So it's (early) Friday, and I'm still up after a tough Thursday (rough month if I'm honest) reminiscing the times back in .ca - couple beers later got me trolling youtube for the tunes that feel like home (today's theme), so here's a few

The Irish Canadians in England (go figure)

The usual Hip tunes

I could go on with the Hip
Couple WMM - feeling like my old self, back when I was in my element

Blue Meanies

And of course, there's Rush....

and I could post more, but that's enough for now.

Choons that feel like home? How long have we got? I'll pick just three. I could pick hundreds.

Well, when I was in England in the 80's and 90's I used to have a playlist of Irish stuff to laugh and cry to. Most of it was high in emotion but low in musical quality and hasn't stayed with me, but the following choons fit the bill in every way - homesickness, nostalgia, pride and sheer quality.

First up is a tune that may be Irish, Scottish or English but this version is the closest that Youtube has to the definitive one and contains some of the the best trad guitar I've ever heard as well as a fine vocal performance from Brady. Great story, too. Used to watch Brady in The Mean Fiddler, loved him. Sh1te haircut, though.

Trad mayhem! Superb musicians and my favourite trad band. They were normally reserved but this was recorded in London in front of a crowd at the BBC and the crowd going mad as the music builds up is freakily funny (it was like little old us were taking over the BBC!). The transition from the jig to the first reel (1.29) gets me every time.

Rory was from Cork (well, Donegal people disagree, but..) and late night around the kitchen table in Kingsbury or Kenton was soundtracked by him as often as not. The guitar genius is one thing, but the chorus on this one made it special, even for Rory. In those pre-Celtic Tiger times, there was no hint of homeward migration, and I had yet to fall in love with London. Home was Cork, and we were all a million miles away.

A little something that reminds me of home, specifically my last night living in England

And a large something to remind me of Canada. I've never been (although its very high on the list) so it doesn't remind me of Canada but any excuse anyway

Oops, missed the 'home' theme.

Great choice. If I were to do a playlist of songs that make me miss London that and English Rose would be on it immediately.

Canada eh?

Canadian:

Man that one gallops along, I need a lie down.

Not Canadian:

When I was living overseas (Austria and France) in the 80s, "West End girls" by The Pet Shop Boys always reminded me of home, strangely, although I lived in a soulless "crap town" in Buckinghamshire.

RUSH, my musical equivalent of Rangers winning the FA Cup would be witnessing the Toronto musical magicians headline the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday at Glastonbury with my choice of setlist, 'Xanadu' live, uninterrupted on BBC1 at midnight. Just to see the public's reaction.
'Oh, this lot aren't bad are they?'
'The drummer's pretty good isn't he?'
'Kanye West must have influenced them, they're miming?'
Etc
