JPR Williams RIP 22:06 - Jan 8 with 2635 viewsWilkinswatercarrier

A true great of the game. Double tour winner with the Lions and a Welsh legend.

My Dad watched him at London Welsh on Old Deer Park in Richmond during the 70s. Said he once stiched his own face on the sideline after a ruck, then went back on. Hard as nails.

Can you imagine one of our gutless lot doing that?

Went along with my dad on a regular basis from early 70s to mid 80s to watch London Welsh and even in the very amateur days the full back, running at pace with great changes of direction was a class apart and the welsh then had seven or eight current internationals in their first fifteen.

When not at Rangers now go along to watch Bracknell rugby and they playing London Welsh this Saturday.

The club gone flat broke twice and gone up six leagues to premiership twice before and need to do it again.

Remember JPR and he was a hard man but a decent well educated man - worked as a NHS doctor for all of his working life ie when he played the game was amateur sport but he was always consummate prfoessional in all he did...

Red card and penalty try these days, no-arms shoulder charge. Very lucky with the referee!

It's a measure of his greatness that he was known by his initials. Fantastic player and person who had a long career as an orthoepedic surgeon and basically played rugby for fun.

Was part of the greatest ever RU try with the tackle on him a certain red card nowadays. RIP JPR.

A bit young to remember him well, but have vague childhood memories of him being quite good. Stayed loyal to his large sideburns into old age I see, like Gerry Francis and his mullet. RIP.

There was another John Williams in the team who played on the wing. Hence JPR and JJ.

When he first came down from Bridgend to London to Study at StMarys University he lodged with my grandparents in Twickenham whilst turning out for London Welsh as my grandfather had before him.

Not quite. He won the British Junior Championship (beating David Lloyd) which was played at the All England Club.

That try is to rugby what Carlos Alberto's goal against Italy is to football.

Perfection.

Suffering since 1978.

Thanks CamberleyR. Good info from a knowledgeable and trusted member of this board.

Typical of Sky and the media to have inaccurate reporting. As they say, and I fully agree with, ' the devil's in the detail '.
