He only needs another 15 to make it a million per goal. And here was me thinking Gomis was an absolute stinker when he managed 5 by this point of the season when he was here. [Post edited 21 Dec 2019 18:15]

If he and his colleagues keep them up and they get another season in the PL they will have done well. They were amongst the favourites for the drop and currently 5th on 28 points, with Watford next up its not beyond the realms of possibility they will have 31 points at the halfway point. Imagine Arsenal, Man Utd and Spurs all missing out on European footy and the extra loot they so covet next year, it would be tremendous.
Oli McBurnie on 21:44 - Dec 21 with 4737 views | Dr_Winston | If McBurnie only scores five goals this season but they're all winning goals then he'll have paid for himself quite handsomely.

I don't think anyone on here is hailing him as the new Alan Shearer, but if he gets the goals to enable Sheffield Utd to stay up, then yes, 'One swallow will make a summer' as his transfer fee will be money well spent. And this is from someone who thought he would flop big time!

Dr W is right too, all goals are not of the same value. 30 gials in 30 losses would be totally useless. So far McBurnie's 2 goals have earned four absolutely precious points.

But the 30 goals would be proof that he was a Premier League quality striker which is kind of the discussion whilst two doesn't show anything of the sort (yet).

No it wasn't. the discussion in the main was whether he deserved the price paid. And the answer at this moment in time is yes.

Agreed... and you’d have to be fairly thick and clueless to think otherwise. It was obvious he was quality when playing on the shoulder of the last defender... his goal scoring record throughout his career says as much... he’s still the top ever goalscorer in Ligue 1. We were just too slow and ponderous playing the ball through to him meaning he was continuously offside. He was making great runs but we were too slow to play him in.

According to Transfermarkt Jean Pierre Papin is the all time top scorer in Ligue One, with Gomis sixth. He's still well ahead of some big names though, including George Weah. Your overall point is quite correct though. Initially he did quite well under Monk as the team was still set up largely in Laudrup's image, but the more Garry got his feet under the table the slower and more direct our football became and the less effective a player like Gomis was. Still amusing to see some people crowing about our league placing in that first year, when even most of those who defended him at that time for his "achievement" in Pulising our way into the top ten have started acknowledging the long term damage done in doing so.

Oli McBurnie on 08:33 - Dec 22 with 4275 views | JFSwan | The key to unlock gomis was an an form Jonjo Shelvey. Gomis was a powerful man with a good finish but would often make run that he knew he would never receive the ball. It was genuinely like having 10 men at times.

If he hadn't made the run he'd have had people slagging him off for being lazy and not running. On a hiding to nothing no matter what he did.
