20mph speed limit. 14:26 - May 18 with 6788 views | Snipper | The amount of people I know who are being sent letters from the Metropolitan Police informing them of a penalty notice in 20mph areas is mental. Many of them for doing 25mph. I perfectly understand why it’s 20mph outside schools and the surrounding areas, but 20mph late at night on the way home from work is obscene. It’s got sod all to do with safety in my opinion. It’s a bloody cash cow for the old bill. It’s a very easy way to criminalise people. And no, I haven’t been done.

20mph speed limit. on 17:58 - May 18 by stowmarketrange | The only problem with raising motorway speeds to 80mph is that still won’t be fast enough for some, and they will raise their speed to nearer 90mph as they sometimes go 10mph over the existing speed limit now. |
That’s fine. There always has to be some sort of upper limit and if someone is doing, say, 100mph even on a dead motorway at 5am that probably isn’t safe. There are times when it’s clearly safe to do 75-80 for any competent driver IMO but then I guess things have to be dumbed down to accommodate the least competent. I’m on the M25 3-4 times per week and there’s always woeful driving, probably more so when it’s busy and crawling along at 40 but that stuff rarely gets punished when speed is a more quantifiable and therefore easier target. In summary, I hate everyone on the road who isn’t me but especially tradesmen who cut you up to move into a lane going no faster than the one they’re in with a fag in one hand and Greggs in the other.

20mph speed limit. on 17:45 - May 18 by QPR_Jim | I've never considered the speed I drive to be an expression of myself, people must think I'm angry the speed I go. I've always liked the idea of 80mph on motorways and 20mph on residential streets. Streets with cars parked either side, children and pets liable to wander into the road aren't generally that long so cutting the speed from 30 to 20 for a few hundred meters isn't going to add on much time to a journey. However, an extra 10mph on a motorway journey is much more beneficial. |
Coupled with other schemes such as LTNs, it does add to the journey time. Anyone who claims otherwise is deluding themselves. Compare leaving the area around LR now with leaving 20 years ago. You're forced to go on the Uxbridge Road which increases congestion and therefore pollution. Moreover, there are a host of other issues with driving at 20MPH, aside from being an easy target for speed cameras. A car is less efficient at 20MPH. You drive in a lower gear which is less healthy for the engine, burns more petrol and emits more emissions. A clear case of "safety" trumping "the environment".

Welcome to my world chaps. 🙂 That sign always makes me laugh. You’ve got one of the busiest Airports in the world just to the south, and eight lanes of traffic where the sign is. What pollution? 🙂 Just past that sign is the start of the ‘Smart Motorway’ so don’t go over 62mph, you will get done by the‘Average Speed’ Cameras. In town, don’t go over 21mph in a 20 zone, as the cameras have been adjusted for Electric vehicles. There is no more plus or minus 10%. It’s a post pandemic cash grab, nothing else. Anyone with ‘Raised’ number plates, that Cameras can’t read…..do yourselves a big favour and change them back. There is a big purge on them, don’t get caught, you will regret it. One last thing……….. Where there are painted cycle lanes at the side of the road. If the lines are broken, you are fine. If it is a solid continuous white line, don’t cross it with even a single wheel. It’s 3 points and a hundred pound fine. Anyway… What’s going on? We should be told Sort it out

And before you say "it's too difficult" remember you have a brake pedal and a speedo. They are quite handy.

But you can spend more time looking at the dashboard instead of the road if you’re constantly monitoring your speed, unless you have cruise control on your vehicle. So how does it make it safer for other road users?

