Happy Magna Carta day
at 08:40 15 Jun 2015

I see thousands are gathering at Runnymede for the 800th anniversary of signing the Magna Carta.

How ironic that David Cameron is there for an "elaborate commemoration of the historic text, within which the foundations of parliamentary democracy, human rights and the supremacy of the law over the crown were first enshrined."

This is a document which gives us the people absolutely no rights at all. It is not enforceable in a court. It's a nice story, and an important part of our history, but the document itself is valueless today.

And yet, in parallel, he is trying to remove the Human Rights Act. Legislation which is enforceable by us all to protect the foundations of our human rights.

You couldn't make it up.

The Board's record on big decisions
at 16:51 12 Jan 2015

A bunch of us were chatting before the game on saturday about the big decisions that the Board have had to make and take over the years since 2002.

Whilst we may all mumble and grumble about things that have happened that haven't gone well, commercial issues, ticketing issues, pricing for Europa League etc, we were trying to agree the *big*, critical decisions that the Board had got demonstrably wrong.

This is not started with the intent of it being a negative thread - the opposite, in fact. We found it very difficult to come up with things that were done that were evidently wrong. In fact, the only one we came up with was appointing Cusack as manager.

You could potentially list delays to stadium expansion, but it really isn't clear how much is the Board getting it wrong, versus the complexity of the ground ownership structure, versus the council planning rules.

You could argue not selling Michu at his peak value? But who would have predicted with any kind of certainty the injury issues that followed.

It was much easier to list the decisions that some - and sometimes many - fans thought were wrong at the time, but turned out to be right. Their inspired choice of Managers despite obvious inexperience (Martinez, Rodgers, Monk), selling Trundle, investing in Landore & Fairwood rather than spending it all on players.

One big decision wrong in twelve years? If so, impressive.

Climate not-changed day
at 23:11 1 Oct 2014

Today is the 18th anniversary of the day the world defeated a common enemy. Global Warming.

Yes, it is 18 years to the day since the earth stopped warming. The temperature has plateaued ever since. Unbelievable that it was so long ago.

It is a tribute to all mankind that the world could put aside it's differences and achieve this. Admittedly, 18 years ago, they didn't know they had to. But well done all the same.

3-0 down to Bournemouth already. Even Radio Wales have described them as embarrassing.

Baggies team news
at 23:37 27 Aug 2014

Alan Irvine appears to rule out including their 2 new signings in the squad for Saturday, as they're not match ready. Lescott also out.

Have to say these looked decent signings on paper, so quite pleased to see they might be out of the running for our game.

Alan Irvine has ruled out recent signings Silvestre Varela and Georgios Samaras from West Bromwich Albion’s trip to Swansea, claiming both players are still some way from match fitness.

The Baggies boss did not include the duo in Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup game against Oxford.

And the Scot revealed that neither player would make it for the game in south Wales.

He expects the Portugal winger Varela, who last week signed on loan from Porto, and ex-Celtic forward Samaras to not be fully ready until after the international break.

Irvine claimes they, along with Joleon Lescott, will need to undergo mini ‘pre-seasons’.

Lescott has been out of action since damaging his knee in a friendly against Nottingham Forest - that, in itself, was a delayed return to first-team football following a calf problem.

He has resumed initial training but isn’t ready for first-team action.

Irvine expects the players to be not be available until next month’s game against Everton, at the very earliest.

He said: “He (Varela) won’t play any part on Saturday; he’s not fit.

“He’s going to need the international break to have a mini pre-season.

“Neither Samaras or Lescott will be fit for the weekend.

“The fact is none of them have had a pre-season.

“You saw on Tuesday how difficult it is for players who have not had a pre-season.

“It’s extremely demanding and I’ve got to be mindful of that when I’m assessing individual performances.

“We’ve got too many players who haven’t been able to do the work that we would want them to do.

“That’s no fault of theirs, it’s just the circumstances.”

Irvine named seven players who were starting games for the first time this season.

Of those seven, five completed the full 120 minutes, with Chris Baird being replaced by Cristian Gamboa during half-time of extra-time.

Speaking about the fall-out from Tuesday’s game - a result and, more so, performance which drew criticism from some quarters - Irvine continued: “That won’t be the team that plays on Saturday.

“It’s a funny one because a lot of our players who needed football will have got an extra benefit from playing for 120 minutes — and it wasn’t in the plan.

“It’s a strange positive out of a negative.

“I think they’ll be better for it once they recover.

“There will be some tired people in training and we’ll try and look after everybody and get ready for the game against Swansea, because we’re going to have to work hard there.”
