise that you are advocating for volcanic eruptions and the devestation of what was there previously? We went through all this with Morocco, Brian. #ethicaltourist

Greek Islands on 12:10 - Jan 7 by Mick_S | I like the look of Paxos - close to mainland Greece and Parga; somewhere I’ve always fancied. Also close to Corfu Town which is a must if you are close - beautiful place! Having said that, we were stupid tourists at lunchtime and forgot to do a bit of research and ended up having the second worst meal I’ve ever had. |
I was in Parga over Easter and is delightful, although I get the sense that it would become extremely crowded during the summer and therefore the great restaurants would serve up some indifferent fare. Some real gems on mainland Greece and it seems flying to Preveza is reasonably cheap (Preveza itself is a decent town for a couple of nights with some lovely restaurants). You can also drive across to Lefkada, Lefkas town being a lovely spot and also recommend Ioanina inland which is a university town and on a beautiful lake which has some truly incredible restaurants.

My Girlfriend is from Greece (Athens) and talks about taking me to Santorini one day. Amazing place according to her. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Greek Islands on 17:34 - Oct 23 with 869 views | BrianMcCarthy | Just a note to say thanks to all of you. Got back on Wednesday and had a great trip. Santorini is gorgeous. The island itself, being volcanic, is not the easiest on the eye but the sunset views from the Caldera are astonishing and the mountaintop villages are a treat. Got in a few nice hikes as well. Ancient Thera is amazing if you're into archaeology and history. I would say that a few days is enough and that even in October it was thronged with camera-weilding bus-tourists so it was, as I feared, fairly soulless. I'm not sure that my parents picked the ideal place from their point of view, as they're very sociable and like the Godawful Irish Bars. None of them in Oia! The main thing, though, is that we spent ten chilled days together with nice views, great food and a few drinks. So, a huge success. Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.

Greek Islands on 18:15 - Oct 23 with 780 views | BrianMcCarthy | P.S. Forgot to mention the locals and the many we met who had migrated from the mainland and other islands. Incredibly friendly, soft, funny, humble and modest. Many were sad about the big tourist sell-out which was sad to listen to. Overall, though, a lovely people. Great names too!
