Low % beer 09:31 - May 11 with 9573 viewsmikeygunn

Following on from the other beer thread…. I was diagnosed with epilepsy last summer and can’t really drink a lot nowadays, I’m familiar with all the 0.0 & 0.5% beers but would like to find a nice 1-2% beer for euros. I’ve found small beer and one at a ramsgate brewery but struggling to find any others. Any suggestions? I like all types, lager, craft, ale etc!

Honestly it's a lovely light brew.

Perfect for summer.

Camden Town Brewery do what they call Week Nite Lager which is 3%.
It's like being a kid again and having a Shandy Bass.

I forgot this one. I bought a 12 box off them and this was in it. 2.8%

Not quite as nice as wiper but that's just my opinion.

Lucky Saint
Big Drop
Nirvana Brewing

All do good NA and Low% beers. Lucky Saint mostly just lager but the other two have a wide range of IPAs, stouts and other darker beers

Definitely recommend the range from Big Drop. The stout is quite outstanding and would beat many 'normal' stouts in my view.

Hello Mikey. Stumbled across Siren Half Mast in a pub (back in the old days when we did things like that) and was mightily impressed with the flavour in a 2.8%.

Any tips for 0.0 to 0.5% beers?

I'm going to try out the Wiper and True recommended by Metallica - it looks right up my street - but I'm trying to cut back on the booze and if anyone can recommend a good no/very low alcohol beer I'll be very grateful. In order of the "taste" of the ones I've tried so far, I already know Moretti, Peroni, Becks and Cobra and they range from okish to appalling.

Suffering since 1978.

Brewdog’s Nanny State and Punk AF are my favourite non alcoholic beers, both decent.

My favourite AF craft beer is Beavertown's Lazer Crush, which they stock in Sainsbury's, but my favourite AF beers of all are the wheat beers from Schneider Weisse and Maisel's Weisse, which are both really good. Those three are the only ones that seen to have enough body(?) for me. All the others that I've tried just seem a bit watery.

I'll give that Siren one a whirl at some point because I love their beers - thanks for pointing that out.

If you're trying to cut back on the booze, I would really recommend the Drinkless app - it is amazing how much difference this has made to my drinking. For decades, I have probably drunk 4-5+ days a week, without every really thinking about it, but it's amazing the difference having to document my alcohol consumption has made.

I have two weekly goals: to have 4 dry days, and to drink less than 25 units per week. Well, the latter has been very, very difficult, and I'm usually around the 30-35 mark, but over the past six months, I have only had two weeks where I drank on more than three days, so that has been a massive improvement.

I'm savouring my drinking days much more now, and have even had days of visiting friends and just sticking on the A/F beers or water; something I have never been able to do before, even when I've set out with good intentions. I don't drive, so I've never had to be the designated driver. It's surprised me how determined I've been to hit that target, and I'm now totally out of the habit of having 2-3 beers sat indoors on a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday night. It's worked really well for my wife too - although we still could do with drinking less on our drinking days... good luck!

Thanks for the tips and advice Konk.

My wife and I have just about cracked booze free Mondays to (most) Thursdays. However, it is the weekend boozing that is excessive - no two ways about it. I have just had enough of that and having had a dry Friday and Saturday last weekend my wife drank a lot less too. Our recycling box is usually an embarrassment but this week my wife thinks the bin men will be worried about us.

Your point about savouring a drink is a good one too - we had a couple of drinks on Sunday and I enjoyed them much more than usual.

Cheers!

Well done, mate. Excellent work. It's so much easier if you're both working on it together. I have been trying to not have 400l of booze in the house, that way I start off with a couple of AF beers, and then have my 'proper' beers. If I'm still wanting a beer after that, then it's only AF left in the fridge, so I might finish up with one or two of those. Not sure that strategy is going to work once the pubs are open, as we enjoy a pint in the afternoon, but we'll see how we go!

He's commissioned a new yacht for God knows how much and it will have its own supply ship sailing with it.
We've all helped him on his way.
I remember I used to say that about Richard Branson as I was a keen customer at his shop in Notting Hill Gate. Some wonderful stuff on the Virgin label in those days.

Definitely recommend the range from Big Drop. The stout is quite outstanding and would beat many 'normal' stouts in my view.

Seconded - the Big Drop milk stout is great. Their Citra IPA is good too. Wouldn't bother with their 'Pine Trail Ale' tbh - too thin and who wants to drink pine anyway? Bit odd.

Infinite Session IPA is a good one too - great price and very fast shipping too.

Would also massively recommend the Maisels Weise - I see it's 12 quid for 6 on Amazon - I was able to buy 24 last time for a cheaper price but don't see that option.

I've found the 0.5% stuff to be a pretty good stand-in when trying to cut down. Sort of allows you to have much the same behaviour in terms of impulsivity but gives you a bit of time to reflect on whether you really want to get pissed (sometimes the answer to that is yes anyway, granted....)

But I know the request is for 3%-ish stuff and see 2 or 3 good options posted above which I'll probably try myself.

Writing everything down has been crucial to me losing weight too, including cutting down drinking. I have the NutraCheck Calorie Counter on my phone, and I generally stay within limits six days a week, and have cut my units to 15-20 (four or five dry days a week). It's a chore writing it down, though you can use the phone camera to read bar codes, but it shows how easy it is to lie and how important it is to be honest if you want to get anywhere. Drinks are the lesser evil of the old-fashioned Friday night big out, compared to crisps, pizza or curry.

Ice cold Heineken 0 is just about bearable if I'm desperate, but I can't drink two, which is a bonus in a way. I would rather drink fizzy water to be honest.

I second the Infinite Sessions IPA. Really good.

For a larger, the San Miquel is the best I've found to match up with the alcohol equivalent.
