Council chief's message to Poulton firms as restaurants close suddenly

Restaurants and bars in Poulton and across Wyre are "not being ordered to close" due to a rise in coronavirus cases, a senior councillor said.

Restaurants and bars in Poulton and across Wyre are "not being ordered to close" due to a rise in coronavirus cases, a senior councillor said.

Coun David Henderson, the leader of the local authority, moved to reassure both residents and business owners following the sudden closure of five Poulton venues yesterday.

The Tipsy Cow, The Alley, Rumba Bar, Boca Cafe and Bar, and Cinco's Mexican Restaurants said in a statement they would shut, citing a "rise of positive Covid-19 cases in the area"

They did not specify how long they intended to be closed for in their statements.

Each one has been approached for more information amid mounting speculation online.

There were 16 new coronavirus cases recorded in the borough last week, up from five the week before.

Coun Henderson said: "As far as Wyre Council is concerned, restaurants and bars observing social distancing can remain open."

A number of firms were worried they would be ordered to close, having suffered through months of national lockdown measures already, The Gazette understands.

A colleague who was on holiday in Spain said they very strictly observe social distancing measures over there.

Their supposed second wave has been severe but is apparently already under control.

I'd say the second wave in the UK is only just beginning and is possibly at its peak in France.

We'll see.

It is odd that they're closing voluntarily.

Maybe their turnover is down so much that it makes more financial sense to close down completely until trade improves.

Business owners are crying out for restrictions to be relaxed. I find it difficult to believe that a business shuts down (albeit temporarily) of its own accord for the general well-being of others.

It's like some people want to go bust. We went for a meal last night and the waiter started backing off when my missus said she worked at the Vic. Not a pleasant dining experience. Pathetic.

Medical and sciencey advisors over here are saying the government will be forced into making some "big" decisions in the next 7 to 10 days.
