International break matches thread on 18:33 - Sep 7 by dmm | Watching the Ireland v England game I find myself again amazed that Grealish can be considered ahead of Eze. Is it because I am biased toward Eze? I know I am. Or is it that Grealish really is overrated? |
I am obviously biased towards Eze. However, every time I watch him, I come to the sad conclusion that what is holding him back and preventing serious interest from the 'big' clubs, is his lack of defensive play. He doesn't press well, his tracking back is too late and half paced and his marking and tackling still need a lot of work. I have seen occasional signs that he can defend; I thought he was better at it during the Euros, with Southgate trusting him at left back for a while and there was one tackle yesterday, nicking the ball on the edge of the opponents penalty area. However, on the whole any defensive improvement shown at the Euros has largely regressed again. It seems to me, that Eze is comfortable doing the beautiful stuff with the ball, that he is so good at, but suffers from a mixture of nerves and lack of self confidence when it comes to the grubby side of the game. This defensive side of play is necessary from every player at the top level today and maybe you get a bit more of that from the other skilfull attackers in the England squad and at all the 'top' clubs. He is 26 now. For Rrrs sake and his, I really want him to make that final breakthrough to the very highest level. I fear it may not happen. This 'flaw' in his all round performance is holding him back and maybe a reason why he was released by numerous clubs before he developed with us.
International break matches thread on 10:50 - Sep 8 with 3685 views | dmm | It's interesting to read your take on Eze, francisbowles. I've noticed he's not the best at the defensive side of the game but still feel he's not quite as bad as you say. I do see him as a player who plays his part in the team as well as doing what he does best. That said, I read that Steve Parish was shocked at the lack of interest in Eze this summer so perhaps your perspective on him is right.

International break matches thread on 17:34 - Sep 7 by Malintabuk | Early days but the decisions Southgate made is being shown as bad. Grealish is running this game, never went, Gordon is causing havoc down the left... got a minute ..... |
Very early days to make judgements, England usually won these games pretty easily under Southgate as well. Thought England were good in the first half, poor in the second and were up against basically a championship side The main pluses were Trent at right back I thought he did well, Gomes looked good when he came on and Gordon looked good first half

Second half performance was shambolic. I couldn't keep count of the times Trent gave the ball away, Gordon couldn't get around his man, Szmodics should've scored which could have completely changed the game and result. It was a typical England performance. Started well but failed to make the game safe. Boring to watch as the game wore on. Stil it's three points.🤔😁

Seems a bit of a weird match to make that claim when Grealish absolutely ran the game.

International break matches thread on 23:19 - Sep 7 by connell10 | I stick by what I said , football is about opinions and in my opinion Eze is the better player. |
It’s great to see differing opinions and also supporting an ex R, you’re not going to get many people in the sport backing your opinion though unfortunately as seen by Palace getting zero interest in Eze this summer whilst Olise got a wages bidding war .

It was a reasonably good chance but I never felt there was much chance of Ireland getting back into it and the last ten minutes or so was very comfortable once the subs had come on and we were closer to adding another than they were to scoring.

International break matches thread on 17:56 - Sep 7 by Paddyhoops | Wouldn’t get too carried away . Very poor Ireland team with a nonentity of a midfield. England can have as many as they want . One thing for sure though England will thrive under Carsley . A coach to suit the quality of players they have . Just thankful Eze and Bellingham aren’t playing . |
Ireland were pathetic, waving the England players through their midfield. I'd put someone like Keane in charge of the while shebang and get rid of the eejits in the FAI. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Always being available, body shape ready to move the ball on when receiving. He's only about 5ft 8, and usually plays further forward I think. Can't believe Manure let him go for nothing.

That's more than a tad OTT. If anyone ran the show it was Rice.

Couldn’t agree more . The midfield for my lot was non existent. Slightly better second second half but I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up that Grealish is the missing link in England getting over the line as tournament winners. It was men against boys yesterday. Let’s see how he performs when it’s men against men .

Another one who agrees. I posted this tp a whatsapp group after the match: "I agree about the lack of effort. We started well, but as soon as they knocked a few balls over Coleman and Doherty for Gordon we retreated. I saw very little communication on the pitch thereafter, very little organising, very little pressing in numbers. If the new manager was looking to see who his leaders will be he will surely be disappointed. In short, being shít is one thing. Being soft is unforgivable."

I was very impressed with England in general. Caveats: 1) Their out ball was always the same: over the top for Gordon on the ageing Coleman and the lazy Doherty. It worked a treat. I would imagine that the tactics would have been more varied if they had to be i.e. if Ireland were better. 2) They eased off second half. Why? England are more of an ould enemy to Ireland than vice versa but Ireland are still arival. England should have put them to the sword. 4-0. 5-0. Subs scoring. No mercy.

I mean it’s clearly not OTT - Whoscored has Rice then Grealish as their highest rated, BBC had Grealish as their clear man of the match…. Either way though it’s clearly a weird time to claim Eze is better than Grealish when Grealish had a great game.

Just stuck it on. I was in Bulgaria not long ago and ended up going to their qualifier with Lithuania- they were atrocious. Lavery who played against us for Cambridge just came on. That’s the level of the squad sadly. Bradley is a decent player and they put him in midfield to get him involved more than at full-back. The defence should be ok with Hume, Ballard, McNair and Lewis and Isaac Price is a kid who went from Everton to Standard Liege so presumably quite promising. Up front and central midfield they’re extremely weak.

Why doesn't Jimmy get in the squad? He's as good if not better than what I saw from the Irish defence.

My hopes for this man are currently in the "hopeful" stable. As with nearly all of our recent signings. All have shown moments of promise and adapting to our league.

His biggest problem at the moment is getting minutes with the form Frey is in! As we're buying what the computer says, remember how Moneyball started before it all eventually clicked.