I had to cough up £65 to Hounslow council after inadvertantly entering such a street in Chiswick just up from Fullers brewery. Sometimes there are so many signs to look out for it could be dangerous to motorists and pedestrians. |

The M25 is by far the worst driving experience in the country if you are a competent driver who understands the basic rules of the Highway Code. It seems as though half the people on it do not understand the simple concept of only moving across lanes to overtake. Why do people insist on sitting in the middle lanes doing 60? Or move over to the inside lane and sit there doing barely 70? Then wonder why other idiots then start under taking. I actively avoid any route that involves that motorway for any more than 2 junctions, I cannot stand it! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The M4 roadworks up to Reading were pretty dreadful too.I lost count of the times I had to undertake in my truck because a car was sat in the middle lane doing 40mph and wouldn’t move into the near side lane.Do some people actually pass a test?

20mph speed limit. on 16:26 - May 18 by Northernr | Yeh I've had this experience. To drive from where I am now in Totting to basically anywhere in the country other than the South Coast you have to go across the river at Wandsworth and then to Hammersmith and/or the Bush to get on the M3, M4, M40 or north circ. I'd been happily doing that over Wandsworth Bridge for a few months and then after one of the away games suddenly had a ticket from H&F council. All the streets now apart from the main arterial roads between Wandsworth Bridge and Putney Bridge are now camera protected and you can't drive through unless you live there. That's not a little rat run cut through either, it's just.. the way. You're now basically forced to drive through Putney and over Putney Bridge or across Wandsworth Bridge and up into Earls Court. Traffic there, already impossible, is now basically end of days. When moving house I toped out at 2 hours 45 minutes Tooting to Barnet, and an hour and half of that was spent on Putney Bridge Road trying to turn right onto the bridge. Unless you're doing it between about 11pm and 5am you can basically forget it, write off 2-3 hours just to get out of town.

If you're going to the M3/M4/M40 I'd go through Roehampton/Barnes/Sheen towards Kew Bridge. I never go via Wandsworth/Putney Bridge, it's a nightmare! [Post edited 18 May 2023 19:36]

The people who sit in the middle lanes and are incapable of moving to the near side lanes are normally Volvo MPV drivers, probably the same Volvo MPV drivers who when approaching mini roundabouts find It Impossible to use their left and right indicators as a guide for other mini roundabout users to work out exactly and safely what Mr Volvo MPV driver Is going to do next as he Journeys towards Waitrose with Mrs Volvo MPV driver in the passenger seat wearing a nice trilby hat and matching scarf. In recent years on various journeys to Kent Via the M25 and back I've seen on two different occasions Volvo drivers wearing tank tops.

So they banned non-residents' cars during rush hour Mon-Fri. Unbeknown to me they changed it to 24/7. I drove through Sunday lunchtime. £65 fine doubling to £130 if not paid within 14 days. Luckily I was driving at 20mph otherwise God only knows what I'd been charged.

It really depends on how much of your journey is on residential roads as to how much longer it would take. With the 20mph thing I think it's safer, not sure about efficiency but normally the key is keeping a steady speed and not accelerating and breaking continuously.

M25 kinda makes me laugh in rush hour traffic - if you drive in lane 1 you tend to go at a higher average speed than those who think they're in the fast lane in lane 4!

20mph speed limit. on 09:32 - May 19 with 957 views | hubble | I've just been in Cornwall for 2 weeks. It's a driver's dream compared to London: there are 4 speed cameras on the A30 between the M5 and Penzance, and it's a great driving road if you like going fast. And in Cornwall itself, provided you don't have a big car, it's just great fun. And of course you've got gorgeous scenery, greenery, stunning vistas and fresh, fresh air to boot. When I got back to London yesterday, ugh my gawd what a nightmare; average speed cams, traffic jams, 20MPH everywhere.. what a scam. I can't understand why people dawdle along on completely empty roads when there are no pedestrians, cyclists or schools about. Just f*cking get on with it! The level of lemming-like conformity in this country is hideous.

In my humble opinion, the council introduced these schemes as a way of making money under the guise of environmental concerns. https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/lewisham-partial-road-block-which-caught-out-1700 Government cuts to local funding have definitely played a part. Money raised from the schemes goes back into the community, which is all good, but please stop pretending it's about the environment.
