What am I basing it on? His entire political career before last summer.

Like I said, him not being a fan of the EU doesn't necessarily correlate directly with a 'hard Brexit' though.

What, do you mean those other important issues that may affect their lives over the next five years?! How very dare they!

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying they shouldn't have. But that's where May's strategy was flawed. She wanted it to be solely about Brexit. If you look at Ashcroft's Polls analysis of the result, for Labour voters Brexit was their third priority whereas for Tory voters it was first.

She cocked up with a sh!t manifesto that had a suicidal social care bill, an intent to remove the foxhunting ban and refused to debate against the other candidates.

She was sitting on huge gains and completely lost it, as evidenced by her advisors quitting today.

And some people still want her in change of the most important negotiations this country has faced in a,lifetime.

Can't argue with any part of your post ploppy. Brexit didn't even cross my mind on Thursday. FIrst time I've voted in a GE since 2005 I think. Still feel dirty.

Disagree. That's what 'they' want you to think. Individually we're powerful, collectively we're unstoppable. You watched The Wizard of Oz? The bit when the curtain is pulled back, revealing the 'wizard' perpetuating the illusion? A more fitting metaphor for our society I'm yet to come across.

How very arrogant.

We are carrying out the wishes of a Party that is virtually extinct.
No - we are carrying out the will of the people.
[Post edited 10 Jun 2017 20:41]

How very naive.
The will of the people is through a general election. If you wanted out you should have voted UKIP with Farage as PM.
The will of the people cannot be defined by a joke of a referendum that was simplistic in the extreme for a very complicated matter. It only came about because Dodgy Dave was trying to keep his Party together. The MPs went along with it because no one thought we would vote out and no Party wanted to be seen to be not giving Joe Public a vote. The Cons had Clegg in tow to keep them afloat as well to get a majority regardless. This against the view of nearly every MP, nearly every financial adviser, and almost every world leader - Putin excepted.
No one knew exactly what they were voting for.....and we still don't.
IMHO there should never be another one. Had Farage been PM there would have been no complaints from me apart from complete and utter despair for the Country.

I wonder if the remainers would be calling it a "joke of a referendum that was simplistic in the extreme for a very complicated matter" if they'd won. Somehow I doubt it.

Alot of people voted 'Remain' in the thought Britain would be safer from less immigration.

Now it is clear many terrorists live here already and the uk government ignore warnings fron said terrorists friends, family and neighbours.

That's even more arrogant.

The EU referendum question was quite simple. Do you want to the UK to leave the EU?

People knew exactly what they were voting for - leaving the EU. That's it. Simple as that. You can argue about single markets, immigration, ECJ, Human Rights, Workers' Rights, etc. but the question was simple.

Complete strawman.

It was a stupid referendum to hold irrespective of the result. It was only done for party political purposes.

There was no great desire from the people to leave the EU, if there had been UKIP would have won a general election,. They have failed to win any new seats at any GE.

It goes against our system of representative parliamentary democracy. Attlee and Thatcher agreed on referenda and plebiscites and the damage they do, . The evidence was clear to them and its certainly clear now.

OK so we voted on leaving the EU and we decided to leave.

When do we get a choice on single markets, immigration, ECJ, human rights and workers rights?

Because we were told we could keep some of them if we like. Who decides what we keep?

We did, during the GE campaign, and Mrs Mays version of brexit was rejected by the people.

"There was no great desire from the people to leave the EU"

The 52% who voted for it when given the first clear chance to do so disagree with you. And that's 52% of those who voted on the day. Only 35% of the eligible electorate voted to remain in the EU.

UKIP didn't win any seats in 2015 it's true, largely due to the FPTP system. In a PR system (not that I'm advocating that) they would have been the third largest party, along with the generally eurosceptic nature of much of the Conservatives and more of Labour than a lot of their voters would care to admit, including their new leader.

There is/was a very large and very clear desire to leave the EU amongst the British people. Denying that won't do the cause of those still fighting to remain or at the very least have the softest of Brexits any good.

Rejected by the people who voted her in as the largest party with a higher percentage of the vote than anyone else and higher than in recent elections you mean?

No more referendum on internal Tory party difficulties. Parliament should take back control (see what I did there?) That is after all what it's there for.

The EU wouldn't allow us to pick and choose and some of these issues might be mutually exclusive anyway. So we can't have a referendum on that - makes no sense.

We have a brand, sparking new parliament directly elected by around 70% of "the people" just a few days ago. The first thing it should do when it reconvenes is have a vote on whether to reverse article 50.

I hate replying to these threads but I just can't help myself such is my strength of feeling as to how unbelievably stupid the Brexit vote was.

Yes a referendum on such a complex matter was a ridiculous thing to do. Nobody can honestly say that the public were well informed. Half of the country probably spent more time considering who to kick off the X Factor than what the consequences of leaving the single market might be. Then there was the fact that the leave campaigners themselves (some of whom were only interested in their own power) just told the public complete rubbish...things like how we would have 'the exact same benefits' outside the single market (David Davis) and that we could 'have our cake and eat it'. Even their main robotic 'take back control' slogan was misleading (The Brexit government's own white paper now states that we never lost it).

I remember at the time posting on Facebook and telling anyone who would listen that this Brexit business wasn't just some simple yes or no and being met with blank faces. I remember that people had absolutely no clue what Article 50 was and thought that if there was a leave vote we could just write a little letter the next day and that would be it; no real issues to resolve for businesses, politicians or real people because of course 'the experts were part of the lying elite'.

And here we are 1 year later, an embarrassment on the world stage, having pointless GE's full of false promises (because nobody knows how much money will be available after Brexit), a slowed economy (now THE worst performing major economy in the world), a £ which never recovered and cost of living rising with real wages falling across the board for the first time in years.

And yet, nobody wants to talk about the damage that has ALREADY been done by that stupid vote. To do so would be 'talking our country down' and politicians and even our own BBC are scared to really address it such is the clout of the billionaire, Brexit backing media owners like Murdoch and the owners of the Daily Mail. Actually, the greatest damage inflicted has been nothing to do with £ or the economy but has to do with the wasted government and civil service time and money spent already discussing Brexit when our NHS and public services are in crisis and desperately needed attention. All a total shambles and nobody able to state real tangible benefits. Ask a leave voter to tell you where the big trade deals are coming from and when and they can't...could be 5-6 years away, could be 7 or 8 but one thing is certain...nothing that comes even close to the value of the single market will come sooner. Even Trump seems to have put the EU back ahead of the UK in the queue for a trade deal as he learns on the job.

I could go on...but yeah, people (even leave voters) need to start admitting it for what it is: a total shambolic mess and a mistake which was based on lies and misinformation. Should never have been put to the public.

Ive never met a person who would choose her to negotiate. Far more capable people in that party and others. Unfortunately the choice was between her, corbyn and Farron which is a bit like choosing between George, zippy and bungle when you know Geoffrey is the one with all the brains.
