Frustrating we seemingly didn't learn anything from the first game. I guess, in BBM's defence, if he is trying to instill a passing, possession based brand of football it's difficult to switch it up for one game.
While our 2 centre backs pulled out wide when the inevitable fook up happens like last night several times your 2 defenders you need to protect the goal are stood nearer the corner flag, Newcastle put 4 players to press yet nobody picked up on it and we still carried on doing it, at what other time would you let your defence be outnumbered by the opposition attacking, whilst casually passing it around. Youd struggle playing that idea out with premier league level players

Would have taken a reply and a 5-2 aggregate all day long when the draw was made, and still have the same view. After a long cup football famine we have been feasting for several years. Hope the special feeling from big cup games never starts being taking for granted. As for the rest of this month if we could get a win at Mk the gap between us would be reassuring. The stats suggest they were all over Burton last night, so a tough one there. Wycombe and Gillingham I think a couple of draws would just break up the pattern of loosing a few on the trot that has been a feature so far this season. Going to Wycombe and despite last night I am looking forward to it. UTD

It would have been 1.1 if we had not gifted 3 first half goals in 10 minutes. Nonetheless, it was what it was. Thought we looked like startled rabbits in the headlights for the first half. But I am beginning to enjoy our cup forays over the past couple of years. Well done to all and looking forward to next year. Maybe we could get to the Emptyhad.

I’m all for the passing game - but it befuddles me that teams (well certainly our team) don’t have the collective nous to change it up either collectively or individually to either keep the other team a bit on the back foot.
Newcastle last night could press as high as they liked as Dale continually tried to play it out from the back. There was one goal kick where our two CH’s had dropped behind the keeper (to give themselves as much time from the pressing Newcastle strikers.
In the first half it became almost comical in front of us.
I don’t want long ball, but it was like continually battering your head against a brick wall last night (first half)

Another difference second half was down to Lynch not thinking he's a premier league footballer (outfield)
Don't think he was acting on instructions either, just being sensible in clearing his lines. However good Sanchez might be in other respects, I'd like to see Lynch given the chance now to claim a longer term no.1 spot at Dale (although I guess the terms of Sanchez' loan won't help)
Its ok trying to play a passing game whilst developing play in a patient manner, but not from your own six yard box, on what will be increasingly uneven surfaces

Totally agree. In an ideal world we would play like City ,Liverpool or any other quality team by playing out from the back and keeping possession . However it strikes me that our players don't want the ball in this situation, treating it a bit like a parcel at a kids "pass the parcel "game feeling a sense of relief if they can pass it on to someone else to be the one to make the mistake and perhaps cost us

Not sure if it's because we managed to take United to penalties and managed a draw at home against Newcastle - but there genuinely seems to be some sort of expectation, rather than blind hope, from some on here, that we could've got something last night. At St James' Park.
We tried to play our football, it didn't work. We played a much better team and they took advantage of our individual errors when they didn't in the first game. That's the FA Cup and that's why they're a Premier League outfit and we're a League One outfit. But as others have pointed out, that excellent 45 minutes in the home game gave us the opportunity to see Dale at SJP - so let's be grateful for that rather than too critical of a team that have lost against a team from two divisions above.
A great experience for the players and fans and you can bank on BBM having learned plenty from the experience of going up against Premier League opponents on three occasions this season. Think some forget this is still his first full season in management.

I have no issues with us trying to play our game but without the ball were pish. Far too much respect shown, no closing down, an absolute carbon copy of the first half at Spotland. Newcastle are shite but we made em look like a great team - we showed in the second half at ours that they are there for the taking.
Not sure I can criticise the players though as I believe they were probably doing what they were told. The scoreline was largely irrelevant and only the most starry eyed fans thought we could truly pull off an upset.
I just wanted us to have a real go and we didn't. Not at all. As soon as we stood off them there was an air of predictability about the way the game would pan out. Of course, the replay is all money to the cause. But is that all we're arsed about nowadays? As I say, I don't really wanna criticise the players or even BBM to be fair, as he's a young manager plying his trade. But the first half was a truly painful watch. And it isn't often I say that

