Noticed Gubbins who came on at the end of the game yesterday was a few months younger than my daughter. He is just over 18 years old is it our youngest debut in a while?

Ian Holloway was in charge when he was born.

Joe Gubbins. Sounds like a character in a Dickens novel.

I was thinking similar thoughts the other day. There are Sheffield Wednesday fans in their 20s who've never seen their team in the top flight.

my mate Joe: “What’s the team?
Me: “Strongish, but gubbins on the bench”
Joe: ”I know, not much strength in depth these days”
Me: “no, Joe Gubbins”
Joe: “surely we’ve got someone who can make up the numbers”

We've got fans in their 20s who wish they hadn't.

See them like that regularly here in Cyprus. Usually carrying machine guns!

Reminds me of many years ago coming back from Tel Aviv and was questioned for my reasons being there from the most stunningly attractive women in military uniform. I attempted some gentle flirting which did not go well. Got searched and rushed through security though fortunately not having the indignity of a full cavity search.

I think Liverpool had at least three playing yesterday that were born in this century.

That is the oldest I've felt since Rangers started playing Phil Nutt & Tony Tagg etc, players that were younger than me!

A mate was flying back from JFK to Ireland years ago and was stopped by sceuity at JFK, interviewed, detained for a good while. When he was eventually cleared he asked why he had been stopped.

"Because you were reading a magazine about guns and ammo, Sir"
"Your Country has 300 million guns, and I read about them and I'm the threat to security?"

Yup. Went for my US Visa interview a few years back and one of the questions was whether I'd ever been involved in trafficking people against their will. I said I'd persuaded eight people to go watch QPR away at Blackburn.

Nothing.

Nothing.

Putney cops aint got a sense of humor either, many moons ago was stopped in the High St with a couple of mates and was asked 'what have you dropped tonight then'

Me being a smart arse started looking all over the pavement and with a smirk on me gob replied 'I couldn't find buggar all'

A long wait in the cells followed by a full strip search with rubber gloves and a torch soon put paid to me ever wanting to be 'funny man' again.

True!

I had my own experience with them. I was on my way to a free journo junket skiing in New Hampshire a few years ago. I was stopped by US Customs in Dublin Airport (on Irish soil - an utter nonsense). They held out a fingerprint scanner for me.

"Please place your thumb here, Sir"
"Hmmm, I don't think I will, sorry"
"We need your fingerprints, Sir"
"Well, you don't. You'd like them, but you don't need them"
"You will not get into the U.S. unless you provide fingerprints"
"Ok"
"Please understand, Sir...."
"I do understand"

So they sent for a supervisor, who asked me to step into a room. I refused politely and told them that we could talk where we were. They explained again that I wouldn't get into the U.S. without providing fingerprints. I explained again that I understood that. My friends asked what I was doing. I said I was thinking about going surfing in Clare. The supervisor again asked me for fingerprints. I said again that I had done nothing wrong and was raised in a time and culture that viewed a demand for fingerprints as an accusation. They asked me to wait five minutes. I did. they told me I was free to fly.

No fingerprints.

I loved New Hampshire.

You’re my hero. I can’t believe how easily most people just hand over their identity information. Haven’t they read Orwell’s “1984”?

Already told my wife that my red line is someone wanting to put a chip into me. They can lock me up or shoot me - ain’t gonna do it.

You know you feel old when.... you speak to a new work colleague and they ask how long you have worked for the company? When I say 30 years you get told 'that was 5 years before I was born!'

My mum was flying to London from Shannon just after 9/11. Schedules were a mess, last minute cancellations and no-one really sure what "enhanced" security checks were, other than more of them done slowly.

My mum snapped when asked what she was taking on the plane "A book ok. I assume I'm allowed a bloody book?"

"Sure as long as it's not the Quran you'll be grand" said the Gard.

I used to regularly fly through Amsterdam (the airport, not the City) and the security there was a joy.

Tall, blonde security agents who were friendly, cool and funny. I wanted to take them all home and read poetry to them, but they were male and I don't own any poetry.

The female agents were even cooler again.

My mate was interviewing for a role managing a pub and it was clear the job was his if he wanted it.

Area Manager: So, do you have any questions?
My mate asks a few questions and then asks, is there a dress code?
Area Manager: You can wear what you want
My mate: Can I wear a wizard's outfit?
Area Manager: Er, no. It's more start casual. Shirts and jeans - that sort of thing

Always best to avoid cracking gags in interviews/client meetings/US immigration halls.

UK border control probably less risky but just as humourless.

Coming back from Poland on January 2nd some dozen or so years ago at Gatwick Airport once I picked up my bag from the carousel before I even had a chance to go though the door I was asked to 'come this way'.
Taken into a room with two people and asked to open my bag. I obliged and asked what they were looking for. "Tobacco, alcohol etc".

I asked why I was singled out.

"This time of year it's mainly couples we see travelling"

"So it's suspicious to be single over Christmas and New Year?" I asked.

Met with a stern look.

"I'm not trying to be funny but that's ridiculous. What if you had a couple smuggling stuff in or people pretending to be a couple? Do they just waltz through because being a couple this time of year is deemed normal?"

More stern looks and then they let me go.

I wouldn't do that in the US though.
