Is Europe turning ? on 17:47 - Nov 28 with 708 views | AnotherJohn | Re the RoI, the two-tier healthcare system is probably the weakest aspect of that country's social welfare system. People need to pay for private supplementary health insurance to get reasonable access to care, and indeed last time I checked Ireland had the highest uptake of private medical insurance in Western Europe. This means that if you are in a position where you cannot afford supplemental insurance you are in the lower tier of a two-tier healthcare system. - you are on a lengthy waiting list. The Irish can thank the EU and the austerity that followed its imposition of the excessive deficit procedure for this situation. Since then there has been impressive economic growth associated with international companies moving to Ireland to take advantage of the low rates of corporation tax, but not so good for ordinary working people. Trickle down is not working.

| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Is Europe turning ? on 15:50 - Nov 28 by felixstowe_jack | Higher than both the UK and the EU. Seems the rich get richer in Ireland while the poor are homeless. |
No - Ireland remains happy to be free from BritNat rule. the United Kingdom is actually amongst the happiest countries in the world. That's right. Based on the UN's calculations, the UK are the 20th happiest nation on Earth, being narrowly beaten out by Lithuania, Czechia, and our neighbours to the west, Ireland. 29 Mar 2024 Get it right up ye :-)

This post is about Europe not the UK do stick to the topic. Roi is happy to be ruled by the undemocratic EU that is fine it is their choice although the did vote against surrendering more Sovereignty to the EU in a referendum until the EU refused to accept their democratic decision and forced then to vote again with the threat of sanctions if they did not change their minds.

Europe is shrinking as a Continent and Power it seems , EEC membership was thrown away by the last Brexit vote , nice one by whoever voted for Brexit , so now the UK is stranded . Never mind Trump will be in power soon , pull Uncle Sam out of NATO and cut funds to help Ukraine , they will then be on their own too . Big Continents will get bigger Africa , Asia and America will swamp the EU and their ideals . Yes we as a big chess game are pawns , cannon fodder for the big hitters Worldwide .

Partially so, but more people pay out of pocket here. The difference is that a higher proportion of people in the RoI buy PMI. At end of 2023 it was estimated that 47% of Irish people have PMI, while the UK figure is around 22%. The latter has risen dramatically from 2021 when it was about 12%. We may be on the slippery slope.

Very true. The empire has gone. Form modern alliances or have no say. Certainly the NATO commitment is hugely important. Hopefully the Trumper man-baby is just full of wind and pish as usual.

We are also ahead of Germany, France, Spain, Poland and Italy. Portugal and Greece are way down the table. Seems that a very large chunk of the EU is less happy than the UK.

I suppose that "modern alliances" could be either alliances of sovereign nation states or empires in which one or two powerful states dominate others in the grouping You mean like the Franco-German pairing has dominated the EU? Merkel was one of the architects of the "open borders" policy that is seeing chaos reign in areas of Europe today. What will her true legacy be?

How does one measure happiness though? People often lie about how they feel. How many times does someone ask you “how are you?” and you reply “fine thanks” even though you could feel like crap inside?

Is Europe turning ? on 08:11 - Nov 28 by felixstowe_jack | It will be interesting to see how the Irish vote on Friday in thier general election. There seems to be unrest with their government performance. Main reasons seems to be lack of affordable housing, housing shortage, failure to build enough houses, waiting lists for hospital treatment, mass immigration. All this despite records budget surplus due to firms divering their European profits to ROI to take advantage of low corporation tax. The Irish unemployment rate is 4.8% so people feel they are not benefiting from Ireland tax haven status. |
Sinn Féin wont come out of it unscathed. And good enough for them.

They don't really want the Ukranians either. They don't see them as refugee as most seem well off compared to most refugees. The vast majority of Ukraine has seen no real conflict, they should stay there

And I believe the UK's share has increased, it was 3% in 2019 but had risen to 6% in 2023, I can't find a newer figure. That doesn't seem to tally with the idea Brexit has been a complete disaster, maybe things are swinging our way, after all if 27 countries can only manage 15% but one country can manage 6%... I agree the EU is a failing project, it should never have turned towards political integration. If had remained purely a trade bloc it would be much better and the UK wouldn't have left.

Michel Barnier the former EU commissioners for .internal markets and services has forced his budget on France at its parliament failed to agree on it. His autocratic style, when he was an unelected EU commissioner does not work in a democracy when policy has to be approved by a parliament. He is now facing a vote of no confidence which could result in the collapse of the French government.

The French have over stretched themselves with debt, debt interest is a problem, Barnier is trying to cut government spending by reducing pensions, benefits etc. but he does not have a majority. https://www.euronews.com/business/2024/01/23/france-faces-four-major-economic-ch [Post edited 2 Dec 17:21]

Maybe his time in the EU autocracy had him thinking he could force his views on people. He certainly forced some "stuff" on the UK. So recently we've had the German coalition collapsing, the French is dissarray, the Polish standing up against the EU (amongst others) an immigration crisis across Europe, the EU share of world trade dropping. All that and some people still think the EU is the land of milk and honey.
