Just finished it . 3 hour course . No test and have to say very informative.
80% blokes mostly 50 somethings like myself.Well worth doing to avoid the three points.

Done 2 now and yes mostly over 50s in attendance I expect the youngsters who are caught arnt given this option as they are way over the excess speed tolerance.

Did one about a decade ago. Fking nightmare.

Did one last year. Super easy online and fine.

Both were proper marginal speeding offences.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Did one about 8 years ago. IIRC, doing 38 in a 30. It's a small stretch on the A316 when 90% of miles of A316 is 40mph and then suddenly there's a 30mph for about 500 yards. Very easy to be focusing on driving (and not looking at the pavement all the time for signs) and whizz through at 38 thinking you're under the 40 limit without realising you're in a very small 30 zone.

Most of the people too were 40-50+. Not sure if that's because young un's do grossly go over the limit and therefore get bans, young un's can't afford to drive so less of them on the road or oldies are just worse drivers.
My money is on the former.

Mine was an absolute riot.

You had a bloke from Southend who was basically on the road every day with his job, just slogging round the motorways day after day. He'd been done on the smart bit of the M1 past Luton late at night, with the inside lane displaying 50 (for no reason at all, of course) and the other three lanes displaying nothing.

He was absolutely livid, basically said the whole thing was a racket designed to rip off blokes like him "trying to earn an honest coin", and he was basically doing the course to avoid the points but wanted everybody to know he thought it was a crock of sht. He was my spirit animal, loved him and agreed with every word.

Anyway, instructor managed to settle him down and he didn't say too much. Then two thirds of the way through they started displaying road signs and whatever and asking what they meant and they put up exactly his scenario - inside lane at 50, other screens blank. We all wrote down that it means the inside lane is at 50 but the other lanes are national speed limit, and it's wrong apparently - if one board says 50 and the others are blank, it's 50 for all lanes. Well this booted it all off didn't it and caused absolute uproar with us all in unanimous agreement that it was an absolute crock of sht deliberately designed to fleece you (otherwise why not just light the other ones up?) and my mate from Southend screaming into the Zoom call "SEE, TOLD YOU, ABSOLUTE FCKING LIBERTY".

At the end of the call we had to say what our one big takeaway or learning was and Southend Man very proudly said "nothing at all" and rang off.

There was a younger guy on there from Streatham, perfectly reasonable all the way through, did the exercises, said very little. Towards the end launches into a diatribe about "I'll tell you who never fcking indicates - THE TURKS". Turkish woman on the call absolutely lets rip, so we had a good ten minute row there about who the worst indicators were between the Turks, the Brits or THE ARABS who this bloke also didn't have much time for.

Would recommend.

As a former resident of Turkey, I can't say I ever noticed a lack of indicating but I've never used the car horn as much as I did when I lived there.
It just felt like everyone else was doing it, very often for no discernible reason, so I may as well join in.

I just did mine. got caught doing 23 in a 20 mile an hour zone. It was actually informative to be fair, and i have slowed down partly as a result. Also had one guy who insisted on telling us all multiple times how unfair it all was.

Clive's sounds like comedy gold.

Went on one about 15 years ago. I also had a re-read of the highway code beforehand where it states that it takes about 100 yards for a car to stop from 70 mph. My car at that time said it could do it in 47 yards. So I mentioned this to the facilitator and all he said was that your reaction time makes up the rest of the distance. This did not add up to me. Highway code needs updating as braking systems on cars were better then and even more so now.

We also analysed the M4 crash of 1991 when 10 people were killed in the fog. It took 19 seconds for 51 vehicles to crash into each other. The resulting fire was horrific. So that brought it home to all who attended who were mostly men.

As an aside driving through Oxfordshire just after Xmas last year a deer ran into the road in front of me and stopped in the middle of road. I braked but my car had also 'seen' the deer too via the front facing radar and jammed on the brakes harder than I could. It tightened up our seat belts at the same time, sounded the alarms and we stopped with the deer just looking at us about 2 feet away from the front bumper. Then it just wandered off. So glad my car can react faster than I as I was doing about 50 mph on a single carriageway and the car stopped in a matter feet - not yards. Don't know what distance my current car will take to stop from 70 mph but it's definitely shorter than 47 yards..

did mine a year ago and the instructor gave us a top tip to keep your car in sports mode if you have it as the higher revs alert you to your speed and you're less likely to creep over the limit apparently.

haven't been out of sport mode since

Can we not knock it?

I'd say every country has its fair share of terrible drivers who can't indicate.

It's also ridiculous that the UK driving test doesn't include motorways.

"Right you've passed your test, feel free to drive at 70mph on motorways and hopefully you'll know what you're doing without putting other drivers at risk."

a month ago, i was driving up the M6, at 2am, and as i reached south of Stafford heading northbound, the overhead speed limit boxes all lit up, and displayed 20mph

Yup , 20 frickin miles per hour, all the way up to Crewe North J17 where i turned off mightily pee'd off.

No warning of traffic build up, lane closures, road works etc..... 20mph.

Non of us had a choice really in case dibble were hiding in the bushes.

Absolute racket. Coming back from Bristol City last season, late in the evening, motorway empty, gantries all the way from Reading into town stuck on 50mph - "to reduce air polution". We're going past Heathrow Airport lads, I don't think my Mini Cooper is the problem here.

Motorways are the simplest form of driving... If you can drive in a congested narrow street in your lessons and test then you can drive on a motorway...

Went to see Phil Jupitus a few years ago. The Only time he brought a smile to my face was when he asked the audience to “raise the hand if they currently own or have ever owned a BMW ?”
A good few raised their arms…..

“See, you Can indicate !”

I did one last year my first speeding offence for >30 years, amazing as I don't hang about on the Motorway. Anyway, like all others on our Zoom course, I was doing somewhere between 50 and 60 under a gantry flashing 50 on the M3 when I was en route to LR. I virtually gave the course it was pretty elementary but I was intrigued to learn the correct procedure when entering and leaving a Refuge area on a Smart Motorway. Blokey ic also said that the Amber flashing lights on non-smart motorways could be treated as 'advisory' whereas those within a red circle were compulsory and ignore them at your peril.

On another matter, I read of one bloke, whose defence was that he had heard that 70 was the new 50!?

Irish rural communities which I’m originally from don’t tend to indicate. Their attitude is “ you know where I live , where else would I be going “ my missus finds it hilarious being English.

This has come up previosuly and I mentioned then that I done one in Hatfield, walked in and was sitting next to none other than Marc Bircham in his QPR tracksuit! He was involved in U21 then, cant remember the year but he had to get away straight after as they had a game!!!

I have also done two now and both pretty good, last one was about 8 years ago now, so I have changed (or just not got caught!!)

One week after my rather nervous wife passed her test, she was dispatched to Manchester on business. When she told me, I couldn't believe that her company was doing this to a new driver, so I got her over to the M1 beforehand and had entering and exiting practice for a couple of hours. Still nervy, me as much as her, off she went.
That evening I got a call from a service station (before the advent of cell / mobile phones), it was herself, wondering if passing a sign that had Welcome to Scotland written on it meant she'd made a mistake.

The thing with motorways is that you're driving three to four times faster than on a narrow road so your thinking needs to be faster too.

When I passed my test my instructor said we should go on a motorway (not compulsory as it was a separate two hour lesson) and I did. Glad to have done it.
