OK, I'll bite. He's not very good.
His improvement is down to two things. MC has found a way to utilise him to his strengths. Namely, set pieces and he has a winger in front, Smyth, who works his socks off doubling up, and covering.
Put Dunne in the PL and he is going to be eaten alive.
All the improvement Dunne has shown is down to MC, and Dunnes own character. Bet he does nothing if he goes to Sheff Utd. Wilder won't have a clue.
For the record I'd like him to stay, but it's not the end of the world if he leaves. |
Honest but harsh, I think.
I wouldn't fancy him either as part of a CB pairing in the PL, but I think he could do a job on the right hand side of a three.
There also genuinely seems to be something in this ungainly RB role that's worth sticking with - he's been a revelation there.
I'd agree a big part of his improvement is down to his character, another positive factor.
So I can see the limitations too, in some ways he's often been more than the sum of his parts with us if that makes sense, but I'd say he's a good player that we'd miss greatly at the minute. |  | | |

Why is it negative selling a player if we get a good fee? We are talking Dunne, not van Dyke. He can be replaced.
As a club, every player is up for sale, so I'm not going to get upset if we get a good fee. It can be reinvested in a younger, hopefully better player. That's the model Nourry wants.
It will be a negative if Dunne doesn't sign a contract and walks for nothing in May to Sheff Utd anyway.
I don't think anyone should get to attached to any of our players. All over the Twitter that a couple of Turkish clubs are interested in Varane. If they bid, and it's a good fee, he gets sold. Simple. |  | | |

Without wishing to give any credence whatsoever to FLW...Jimmy, as far as we know, hasn't re-signed, so still a debate worth having.
One thing that has been stuck in the back of my mind...Jimmy at RB last season was part of Marti's Emergency Pragmatic Surgery approach.
Of course MC started this season hoping to be a little truer to his principles...and am I dreaming it, or was their a quote along the lines of JD not being a shoo-in for right back?
Marti may have reverted (once again successfully) to Emergency Pragmatism - the Sequel!...with Jimmy again playing a starring role, partly as the two RBs who were brought have been pants. But if I was the Irish Cafu, in the back of my head would be: will I be first choice here next season, if Marti gets a squad a little more capable of playing his preferred style... |  |

He may be worth more than £2m to QPR, but he has 6 months left on his contract. We'll be lucky to get £500k if he's sold.
BOS was sold to Fenerbache for naff all with 6 months left, and he was 23 years old.

I think we need to point Jimmy towards the situation that Luke Freeman found himself in when he was transferred to Sheff Utd. It effectively ended his career - he disliked Wilder and Wilder hated him - to the extent he never played for them.

It does my head in that only 12 games of decent form has everyone circling around your assets. Often it is the blend and balance of a team at a certain time that makes players look good. They then piss off and stagnate somewhere a bit higher up on the food chain.
Jimmy Dunne has his limitations but would be a total hero if he spent the rest of his playing days with us. Just not how it works anymore. He will get paid a bit more and be another journeyman championship player with a brief spell in or around the Premier.
Same with Marti.....we are 10th in the Championship and everyone wants a piece of him.
The lack of patience and loyalty makes it hard to love professional football these days.

Jimmy Dunne is the heart beat of this team. He literally bleeds blue and white hoops.
Agreed we are in the modern age of football, but Dunne is never going to fetch £2 million anyhow. Maximum £750k but that's not enough. He is such an important player here. Gives it everything every single moment. Is a threat and effective in both areas. Has added scoring and assisting to his game. Is hard to pass and he can adapt so if we change tactics to a back three, he can play either role.
So adaptable, a goal threat, a presence in defence, a man that can assist and works well with the men in front of him and a future captain and in a few years will be the senior pro that can help the younger players in the first team and a man that knows the club inside out.
So his value to us is on many many different levels and if some idiot decides to get rid too soon, there would be repercussions. A lot of fans would not accept such a stupid decision and could quickly lead to a decline.
Dunne is that important for us now. It's not happening though. Otherwise I will eat my hat !!! [Post edited 23 Jan 22:19]

I like Jimmy Dunne a lot. Fun to watch, makes things happen, aerially so dominant, good bond with the club and the fans, the right sort, and his form since his dad's passing is genuinely inspirational. And he's so important to us. He's had 50% more touches than any other player this season. That's simply incredible.

But a great player, centre back or right back, he is not.
A very useful championship player, if used in the right way, he certainly is. I'd even like to see him reprise Georges Santos and play upfront one day. As great as a dog in the school playground as Clive might say.
I hope he signs a new contract. If he doesn't I'll be very sad to see him go.
If he indicates he won't sign then we have to balance whatever anyone offers now, with how much he's worth to us in the remaining games of the season calibrated by the replacement we could get with the funds. Anything of seven figures and I think he'll be gone. Anything less and I'm not sure it's worth it to us, and we can just enjoy him for the next few months and hope he decides to sign on in the summer.
If he does go to someone with greater ambitions than us (and if not, then why leave), I fear, like 100percent, it will be like Freeman, Cook, Taraabt and he'll never be the main man again, never play every minute. He'll be found out as not good enough as a centreback and only be cover. And he won't be fancied at rightback by most managers. He'll end up with 5 starts and 15 sub appearances a season, and that'll be it until he reaches his 30s and drops down again. And that would be such a shame when he can continue with us who love him.
