Personally, I think the top 5 will be gone, Van Det Hoorn is possibly out of contract so could go, the Ayews will go or be loaned out, and 1 or 2 of the youngsters, Dan James, Connor Roberts or Joe Rodon may get sold to balance the books off. Once that’s done, I think Potter will be allowed to rebuild in earnest. [Post edited 14 Feb 2019 19:07]

Who is going to want to pay decent money for Rodon, Roberts and James? Rodon is looking like an average second tier centre back. Roberts looked out if his depth in the Premier League and is hardly standing out in the league below. James again is looking fairly average. Certainly not good enough to warrant a large fee as we saw this January, even more so when he's got 6 months less left on his contract come the Summer. We're seriously lacking in any players who will command the sort of fee we need.

Previously there have been young players brought in to the clubs who haven’t gone on it make it, but generally the youngsters aren’t on big money. It’s difficult to produce PL players full stop, in theory now that the the Club s in the Championship the Academy should be producing more players capable of playing at that level. By all means look at costs and wastage, but my view is that the Academy is one of the things that must be persevered with.

You forget that these are kids. What, 22? 23 years old? First season for most of them at a relatively high level. A significant chunk of our fanbase are treating these players, most of them playing at U23 last season, like hardened PL players who have been around the block a few times. They need to give them a break and let them develop. Give it a season or two of development at this level and who knows how far they can go. Just leave them alone to get on with it. Yes we want results week in, week out. But patience is required.

The academy is paying its way Imo. We've brought players I for very little money and they are now regulars - how much would we have been paying for Rodon, James, Roberts, Grimes, Celina, McBurnie, Fulton, Byers, CBR, Asoro, Byers, Chanda and Benda and what would we do with them if they needed time to develop? It's a shame that they seem to get institutionalised at that level but even so, the Academy is the smartest move we've made. [Post edited 14 Feb 2019 20:53]

Reduced parachute payments... on 22:51 - Feb 14 with 5410 views | jasper_T | A category one academy requires something like £4m in spending per year to maintain (that was the figure Sunderland put to it during their descent). What does £4m buy you in the Championship these days? Fans wanted us to spend the "wasted" cash on new players when we were in the PL and they'll want it even more now. But if you look at how many u23s players come through at Championship teams every season (everyone seems to have a hot prospect or two this year), and how much cash is being spent on them when they move on, it's not necessarily a massive drain. Look at Falkirk since they closed their academy. We've not spent six figures on anyone from up there since! We need to stay Cat One to fend off Cardiff from getting their mitts on young lads from Cardiff who are currently choosing us.

If you dont have money then £4m is an awful lot of money. In truth we have only produced Roberts and Rodon since Ben. The rest have been body snatched from elsewhere - other peoples hard work - using our Premier League money. Thats gone now, so changes will have to be made. Simples. Zabret was signed by the Swans back in 2013, he is now 23, he has never played a game for us. Wtf is going on. He was spotted playing in Slovenia. Shirley better to sign him at ,say, 22 when he should be straight in the first team squad.

Nothing wrong with body snatching. It's part of the academy process, especially for fledgling academies who have had limited access to junior talent. Improving the quality of our older development sides has made it easier for Joe, Connor, Aaron Lewis, Brandon Cooper etc. to progress as they have. There's definitely been some bad purchases that have hampered local players here and there (Jack Evans stuck behind a succession of Scots, for example) but the overall approach was sensible, and successful. The young players coming up to senior football now are used to winning and have pre-established partnerships with many of their teammates. Zabret had potential but he needed to grow another 6 inches (and learn to catch). His highlight videos as a 16 year old were pretty impressive. We've not really had another good prospect until Benda.

Don’t agree. Body snatching is for the Premier League clubs (maybe). We simply cant afford it now. Imagine all the coaches in our Academy having to work a bit harder with the local lads - worked well enough for Jazz, Ben, and Joey. We should only bring in players who can help our first team immediately. Waiting years is .... well, for the birds ... With Huwbert gone, the ask of the Academy just got real.

We certainly shouldn't spend six figures on Scotsmen any more, but Yan Dhanda and Jordi Govea on free transfers when their contracts expire? We should still be in the market for players who can contribute to the development sides and potentially push on. The reality is that the players we bring in now at 18/19/20 aren't going to be years from possibly featuring on the bench in a cup game, as they were in the PL. The gap between u23s and seniors isn't large, and promising players will be able to make the leap a lot sooner if they impress. Maintaining the quality of the u23s team is the only way we're going to have capable backup available on our budget. The days of having a 25 man senior squad are over.
