Some comments from Oxford United's home page re Rob Dickie.
Dickie, outstanding on the night, made one superb early tackle and also blocked a second attempt from the hard woirking Sam Winnall that floated just over the bar, with another ex-U’s player Jordan Archer beaten. Alex Gorrin dragged a 16th minute drive wide and United had matched their higher league opponents for the first 15 minutes, but then the Hoops started to get on top.
Simon Eastwood got down well to deny Chris Willock at his near post then made a magnificent save to deny Chair from close range soon after. However, it would have taken Eastwood with Jack Stevens on his shoulders to stop Dickie’s opener when he chested the ball down in the centre circle, played a one-two, rampaged forward from his own half and drove an unstoppable shot into the top left corner for a superb goal. Credit to Dickie who refused to celebrate in front of the away fans (I would still be doing laps of Loftus Road now).
Eastwood made another good save from Chair as United held on to try and get to half time, although an outstretched boot from Winnall lifted a Seddon free kick onto the top of the bar to underline the fact that the U’s weren’t out of it at a goal down.
Sadly, with five minutes to half time the task became a whole lot harder when Chair got Loftus Road rocking. This time it came from the left wing and Chair’s well struck shot took a wicked deflection off stand-in right back Leon Chambers-Parillon to wrong-foot Eastwood and give the R’s a 2-0 half-time advantage. |  |

Thought that was class that not only did Warburton sub Dickie so he could get applause from both QPR and Oxford, but that he also replaced him with Gubbins who I believe is an Oxford fan.

Couldn't agree more, but I wouldn't swap any of our players for anyone, irrespective of talent.
This feels like our team, made up of our players. I bet all of them would say this is either the best team they've played in or at least the most fun they've had. That sense of belonging is hugely important to me and I think it is for the club too.
We can win things but we are never going to be the next Man City; but we can be us and proud of it. |  | | |

Not to warp a positive into a criticism - and who knows what they look like in training - but Dickie is hitting them so clean it seems a bit odd to keep indulging Barbs on free kick duty at this point.

Did'nt realise until watched the replay he took that out of the sky from the goalkeepers kick, chested, played a give and go, and used both feet going forward before launching, that was some goal!
Value wise, without going overboard, similar player to Ajer, who Celtic just sold to Brentford for an initial £13.5m rising to £ 18m apparently.
Ajer is a ball-playing centre half who lacks top level pace but if he's worth that money, can't see Dickie not moving into that range, especially with his ability to step up, break the line, and contribute goals from long range and set pieces. | | | |

Ajer not absolutely rapid IIRC but I'm pretty sure still easily beats Dickie for pace. That's really the only thing that's been holding the scouts back, and in fairness it's certainly not unimportant, especially so when stepping up a level.
In fancy progressive aspects they're otherwise evenly matched I'd say - in every other Actual Defending aspect of the position Dickie absolutely trounces him IMO and that's not the bias talking. | | | |

Yes. Interesting listening to Kevin Gallen on the West London Sport vlog. He was basically saying that's our problem with beating the high press. A team like Barnsley can bring up their central defenders, knowing we haven't got anyone with the lightning speed to outrun them getting back into position. Or else they just take them out, like they did with Jojo, or pull them back like they did with Willock. But someone with really blistering pace might be even harder for them to do that with as the defender might end up as the last man. [Post edited 25 Aug 2021 12:53]

Yes agree, although Dickie definitely looks leaner this season and seems to have picked up a yard of pace, his all-round improvement with our coaching team has been very impressive. | | | |

Just watched his Interview and he said the Oxford keeper is one of his best friends and he felt bad to beat him with that lazer so that is probably why he was low key .Of course he also said he knew it was in from the moment he struck it  |  | | |
