Southampton Football Club didn’t vote against it.
There can be no moaning about it then.
‘Premier League clubs have voted by 19-1 in favour of keeping video assistant referees (VAR) next season.
Wolves triggered a vote on the use of VAR in the 2024-25 season after formally submitting a resolution to the Premier League in May.
In order for VAR to be scrapped, 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs needed to vote in favour of doing so.
But only Wolves voted in favour of the proposal as they failed to gain any support from other top flight clubs.’

The system isnt the issue, it is the way that it is implemented, in other countries they use it to eradicate obvious errors, here we spend 5 minutes trying to find an error and draw lines etc

Like the Beto goal for Everton against us. I don’t remember the amount of time on that being moaned at when it went our way.

Usually the 'it's not the system' brigade blame the officials. This is a new one - not the system, just the way it is 'implemented'. How a system is implemented IS the system. And the whole system is not fit for purpose. Drawing lines on a screen has been stupid from day 1. Allowing VAR to re-referee a game has been stupid from day 1. Allowing VAR to use any amount of slow-mo, different angles, and microscopes to work out what is 'clear and obvious' has been stupid from day 1. Allowing the VAR officials as much time as they like to decide on what's 'clear and obvious' has been stupid from day 1. VAR is useless, but not as useless as those who should have pulled the plug years ago. And anyone trying to defend it in any way is not seeing the wood for the trees.

This. Instead of human error from the ref and linesman we now have human error from people watching tv screens miles away. It isn’t working and there was a chance last summer to get rid which apart from Wolves nobody voted for. They still moan when a VAR decision goes against them though.

It's the fact that a 'review' system which is intended to reduce errors actually makes its own errors (often worse ones) that really gets me. How can they not see how f*cking ridiculous that is. That and the fact that 'level' is no longer onside. And, of course, that it takes the edge off every single goal celebration.

That moment directly after Archer scored at Brighton was exactly what football is all about for match-going fans. The sheer elation and out-pouring of raw emotion after turning the game around gave everyone in our end a joyous feeling that is impossible to replicate. Then it's taken away from you....after nearly 5 minutes of deliberating by some peckers in a studio 150 miles away. Whether any decision VAR makes is technically right or not, to deny fans that moment is scandalous so nothing will ever convince me it's for the good of the game.

"How a system is implemented IS the system." Not when it comes to technology it isn't, the system works it gives you the data, it is how you interpretate the data and in this case it is down to human error. If VAR was used in a way that accepted that you are not going to get 100 % of the decisions right, but you will correct a large proportion of the wrong ones, then it is worth doing. What needs changing is the way it is implemented, if you have to draw a line on the screen then it is not clear and obvious, most decisions can be cleared up in 20-30 seconds whilst the scorer is running off into the corner either kissing the badge or cupping his ear depending what set of fans he is in front of. Do that and we get rid of the ones that the human eye has missed. In any debate there are always two sides to any story and simply saying " anyone trying to defend it in any way is not seeing the wood for the trees." idoesn't solve anything it just returns us to the original problem and that is that in the modern game where most players are diving all over the place and the game is played at such a fast pace that decisions are got wrong and VAR is needed. I am not blaming the officials, but the truth is that it is human error that is failing the game not VAR itself, it still gets more wrong decisions turned into right ones, than controversial ones such as Friday night. Of course it is frustrating that is why it needs revamping, in other countries they don't seem to have the problems that we do

Southampton At Brighton The Verdict on 18:21 - Dec 2 with 526 views | 1ASIN12 | VAR is now refereeing the game on goals / penalties / red cards rather than only being used if there a clear and obvious error, which we were told it would only be used for . No one ever moaned if a striker was 1mm offside . The fact that it’s talked about just as much as referees were to me, proves it’s a failure. Thought after a slow half and 10 mins of the 2nd we came into the game and our passing had a lot more purpose. Rather than just pass it about for a while we actually attacked and moved the ball quickly . It’s a bonus point and we now may overtake Derbys 11 points.

I am not quite sure what you are saying. When you say 'if you have to draw a line on a screen', are you saying that the system shouldn't be drawing lines on screens, because if you are I agree with you, but this system does and that's why I say that the system is useless/not fit for purpose. I am not arguing that some kind of video review is necessarily bad. I'm saying that this VAR system is bad. And if you defend VAR, you defend this system, not some imaginary good one that they didn't introduce. So what needs to change is not simply 'the way it is implemented'. They need to ditch this failed system and (maybe) start again. And if they did start again, how about this for a set of principles to adhere to... 1. Level is onside. And 'level' is not an exact science but every linesman in the world who works without VAR has to judge it, and can. Any system needs to respect that 'level is onside' rule. This one doesn't. 2. The system should be there to rule our errors that the onfield officials could reasonably/possibly have avoided. E.g. Out of sight handball goals, or punches to the kidney behind their backs. It should not be allowed to view things in a way, and at a level of accuracy that no onfield could possibly see. So no slow-mos, no zoom ins and no f*cking lines! 3. Given that it is only meant to be spotting howlers, these should not be difficult to see, and if they are difficult to spot then they're not howlers. Give them 1 minute to be sure that it's a howler and if they are not sure within 1 minute then that's it, no review. It won't be perfect, but it will hopefully intervene about 10% of the time that it does now and it will do only what it is meant to do. And maybe we can go back to celebrating most goals in real time. But before any of this can happen, they need to ditch the pig's ear that they are trying and failing to make a silk purse out of, because this system is not fixable.
