Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 18:05 - Jan 28 with 10686 viewsmingthemerciless

I see there's been few articles this week about the Colchester v Leeds FA Cup giant killing game in the 1970-71 season.

One or two articles mention that in the previous round they were losing 3-1 at Rochdale with 10 minutes to go. I went to that game . I remember Tony Buck bursting through the middle to put the 'Dale 4-1 up only for the goal to be flagged off for offside. I was right in line and he was onside.
They went straight down the other end and made it 3-2. From then it was game on and we did well to get a 3-3 draw.

On the Monday we were drawn with Leeds at home. The plum tie in the round. We were all over the moon, a massive pay day. That money could have made all the difference. I didn't go down to Colchester but when I saw the score I couldn't believe it !

12,123 on Spotland for the tie that afternoon. Anybody else remember the Tony Buck incident.

Cheers for that. Will add it to my records.

I thought he was pretty good at Spotland. He was going to be a top player at Liverpool but as you say he was injured.

From what I can recall,Alf Arrowsmith was always behind the likes of Roger Hunt,Ian St.John and the other top players Liverpool had at the time, though he still scored a few goals for Liverpool whenever he got the chance. He eventually went to Bury, then came to Dale in a straight swap for Billy Rudd,a deal that most Dale fans thought was absolutely ludicrous. I can`t remember the Oldham game,so don`t know if I even went, but made it to the Coventry midweek match that they played in the afternoon so they didn`t have to use the floodlights either because of rolling power cuts,or of an electricity workers strike.

Back to the Colchester home game - in that mad last 5 minutes did not Colchester miss a penalty (saved) as well? I seem to remember it as that.

Correct. That happened when the game was still 3-1, and the penalty was against the run of play. Everyone laughed when it didn't go in, as if to say "you're not even getting a chance". Five minutes later, they were level.

For a short period of time he was in the first team by right. St John had been dropped back into midfield with Gordon Milne. Arrowsmith and Roger Hunt played as a twin strike force with Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson out wide. Not a bad front four. Then Arrowsnith got quite badly injured and that was that at top level.

Just been reading up on Alf. He got a serious cartilage injury playing in the 1963/64 Charity Shield game after establishing himself as a prolific striker in the previous season. His goals firing Liverpool towards the title in the previous season. What might have been ?

It was a bit like getting a bad cruciate injury today. Just took a bit of pace off him apparently

Nothing to do with power cuts or strikes. The original game was postponed because of the weather and the game rearranged for midweek. 'Noel, Noel that barsteward Cantwell' the coventry manager , refused to play under the floodlights saying they were not up to standard, though every other division three team were expected to be prepared to play under them and division 1 crystal palace had played under them earlier in the season in a league cup replay.

The FA caved in to Coventry's demands which meant the game had to be played midweek afternoon. Anyway it all worked out well in the end.

Cantwell had already endeared himself to Rochdale fans when on hearing the third round draw asked the press "where's Rochdale' even though he had spent a large part of his playing career at Old Trafford.

Cantwell - the king of bulletin board material!

Yeah, some managers never learn. How to motivate the opposition. Another great game from the past. I can still see the Church Inn End cross bar twanging from that late Jeff Blockley header though.

The header which appeared to cross the line and spin back out again if my memory of that day is right.
There was also a rumour went around that for the replay, one of our players had been in a spot of bother on the Sunday night and that the team was late setting off as he had to be "collected from the local constabulary" before the team could leave.

I was behind the goals at the Sandy Lane end so I couldn't say. I just saw it clatter the bar. Heart stopping moment though.

Yeah the player had lost his memory apparently because he said to the coppers " Do you know who I am ? "

What a dipstick. He'd be right at home with todays players.

I'll let you know in due course.

The yellow and blue kit was donated by Trevor Butterworth before the coventry game and was considered lucky after beating them wearing it, it became the away kit after that match and we olayed in thise colours for year ,teams didnt change kits every year like now. The thing is in the years we wore it we never won wearing it, we used to joke that if we were wearing it for the away match we wouldnt go, it was that bad, things improved abit when we got rid of it.

Which just emphasises my point that the Monday replay must`ve been agreed upon before Colchester got on the bus to go home as I can`t recall many Mondays being used for a replay. Sure,I went to Huddersfield to watch United wallop Sunderland in a second replay in the sixth round in 1964,but that was because the semifinal was due the following Saturday. A very strange decision indeed.

Sounds like DiddyDave was mixing Coventry up with Cambridge, re. the power strikes, etc.

What was Tony Buck's overall Dale goals to games ratio? I know he was an expensive signing and hit the ground running, and that much later he suffered a broken leg against Reading.
Did he end his career at Dale or move on?

League: 84 apps, 29 goals
FA Cup: 6 apps, 2 goals
League Cup: 3 apps, 0 goals

TOTAL: 93 apps, 31 goals

He made 16 appearances (3 goals) for Northampton after leaving Dale.

I was in primary school when the Coventry game was played. If you got a note from your parents and they picked you up you were allowed to skip school that afternoon. Great day but probably would not be allowed now

A really smart signing. We'd played Newport one Saturday and I went to a party with Vinny Ratcliffe and his wife. She worked with my girlfriend at the time. He told me that night that Buck had signed after the game. He was chuffed because he really rated Buck. A pretty quick and direct striker, he was a pretty slim guy about 6 ft tall. A decent two footed finisher and a good header of the ball.
Things were going great until he got injured. After that we'd no money to spend so David Cross was brought in before he was quite ready and the team drifted down the table from being in the top three.

Buck was never the same player again. He came back into the first team after the injury but the spark had gone. I broke my leg so I know what the issues are. Not everybody recovers. As someone else said he went to Northampton but with not much success.

The ' Dale team that got promoted was the best team Rochdale team I ever saw. Some great entertainers in the squad. Norman Whitehead on a good day, Billy Rudd, Denis Butler all worth the price of admission on their own

Another player who started to make a real impression around that time was Hughie Riley. A young, talented midfielder who had goals in him, a bit like Callum Camps today.

Back to Tony Buck, he was rated as the best forward playing outside the top two divisions and was easily championship standard. As you say, we were flying with him leading the line and surrounded by very good wingmen plus Reg of course. Buck's injury marked the start of our decline (although we had a decent side for a brief spell early in 72-73) that eventually led to the debacle season of 73-74

I think the debacle of 73-4 season can be laid directly on the firing of Dick Connor at the end of 72-3 and the appointment of Walter Joyce. We had put together a nice run at the end of 72-3 after a mid season slump (we had been top of the division in October) and finished mid table.

The Joyce appointment had so many parallels with Steve Eyre. No experience, in love with his youth team players at Latics, no appreciation of experienced players then mid season when the game was up he signed Stan Horne and Jimmy Grummett, two geriatrics.
