I work with a lad who's best mate plays for a championship club (not us).

He's played a few games for them but has been loaned out to a mid table Scottish premier league side where he's not even making the match day squad atm.

He is earning £8000 per week. £8000 ffs!

Football is gonna eat itself

Had a mate who played for part-time for a Conference North team who'd been taken over by an internet casino fella who had aspirations of taking them into the Football League. Trained Monday nights and THursday nights, played Saturdays and Tuesdays, they had him on 45k a year

The one that always gets me is the Sheff Utd 21 year old who killed that fella on the M1. No first team appearances for Sheff Utd, couple of loan spells at Torquay and the likes, flying around in a Mercedes CLC 180.

The whole rotton pear of a sh*t needs to get it's f*cking fat over inflated ugly house in order.

I bet the trainees don't even have to clean boots anymore. Modern football is really sh*t isn't it?

It's time people started cancelling their TV subscriptions. That is the only way to make this industry wake up to itself.

Trainees wash boots....not a chance.

Sweep the terraces......not a chance.

Have agents and drive cars we can only dream only to be bombed out of the club....more than likely.

Clubs are as responsible as the players.

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

A girl I used to work with many years ago Dad passed away when she was only 12 or 13.
He left her some money, not much but enough to know that even at 16 or 18 it would get wasted. So, it was written that she wouldn't get it until she was 25.

At 25, after going through years of teen angst, partying, lots of alcohol etc she calmed down and grew up. Used the money to put a deposit on flat (we're talking mid-late 90's). That would never have happened had she got the money at 18 or even 21.
She admitted she was angry at the time for not getting the money sooner but admitted she would have just wasted it and so glad her Dad did what he did.

Alex Ferguson at Man Utd wouldn't allow any youth team player, even if they could afford it, a car bigger than a 2 litre engine.

Ray Jones, as tragic as it was, should never have been in the position to be driving a powerful car just weeks after he passed his test.

I think footballers of all ages are being paid way too much but if thats the way it is then the young players should have trustees and they should only be allowed a moderate monthly amount (still good by our standards) until they turn 25.

I notice a lot of the players have flourescent pink boots. Presumably they can't be scrubbed by inexperienced youths with dirty old boot brushes. They probably have to be sent off to a bespoke flourescent pink boot cleaning service.

Clean? They just buy a new pair..... or are probably given them a part of some lucrative sponsorship deal.

Whichever it is, it's put paid to the whole 'boot washing' model of player development.

IIRC David Beckham was one of the first players to insist on having a new pair of boots for each game. Ridiculous.

Footballers and their agents must be the most obscenely overpaid profession of all. I have to laugh when I walk past the players car park and see the sort of cars they are driving, which is a good indication of their income and lifestyle. The vast majority of them are mediocre players at best, hardly at the top of their profession yet are driving around in vehicles that would indicate they are fantastically successful. When you consider that Patrick Agyemang, a player barely above Conference standard, used to tool around in a Bentley you realise how ludicrously overpaid they are.

The Agyemang Bentley cruising down SAR represents the new QPR better than almost anything else. P AGYE plate.

Came in looking for two years with an option at 6k a week, walked out with 4 years at 12. Couldn't trap a bag of cement tethered to a steel post.

2 years ago, Rangers were going to send the mad Malian, Diakite, to Watford on loan. They balked at paying his £10K per week wages. He was probably one of the lowest paid members of the first team squad.
Now, he's played a handful of games in Saudi and, even, the EDS players accept he cannot play the game to an acceptable level.

Get your point, Juzzie, and agree with it.

But for clarity's sake, I'm pretty sure Ray Jones was driving a VW Golf when he died. I'd guess it was brand new and a GTI, but it wasn't like he was in a Ferrari or something. I'm sure it was a hot hatch. And I don't think he was on big money at all. He used to get the tube to the ground before games.

Your point is right, but he's not an example at all of it.

Still about 20k's worth of faster than average motor there mate. Not the sort of car I'd want my son running around in weeks after passing his test. The insurance alone must have been astronomical. He was far better paid then the average teenager so I reckon it did contribute to his death and the deaths of his friends he was driving around IMO. Very sad.

I remember Michael Owen was sent a spanking new free Jag when he passed his test at 18. Ridiculous.

Nothing like £20k at the time if his death. Surely? It was how long ago now? 8-9 odd years? And my point was there are lots if youngsters in Golf GTIs; it's a car loads of youngsters want and save up for and get 2nd hand...and they're not all footballers, hence the example not being quite fair.

But, yes, agree they're still motors with too much power for a newly passed driver.

There are far better examples of young players with more money than sense than Ray Jones. He was pretty grounded.

I saw a doc on Beckham and it said he had over 40 pairs of boots across a season. Changed every 2 weeks.
In his defence though, he did wear them every day for 7 days, for 8 hours a day including training.
Didnt pay a penny for them and were custom made.
