First time I’ve ever seen him. Thought he came across quite well, showing dignity, restraint and backbone. As with most things these days, half the country will be incandescent with rage, and the other half won’t care. That’s a far more important issue in my eyes.

Interesting to hear that he was well aware of the threat of pandemics and coronaviruses before the crisis. Perhaps he’s not the all powerful man behind the curtain as we’ve been led to believe.

Interesting.

I thought he was a straightforward shooting weekend away from the Prince Andrew car crash.

Opinions eh.

His child didn't need the toilet on a 270 mile journey from London, yet did on a 30 minute journey to test his eyesight

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

Come on now he`s a sleaze merchant, saying that he has done no worse than the 4 labour mps who have just been caught breaking lockdown rules and the media guys all huddled together trying to get to him outside is house, but he has broken the rules and is relying on a gullible public to believe him which is a category I will have to put you into I`m afraid.

What exactly do you think is the more important issue? That half the country won't care? That's more important than one of the most senior figures in the PM's inner circle flagrantly breaking the rules they've told us all to stick to? Apologies if I'm misunderstanding you, because that seems bonkers to me.

Also, if you really believe that he was 'well aware of the threats of pandemics and coronaviruses before the crisis', I have a lovely bridge to sell you.

I didn’t see all of it, so perhaps there were sections where he came across worse. I don’t doubt he may not have been completely honest in his recollections, but don’t think he’s covering up a crime. The Prince on the other hand...

The story itself doesn’t interest me at all, other than as yet another example of the media whipping up the populace into a frenzy. It cannot be right that his family home is subject to threats.

Of course it isn't right that this family home is subject to threats. Awfully convenient as a means for his supporters to try and shift the focus of the story, while also possibly generating some sympathy for him though...

You’d be wrong on that front perplex, I don’t necessarily believe him but I don’t care either way. If he’s broken the rules, and there’s evidence of that, then he should be fined like anyone else. It’s not worth the time of day.

I know that some of what I’m posting has already been brought up by other posters, but for my own sanity need to post.
First comment, there were a couple of searching questions about the 35 mile drive and the petrol but they were brushed aside and not picked up on by the next journalist who just kept with the don’t you feel sorry questions etc.
So here goes, with what I think I heard.
His wife was ill so he left No 10 to go home. He had doubts about coronavirus but she felt a bit better so went back? Rule break for not self isolating then.
He then decided that he might get the virus so drove the approx 260 miles after deciding without any checking if anyone could look after his child if he stayed in London and they were unable to care for their 4 year old.
He left London without contacting Boris or anyone else to tell them his plans. No medical advice taken, for this journey.
He later goes on about the test before driving back, but made no comment about if he had become ill on the journey up.
No comment whether his wife is able to drive, but the assumption is that she can’t.
He isolated for the 14 days apart from a walk in the private woods, and to pick his son up from hospital. No question asked if his 17 & 20 year old family members could drive.
He then says about the drive to test if he could travel to London, not only was that not an essential journey, but took his 4 year old in the car. Where were the 17 & 20 year olds that could have looked after him for an hour as he thought he was now clean?
They walked along by the river but it was ok as no contact with anyone. Wasn’t the rule that you could drive to an exercise point but only if you exercised more than the drive time.
On the way back his son wanted the toilet. Now I’m fairly certain he gave 2 accounts. One he stopped for his wife and son to get out of the car for the toilet break, but think I heard that they had a little play.
He says that he did this drive to check his eyesight level for a potential 260 mile journey. What would have happened if he couldn’t complete this short drive?
Now he also says he took medical advice before driving back. Logic to me would say that if he had told them about eyesight problems he should give it a couple more days?
His role back in London was so important that he couldn’t do it by phone PC etc but was willing to risk his family on that long drive back if his eyesight problems returned.
He wasn’t certain if he had stopped for petrol. He had a Range Rover? Capable of doing a full return trip, a trip to hospital and the short drive? Now that is pushing it (or at least he would end up pushing it)
He did have a phone call with Boris to say what he’d done but neither can remember what was said. Yes really.

I’m sure that there are other things but I’ve rambled on (just like him) so will leave it there.
The only thing that was of any real clarification by him is that he hadn’t gone back up there.
Disappointed that the media didn’t press him more on what was not down to personal opinion but facts on what he said he’d done that seemed to break the guidance and rules.

I do think polarisation of views is the most important issue of our times. It has become so stark in recent years, and not just in the UK, that one has to wonder what is behind it and where will it end.

I agree that we should be suspicious of his claim to have been on the front foot with pandemics, which is why I picked it out as interesting. He’s made that claim publicly now, so in any enquiry down the line that will be tested.
