Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions 17:40 - Aug 2 with 2730 views | beat_the_bishop | So, Max in and Olly likely to be out. Probably one or two further movements before 3pm on Saturday but as it stands what would our best 11 be? Along with formation? I have the battle year on year trying to explain the ins and outs to my father, this year feels harder than usual as he will have forgotten about the ‘originals’ from 18 months ago which must be said there aren’t many of those left! I can’t wait to just talk football on Saturday! It’s been draining but the excitement is creeping in. Daaaaaaaaaaayullllllll. Daaaaaayulll.
Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions on 17:48 - Aug 2 with 2695 views | boromat | Lynch Keohane O'Connell McNulty Done Dooley Morley Grant Newby Beesley Odoh Maybe Dunne instead of Done as I want to see Matty used further forward and could be a safer bet than Odoh to start with. I'm expecting we'll see a full back or 2 sign though before the weekend.

I'm a bit baffled at why you keep mentioning Dunne. Have you watched him in the youth and reserves, as he's only made three EFL Trophy appearances for the first team and one of those was as a sub.

Because at the moment there aren't too many other options. What's your starting 11?

To be honest, I'm not someone who's that interested in picking teams and formations as that's the manager's job and he'll know who's available and what might be needed against different opposition, but if I had to, I'd go: Lynch Keohane Done Morley O'Connell Graham Dooley Grant Beesley Newby Odoh

Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions on 18:25 - Aug 2 with 2517 views | DaleyBrent | Lynch Graham O’Connell McNulty Keohane Morley Dooley Grant Newby Beesley Odoh More than comfortable with this team for first few games but we all know that these lads need support past that. Brierley, Taylor & Done are more than competent substitutes. Past that and it begins to worry me. Up the Dale!

Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions on 20:19 - Aug 2 with 2237 views | NorthernDale | As it stands and unless we suddenly sign half a dozen players, which I seriously doubt. we have a squad of 16 of which 6 have little or no football league experience. This includes 1 striker, whose ability I do doubt. As it stands we are seriously a relegation team and all we need to complete the mess is to sell O'Connell. We cannot even put a full team out, unless we use the youth players. The squad and team does not inspire any confidence, it is like going back to the 1980's. Lynch Keohane, O'Connell, Graham, Done Odoh Morley, Grant, Newby, Dooley Beesley Subs: Wade, Brierley, Taylor, Dunne, McNulty

I'm absolutely sure the manager knows this and his doing his level best to address the issues, but there have been one or two other things going on at the club that have taken priority.

Agree with TVOS' reply but would add it's more difficult than normal to compare ourselves to the rest of the clubs in the league. Normally right now I'd be thinking we were nailed on for bottom place but we've performed well in the friendlies and there are so many other clubs in the league in very similar positions if not worse. I can see most of the business being done close to the transfer window closing.

Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions on 20:42 - Aug 2 with 2129 views | 442Dale | In the 90s we often had squads which were light in depth at the start of campaigns. We were competing at the top end of the table in 95/96 until Docherty lost the plot and that was with pretty much the same 14/15 players. The game has changed yes, we do need more recruits, but it isn’t all bad as this is a fresh start and it’ll be interesting to see how Stockdale uses/adds to what he has. We need a full back or two and a midfielder, with a striker on loan being an option maybe later in the window. There’s time though, let’s see where we are in a month’s time. And actually, this season may be a bit different as clubs start to trim back more in squad sizes, so we might have inadvertently fallen into a positive position.

Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions on 20:45 - Aug 2 with 2116 views | dawlishdale | We started this pre season probably 4 players of first team strength short of being a squad capable of finishing in the top half. We have since sold probably our two best players and brought in two youngsters with very little experience. It's going to be very hard for us this season. as others have said, unless we sign a few good calibre players or make full use of the loan system, we can't expect much. It speaks volumes that so many have had to put Done & Keohane at full back in their starting eleven. Neither of them are specialist full backs. The saving grace is that a few other teams appear to be equally ill prepared. The sooner that Jarvis and Curran are seen off by the Board and the Trust, and the rancid ghost of Bottomley is exorcised from the club the better.

That's maybe an interesting point about other clubs. I've been penning the Scunthorpe and Forest Green profiles for TVOS over the last week and I've really had to research much more than usual who some of the players are, as they are unfamiliar names who have either been released by Academies at bigger clubs or who have maybe come up from non-league. Time was with a club like Scunthorpe that you could maybe rattle off over half of their team and know their backgrounds, but there is a noticeable difference in their squad now. We'll be no different to the majority in that regard, but the difference is a lot of other clubs maybe have more bodies than we do.

Current Starting 11 & Formation Predictions on 21:06 - Aug 2 with 2043 views | NorthernDale | Based on decades of watching the Dale, the friendlies mean now't, it is winning league games that matter and what message does it send to potential recruits, when we a bottom with zero points and the manager is still looking at potential recruits. I agree that we must also deal and eliminate the threat the shysters of Curran, Rose and the lowlifes attached to these people pose to the Dale, but dealing with the shysters, should not impact on recruitment. I may be slightly pessimistic, but i think that is part of the DNA of being a Dale fan, hopefully Stockdale will sign at least four players by Saturday (I would accept 2), including an experienced midfielder and striker (we have not even had a striker on trial). He may provide answers at the forum and an update. In hindsight I may change the team system slightly, to frustrate the opposition by having 5 at the back. Lynch Keohane, O'Connell, Graham, McNulty, Done Dooley, Newby, Morley, Grant Beesley [Post edited 2 Aug 2021 21:26]

There's no more pessimism in the DNA of Dale fans than there is in the population in general. That's pretty much reflected by this messageboard too In terms of starting the season, i see no particular reason for pessimism and am quite content to simply see how we start instead of making unnecessary pre-judgements

Look on the bright side, we have cleared out a lot of players connected with 4 years of declining fortunes, dare I say complacency had set in at the club in general and was being transmitted to the players. Since the end of last season we have sold 2 decent players on paper who didnt contribute as much as we might have expected. We have brought in a couple of players who with luck will develop into saleable assets and we now have a manager who thinks winning is important. The money from the sales will prop up the finances , SC card sales have probably exceded expectations and we have a new Chairman and board . OK we kick off in L2 but we are playing proper football, scoring goals and not conceding too many. We may not have enough in the squad for a genuine promotion push, but good foundations are being laid, youngsters rather than journeymen, pedigree, techical skills. They might get caught out in some of the physical battles but they can play around them too and there is some pace about them. I think we can start footballing teams to death again. A couple more bodies will do to be going on with, maybe a couple more in January when we will know what we need. The annual question.. are there 4 teams worse than us?

Agreed, we have a good squad, just needs building up. Actually like the fact the manager is not rushing into signings. It's a new start/ refresh, what's been needed.
