Apologies for this, but I'm really terrible at searching for old threads.

Looking at bringing my parents away later this year, and I remembered that one of you lovely people recommended a particular Greek Island to me some time back.

I thought I'd bookmarked the thread but can't find that either.

I'm really very bright, bless me.

Any tips from the LFW illuminati would be great, thanks.

My favourite is Paros, Naousa Town is fantastic. Been there loads of times. Its slightly more awkward to get to as no direct flights from UK.
Stay a couple of nights in Athens then get the internal flight if you don't fancy ferries.

You can't beat Greek Island hopping!

True, absolutely love greek island hopping. Alas a lot of the ferries are now 'inside only' speedy vessels. Nothing nicer than being out on deck with a Fix or Mythos in hand on your way to the next island.

Try looking up Paxos and Antipaxos. Both are beautiful. I didn’t like Corfu but loved both of these islands.

Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

Paxos looks amazing! Thanks Northolt. Will look into that more.

One island I wouldn't necessarily recommend is Andros. We were there in March about 4 years ago. I tripped getting off the ferry and smashed my face into a metal bar, walked along the beach in the dark with a bag of ice on one eye looking for the airbnb. Nearly got charged by cows. Map was wrong so wandered around a half finished villa for 20 mins looking for a key box. No heating in the place we were in when we finally found it and highly inadequate sheets. Weather was terrible - locals in giant coats shivering in the plastic covered porches of deserted restaurants. The milk froze in the fridge. I remember nothing of the island itself. Other than that not bad.

I like the look of Paxos - close to mainland Greece and Parga; somewhere I’ve always fancied. Also close to Corfu Town which is a must if you are close - beautiful place!
Having said that, we were stupid tourists at lunchtime and forgot to do a bit of research and ended up having the second worst meal I’ve ever had.

Western Crete. Perfect.

Can tie in with some Cycladic island hopping if you have time.

Sorry, were the cows trying to charge you for the air bnb?

FFS. I'm prepared to turn the udder cheek this once.

Edit - Actually, I'm calling bull on Brooklyn's storey. I don't know about in Greece, but over here the cow's go about in gangs, or 'herds' as they euphemistically call them, and they don't 'nearly charge' you - if they want it, they're taking it and there's nothing you're doing about it.

I was following an apparently unreliable map with limited cellullar-data connection.

The route through the field of cows turned out to be unreliable, invasive even, and the cows were getting edgy. I barely touched them.

Kythera.

But the real secret is that the mainland is better than the islands...

I wouldn't agree with your assessment of Andros, but can totally understand why you're opinion has been formed after that run of bad luck!

Managed to head out there in September 2020 for a week and was delightful. Andros town is beautiful and there are some amazing beaches and terrific restaurants around, so I would recommend it, but would absolutely hire a car if you're tempted.

Thassos is another beautiful island and if you combine with a city break to Thessaloniki, well worth the hour and a half mainland drive to catch the ferry.

Chios is another island which I remember being amazing, along with Hydra, which is an idyllic motor free island, however is within close commutable distance to Athens, so does get busy in the summer

Yeah even I have no faith in my view of the place. We must have gone there for a reason I'm sure.

We loved Thassos apart from the wasps - fantastic beaches and very laid back. Our only time there was around 30 years ago so I wonder how it’s changed? Generally speaking, the islands that don’t have airports stay a bit more “real.”

Another vote for Paxos, great island and you can rent your own boat to get around. No direct flights so you need to get boat from Corfu.

We also went to Halkidiki last year which is mainland Greece. Some stunning coastlines and short transfers from airport.

Booked. Finally!

Santorini won out. Wasn't my first choice, or the choice of most on here, but my parents researched it and picked it and I'm still happy. It looks amazing, some nice hiking, boat trips and food. How bad!

Looking forward to it, Mick.

Travel books ordered from the local bookshop. Need to research the hiking next. Then some nice places to eat and drink - the parents are well into both!

We've stopped at the 5-star Sani Beach resort 3 times, Its a wee bit expensive but a fabulous and quiet place to stay, food is superb as is the private beach, but the coast line walks are just bliss.
Free yacht trip every night for hotel guests to go out in the bay and watch the sunset, free champagne-wine or whatever your tipple is and free nibbles.
Only downside is Thessaloniki airport It's unorganised bloody chaos or was, we havent been back for a about 3-4 Years.

Doing my 6th visit to Rhodes this year, stay at the same family run hotel, has a huge pool, not near the beach though, a few decent tavernas and restaurants in the nearby village of pastida.
Hire a car and explore , can do the whole island in a day, get on the main road to lindos and there a huge variety of beaches and coves, faliraki is still busy but not the party town it used to be thanks to a huge clampdown.

Rhodes is great did Pefkos about 4 years ago ,beautiful place

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Ted we did a week at IKOS Olivia and it was amazing. Food and drinks were top quality and it was a really unforgettable stay. The previous week we were in a lovely Air BnB and did lots of exploring, it was lovely splitting the holiday this way. Really appreciated kicking back with the All Inclusive resort and can highly recommend IKOS Resorts. Seems expensive, but when you factor in the high quality service it balances out.

Your brother and I reckon Lords is better.

The truth is I'd find it easier to say where one would not recommend going.

I've been looking at a few of them myself, Kefalonia looks like a good call, and it's unlikely that I'll even try to get a game in.

After the last couple of years, having an ordinary time is on the agenda.
