Gavin Mahon in 'Forever' Rs 22:06 - Dec 4 with 3104 viewsstainrods_elbow

https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/2024/december/04/gavin-mahon-to-be-inducted-into-fore

Guy played 40 games for us in 3 years! He actually played one more game for Notts County, where he went after, to finish his career. No disrespect to GM, but the phrase 'squeezing blood out of a stone' comes to mind!

Not so much 'Forever' as 'Now and Then' Rs.

Poll: What points will we get from our 'Festive 3' (Swansea A, Norwich A, Watford H)?

Hasn't the discussion about what you are complaining about and what ForeverRs is been had many times?

'the association was setup to further enhance our engagement with ex-players, managers and coaches.

So far, Forever R's has recognised well over 100 former players, managers and coaches who have made a contribution to our history, however big or small'

Its not an award system. Just a projection of soft power, which bearing in mind how financially tight we are nowadays is quite a good thing.

I have to say, I quite liked Mahon and thought well of him at the time but, is he really a forever Rs player? A strange choice.

Oh no. You dared to disagree. A plethora of paragraphs incoming about how you are wrong and although discussing things is good, your opinion only matters if it is on sync

This board discusses many things over many years, which is basically its raison d'etre, if you think about it, and why should anything be 'resolved' just because you imply it should? (A discussion which you, ironically, are also adding to by complaining about the over-extension of such discussions.)

I think the clue is, or should be, in the title - the word 'forever' - which projects some kind of idea of legendary association, or at least long-committedness. Very, very few modern players fall into that category, or deserve to. That's my point, it ought to mean something! Dave Clement, Ian Gillard, Gerry Francis, Stan, obviously. Alan McDonald, Clive Allen, Les. It's not hard to get the general idea.

I don't really see what money's got to do with it. If it doesn't mean anything, why not just honour everyone from Alan McDonald to Ned Zelic? I suspect Gavin'll be surprised as anyone, and he probably hasn't thought about us for more than a few minutes since he retired.

O, do give me a break, you caricaturing twit - since when do I say other people's views 'don't matter'?! Ooo, Mr Stainrod has opinions and he argues for them. If you're too childish or reactionary to handle that and can't just give your own without resorting to petty attempts at personal bullying, go and talk to yourself instead!

I haven’t used the word resolved, and I mentioned money in relation to transfer power.

If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on players, squeeze as much as you can out of good will or ‘soft power’ which is basically what this is.

If a club builds a reputation for treating ex players right it becomes more attractive. Gavin Mahon leaves the club on Saturday with nice things to say about the club. To parents of young players looking for a nice club, to good faith agents, and to players deciding between us and other mid range football league clubs.

It’s a free hit, reiteration of the word free.

But why not just call it 'Former Rs' in that case, rather than diluting language and corroding the idea of specialness in football?

Its been established by QPR what the forever Rs club represents and communicated clearly. McMahon meets their criteria in their eyes, and its their "club". You're not really arguing about whether McMahon represents their criteria, you're arguing about the name. This is one of those situations where QPR is trying to do a good thing. Does the name of the Forever Rs REALLY matter?

But to answer your question about the name:
Because it costs them nothing
Because there's a small chance it means more to the players in question and so why wouldn't they
And whether that annoys someone on the internet is, and should be, a far lesser consideration.

He should be in it.

Not concerned how many games he played, what he did was play an important part in a position we desperately needed someone like him.

Part of the renaissance and deserves his place.

I thought he was decent when he played. How the current lot could do with someone like him in the middle.
1
Gavin Mahon in 'Forever' Rs on 10:07 - Dec 5 with 2215 viewsslmrstid

I must admit he is one that I look at with raised eyebrows. I think the vast majority of us all know its not a "Hall of Fame" for legends only, and people like Peter Ramage who perhaps didn't play as much as he'd like but did a lot of work off the pitch with the Community scene means he deserves his place as much as anyone, but I'm not aware of Mahon ever being that sort of figure (happy to be proven wrong on it!)

He was a decent player, a right sort etc, but in my eyes just another player who was around for a couple of years.

Not that I really feel that passionate about it to go all Liz Truss "This. Is. A. Disgrace!" on it mind.

I liked at the last game we inducted pre-war players who no-one alive will know but still played their own significant part in the clubs history with hundreds of appearances, I like that that side gets recognised.

Am I right in thinking that your view is based on the word forever? I would take the view (as a non writer or editor & language not being my forte) that forever includes something that is permanent, rather than only selecting one of the word's definition.

I've not seen "special" ever being associated with Forever R's & personally I'd automatically enrol every player who has signed professionally for Queens Park Rangers. Even if they didn't make a first team appearance, as many clubs do.

Its a play on the phrase "Forever Ours"
Implying that the players will be forever ours in our hearts and memories.

A sense of belonging, I suppose.

"Former Ours"? Doesn't have the same cache imho

Oh ok. So you haven't had people say to you that they don't appreciate the way you have spoken to them?? When you have said this is a place to air opinion but then you get colorfully offensive with a wonderful vocabulary, when they approach a subject from a different view point to your own. I must have not read those threads then.

Or when everyone else can see that a reply to a comment of yours is tongue in cheek and just a bit of a wind up but you go on 10 paragraph offensive. Ok, my mistake

Take care Sausage

Not all the inductees were prewar. I remember watching Arthur Longbottom play if only for the great giggles his name gave to all us schoolboys

This comes up every season, usually a few times when this type of player goes in

The whole point is to bring back former players or managers who represented the club whether it was for 5 games of 500 they played a part in our history and are welcomed back.

For someone who is very keen to share the benefit of his expertise and experience on a wide range of topics, you do a very good impression of being a totally clueless gimp when it comes to understanding how people work.

You ask for absolute credence and respect to be given to your opinions, but you express them in a particularly obnoxious way, and then choose to humiliate anyone who dares to say something you don't agree with.

You have truly learnt nothing from what people have been continually trying to tell you over this past year, and then you wonder why no-one takes you seriously..

Sweet Jesus!

Copy + paste my previous replies to nasty, sanctimonious and patronising posters like you who, embarrassingly, lecture me/others on how 'obnoxious' they are while writing completely obnoxiously themselves, and ventilating turgid insults rather than engaging with my perfectly reasonable thread, which is the whole point of this board.

I'm not even yawning it's so rank! Now take a tip and go and look in a mirror (assuming it doesn't crack)!

The fact that you choose to use the words "sanctimonious" and "patronising" in your response, whilst being entirely predictable, also say a lot more about you than you seem to realise...

Not sure its me that needs to look in the mirror, is it...

..And to your point about your thread being " perfectly reasonable", I would counter with the viewpoint that if Gavin Mahon, or any ex-player for that matter, has worn the R's shirt and has chosen to acknowledge the support that the fans has given him by accepting an induction into the Forever R's Club, than that is enough in my book for him to be accepted as a "Forever R".

I personally don't understand your obsession with length of service as a criteria to qualify for this honour. Surely the fact that the player chooses to acknowledge his time with us as significant is enough in itself.
