I think GA was screwed with whatever route he took after that daft red card. Sit back, soak up the pressure and hope we grind out a result obviously didn’t work. Change it up and go for the win I don’t think would’ve worked either….and may have ended up with a 1-5 or worse pumping. The red card killed the game for us and it was an insane challenge to make on the halfway line FFS! Our home support has to be commended for turning up every game at LR given the appalling run of results. Is this our worst run at home in the clubs history? I can’t remember one like it. Red card changed the whole game, no doubt. Jack Clarke was a handful anyway, and occasionally, we will pay for the fact that Smyth is a willing but not a natural defender. Thought Bellingham seemed to drift into dangerous areas without getting picked up. I know that some have commented about dropping too deep, but if we’d pushed up, we would have been picked off at will. All things considered, I thought we gave it a good go, but Sunderland are too good a team to play against for 80+ plus minutes with 10 men. | | | |

It wasn’t a surrender. That is complete nonsense and unhelpful.
The players gave their all today. They put in real shifts.
They played 68 mins, plus 18 mins of injury time with with 10 men against a play off team from last season, and a ref could have us absolutely nothing.
Surrender is ridiculously harsh. |
To me it look like he gave up on 60 minutes , chair , Smyth and cook all off with an eye on Tuesday is how it looked to me |  |

I know it's at least mostly done in fun, but it's utterly bizarre how we boo every player who ever had something to do with us or one of our horrible neighbours. Jack Clarke played a few games for us, when young, mostly as a sub. Didn't tear up any trees apart from one really effective sub appearance, went down to League One and got his sht together. What are we booing exactly? Do we really think it'll put him off his game? There are players I can understand us going for - Kalvin Phillips for his desperation to kill Geoff Cameron; captain, leader, bellend; Bosingwa; etc etc. But Jack Clarke? For having a below par loan spell? People need to grow up a bit, or spend more time at the panto, i dunno. All it does is make players desperater to ram it down our throats. |

Sinclair needs to be more intelligent the way he uses his strength, otherwise he will never make the grade unfortunately. And I don't know why Gareth is laughing about another surrender at home. He needs something on Tuesday... that's for sure. |

Now that "TwiiterFingers" Fernandes is out of the picture, and given the way that Amit Bhatia was talking around the opening of the training ground, my personal opinion is that they're more interested in the long-term stability and health of the football club than short-term panic measures.
Performances have improved enormously, young players are coming through and making a positive impact, we had more players away on international duty than in a long while, and everyone's starting to enjoy being at the club again, which clearly hasn't been the case in years.
It seems to me its just a very small portion of the fanbase who seem to enjoy indulging in amateur dramatics who are thinking about "pressure". | | | |

Well, it is a big improvement on last seasons woeful efforts, despite decimating the squad and replacing them with freebies.
No one expects us to be particularly competitive this season, but we have two wins on the board and have a team that will work hard for one another. Expectations for this season at least, need to be realistic.
A win on Tuesday and everyone calms down a bit…….until the next defeat when the usual suspects lose their shit again. | | | |

There's an intelligent balance to be struck between (a) two banks of 10 men dropping deeper than the Titanic for 60 minutes, inviting them on, 'going long' (aka giving the ball back to them at every opportunity) and shipping 3 goals anyway (which could and probably should have been 6), and (b) setting up so we at least have an outball and plausible support for Armstrong, i.e. a counter-attacking threat. Clearly, however, that was beyond the wit of GA and Dobson, who preferred the masochistic/inferiority-laden/borderline unwatchable option.

The thing I can't decide, genuinely, is what was our plan to get the ball to Armstrong.
We played 5-3-1, an dthe 5 and 3 were very deep, we seemed to have no link-man, no transition plan, leaving Armstrong isolated, and even if he got the ball he had no-one to pass it to.
For those at the game - would it have worked going to 4 at the back straight after the red, allowing us to play another attacker/attacking midfielder? |
To answer the first part of your question Brian, the tactic we seem to employ is to put the ball over the top into the channel (predominantly right side) for Armstrong to use his pace and strength. He's not a back to goal hold up type distributing to players coming on from midfield.
But the approach does work. Our goal came from him winning a throw in from a ball he harassed the CB to put out.
Personally I don't think either of the CBs had the measure of him on Sat. The ref got them out of jail by penalising him constantly and the card nullified his game.
He needs to get smarter in that aspect and he will in time. | |

Booing Jack Clarke wasn't very clever. He did seem a bit rattled at first but he was always going to try a bit harder to score and did. Reminded me a bit of a QPR v Burnley game in 2008 when the fans took the piss out of Andy Cole had he responded by scoring a hattrick. |

Some young fella kept the ball and would not throw it back until Cole walked over to the wall to collect it. At which point the lad stood up and throw the ball over Cole’s head. Cole clapped him sarcastically which resulted in him getting dogs abuse naturally.
He picked up the ball. Lined up the free kick and smashed it straight into the roof the net.

It does feel a delicate situation at the moment with Ainsworth, things have improved but we've lost the first 3 home games, lost 5 of the first 7 league & cup games so another defeat tomorrow and people are going to be unhappy. I don't think he's in any danger at the moment though |  | | |