It was a truly painful watch - away from home against a Premier League side playing a strong XI, which is probably what we should expect truth be told. They might be a 'shite' Premier League side, but they play two divisions above us for a reason.
I dunno about other fans, but the reason I always want an away draw against a big Premier League side in the FA Cup is little to do with 'money to the cause' but more about the fact that we as fans get to see Dale play at a famous stadium and have an enjoyable day out. For me, that's what we got yesterday regardless of the performance and result, and it made it even sweeter that we had earned it by putting in such a great performance in the second half of the home fixture. That's why I think some of the criticism is a little OTT given the circumstances.
Tangled up in blue.

The day out itself was of course pretty enjoyable but whichever way you look at it, that first half was putrid.
It isn't even about quality (I don't believe they have that much anyway tbh). They just seemed to want it more than us. And that's disappointing. I was hopeful that we would come out with the same kind of intensity that earned us a draw in the second half at our gaff. In the end, it was a carbon copy of the first, except they took their chances (that we gifted em tbh).
And judging by the reaction of the fans there (though I do concede some were OTT at the game), I'm not alone in my disappointment. But hey ho. As long as we survive I'm not arsed

Rathbone was a big reason we started that 2nd half much better - he really started to take on the Newcastle players and he was superb - he was always going to be a big miss last night.

We beat ourselves last night rather than them beating us with their quality. The latter I expected but the former is always a tougher pill to swallow no matter who the opposition.
Why they changed the goal kick law has me baffled, but it’s obviously got Dale’s defence completely bamboozled as well. For the life of me I can’t understand why Sanchez just doesn’t boot the ball upfield where it’s fifty fifty who gets it. Fannying around like we’ve been doing is suicide especially when half the defenders don’t know what the hell’s going on. So what if the opposition get the ball,it still gives the defence time to regroup and they’re facing the ball as it’s coming towards them. It ain’t rocket science.

Just a thought but maybe he doesn't just boot it upfield because his manager doesn't want him to.

Matheson's goal v Bolton started with a short goal kick to O'Connell.

Ok so we score one,how many have we conceded this season that’s ultimately gone on to cost us the game? We ain’t PSG or Bayern Munich with players who can make summat from nowt. We all know the goalie’s distribution isn’t exactly his best attribute,so just get rid and that goes for a couple of his defenders too. No wonder our goals against are just about akin to an extra lost point mainly through poor defending. Welly it away and worry about fancy tippy tappy at the back when we’re well clear of the bottom.

I thought that we were told that one of Sanchez's attributes when he was signed was his distribution and that this had been a factor in his recruitment? We needed a keeper with better ball skills than Lillis? I suspect that this is the case and that he was brought to Spotland specifically so that we could play this short stuff from the back.

Call me old fashioned but I'd rather have a goal keeper who can actually stop the ball going in the net than do a step over and knock an 80 yard worldy every now and then

Must admit I got the opposite impression …… seem to remember one of the knocks on him was he had been blessed with a "touch of the Grobbelaars". For me, he's saved us (literally) more often than put us in a hole, but if he's going back at the end of the season, I wouldn't mind Lynch getting more playing time either, as previously suggested.

If we just punt it up field the ball doesn't stick and just comes back at us. We don't have anyone apart from Calvin that can bring it down with his head and win aerial duels.
For his size Wilbraham wins next to nothing in the air and is much more effective when the ball is played into him and he can hold it up with his feet. Much like the 2nd half in the home tie.

Yep, I’ve no problem playing out from the back, sometimes a big hoof is needed, but with no outlet it invariably means the ball coming straight back. It’s the play out to the full back, back to the keeper , then move up 10 yards, play it across the back line, then back to keeper who then kicks long!

Isn't the passing it about before the keeper kicks it long about drawing the opposition players out of position? The problem is the lack of pace to capitalise on those 'long balls'

Not really as its only drawing their forwards onto us,doesn't really influence their back line for the inevitable hoof it when we run out of options to pass it anyway
