Very green batting line up though and Prior is no longer his old swashbuckling self.

Summer Cricket Thread on 11:50 - Jun 12 with 5207 views | Tonto | outside Bell our middle order has played 16 tests. Root has played 15 of those. green? understatment! even so I think the selectors have done the right thing (other than the whole KP debacle) in picking younger players

I would agree. I would also say that Cook is playing for his place now. Maybe make someone else captain and let him focus on his batting.

Summer Cricket Thread on 12:37 - Jun 12 with 5154 views | Tonto | nuts - 3 down the problem is if Cook isnt Captain, who is? there is no one obvious in the team, and that means bringin someone else in just to Captain (we've just had this debate in the office)

Summer Cricket Thread on 12:51 - Jun 12 with 5146 views | willis1980 | youd want someone with personality, strength and experience to be captain. i think cook was a poor choice as captain and said so when the appointment was first made, only because someone scores 100s doesnt make them a leader. he leads with the bat but isnt really doing that because hes out of nick. take cook out of the side that leaves: Bell - a no from me, great player but slightly meek Anderson - no Prior - not sure Broad - hmmmm, not sure gus fraser will have pushed for that robson selection and i think its a poor call. whats happened to james taylor, adam lyth, simon davies etc. i dont think taylor did much wrong and ends up being dropped. i thought the lions were supposed to encourage development, dont take a player out of the lions put him in the test side and then drop them. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Summer Cricket Thread on 13:02 - Jun 12 with 5125 views | DWQPR | I have this horrible feeling that we are in for another decade of abject mediocrity. Never felt that Cook was a good captain and that is being proved. Would have had KP as captain myself and built the team around him and his ethics towards the game, which I feel has been more than blown out of any proportion to suit certain individuals needs. For me England should have gone for Alex Hales from Notts as opener, and allow him the time and licence that the Aussies allowed for David Warner.

I've had the same discussion with plenty of people who like to mouth off about how carp Cook is. If you look at the county scene you'll find very few England-qualified captains and none really of test quality. But I think its getting to the point where something has to be done. Cook's form with the bat has gone to pieces and he needs to work on that without having to work on his captaincy at the same time. I think his reaction to the Buttler mankadding shows he's losing his cool too. I think I'd go for Bell - he wouldn't be inspiring but Warks fans reckon he did OK there, he's one of the few players guaranteed a place, and he'd start without the baggage of having skippered us to a whitewash defeat or of having been involved with the KP decision. But I fear the guys at the top don't have a grip on either the scale of the problem or what needs to be done. The fact that they have put Ballance in at the wrong position, they've put Prior back in as soon as he's passed as match fit even though he was actually dropped for poor form [while Buttler has been one of the few successes of the last few months], the decision to axe KP - which is justifiable, but was made before they'd even chosen a new coach, when clearly it should have been a matter for the new coach - the unwillingness to address the issue of the team being packed full of non-English players, all lead me to think that Moores was the wrong choice as coach and the men who chose him are the wrong men to do the choosing.
Summer Cricket Thread on 15:02 - Jun 12 with 5017 views | qpr1976 | Making 6 changes to a Test side is a lot like making love to a....sorry wrong simile .....a little like QPR starting a new season, only with less changes ! What did Compton do wrong ? Other than make centuries ? I'd love to see the stats of ALL England Test Captains batting averages BEFORE & AFTER they became Captain. I bet most averages dropped once they took on the Captains role. Anyone know where I could find such stats ?
Summer Cricket Thread on 15:28 - Jun 12 with 4993 views | toboboly | Compton being dropped for Root was stupid, Root should have been allowed to continue in the middle order. Ali and Root doing well here, eating into the time and makiing Sri Lanka work for their wickets, scoring a few here ant there too. Good Test cricket.

i wanted compton to succeed as he seemed to score runs for fun in the county game, but he did fall out of form sadly and got found out. i originally thought he was dropped as a form of protection with a view to reintroduce him again a bit like prior recently, however, just like with some other prospects it seems theyve closed the door on him.

I thought this too but didn't middx chase down a ridiculous target of 450 at lords a month or so ago? Might have been in cooks/moores mind
Summer Cricket Thread on 20:02 - Jun 16 with 4797 views | ElHoop | It's difficult as the bigger the lead the more pressure you can apply and the less you worry about giving away runs and hopefully the more wickets you take and then when you do everyone says that you should have declared earlier. But we should have given them 20 minutes last night.
Summer Cricket Thread on 21:23 - Jun 16 with 1871 views | MrSheen | Shame, good finish, England normally find a way to win those. As well as the conservative declaration, Cook deserves some stick for the hopeless timewasting tactics yesterday morning, putting everyone out for Matthews to offer him a single he didn't want rather than trying to get him out, then trying to bounce out the tail-enders rather than bowling at the stumps.
